It wasn't the direct result but most anyone who was into star wars, comics, dungeons and dragons various other geek miscellanea were for all intents outcasts. Nerd and geek were insults. I've seen plenty a classmate have their dragonlance books kicked down the hallway. It was only in more recent memory when any of this became socially acceptable.

How genuinely depressing is it that all the years of well told and iconic marvel history is all washed away and even if we do achieve the same level of status quo it will not be through a beloved moment in time and through years of sincere character development and relationship building. It will be in a desperate stunt issue, crapped out because someone finally realized what a waste of everyone's lives the last two decades were

Not like this it hasn't. It's the ending of Ratatouie. Not everyone can be a hero but a hero can come from anywhere. Spidey was a kid from Queens who learned a hard lesson and became a better person from it. The lesson that anyone can wear the mask now is just them wanting it because they want it.
