It's turn-based tactical strategy rpg. You have a castle that you develop each turn where you produce units for army. You have heroes that lead these armies and move around the map getting into fights, they level up which makes units under their command better. It's extremely addicting.

Yes but it's much better to install HoMM3 HD+ overhaul from https://sites.google.com/site/heroes3hd which gives you modern resolutions and mod support. Also if you want to play multiplayer everybody also uses it to do so.

3 is the classic and not exactly balanced but definitely the most rounded and complete game. It has so many learning resources + active mp & comminity + active modding scene, so still has a lot going for it.

please be honest, how good or bad is this game? I loved Baldur's Gate 2, it's characters, it's writting and specially the pace of the adventure, going from exploring the area near Amn on your own but then taking you on a more linear, more epic adventure across many different locales. Is BG3 anything like that?

I've been on a TN binge ever since nioh hooked me for some 500 hours. N1, n2, sop, ng1-3 have all been just non stop fun. Playing ronin now and will do wo long later, surprised how much I'm loving ronin despite hating open world games
