what you're describing is fulfilling social obligations/rituals.
on one hand, most people do that to "fluff their own ego" or fit in.
on the other hand, a small minority of people are extremely manipulative, and do the same things while consciously doing it to cheat/steal.
those are completely different, first of all.

okay, but i think there's a big difference between fulfilling a social obligation in order to subconsciously fluff your own ego VS fulfilling a social obligation with the conscious intent to betray it later for personal gain.
in either case, the social ritual gets fulfilled, which is overall a good thing.
nothing wrong with people's egos being fluffed.
