What are some important aspects to capturing the adventure feel in your opinion?
I want to replicate it in my game, but I am finding it a hard thing to break down.
As I have observed, the basic components of an RPG are travelling to a location, levelling, looting, getting stronger and returning to town to stock up and the art is to to mask these somehow to feel more like a real adventure than justa simple game of numbers, but I don't know how.

for me, a world needs to feel (mechanically) alive. There needs to be things happening regardless of the players actions, and they should be based on the NPCs/creatures AI and not just scripted events that trigger because the player enters an area.
Anonymous No.718663594 >>718664058

You just mean NPCs actually having a life and shopkeepers not staying at their shop 24/7 or do you mean actually dynamic events like having territories taken by warring factions, economies adapting, characters dieing and NPC adventurers plundering dungeons and levelling up, all without the players influence? Last would be impossible for a solo dev or a small studio.

that would depend on the actual game, but in general the more the better. On your last comment, for Oblivion (2006) a modder added adventure NPCs who would actually head out and dungeon raid for real just like the player can, regardless of what you were actually doing. They would even loot chests and enemies. Some would be aggressive towards you, while some would be friendly and din't mind you yourself taking loot.

My probblem is that this would deplete from gameplay if the NPCs would loot the locations before the player could.

If you think about it, a fantasy world with Adventuring Guilds wouldn't be sustainable, unless adventurers are a very rare, dangerous and highly prestigious job that only 5-10 people per country perform, because otherwise all the ruins, caverns, loot and ancient treasure would be picked clean in a few decades and then nothing would be left. This is where you would need a bit of unrealistic game design magic like respawning the dungeons, which I personally would justify by there being many millions of treasure filled dungeons, remenants of an ancient civilisation that spanned the entire world but they disappear and reappear because of frequent continential shifts and volcanic activity. However, this would still be pretty unrealistic and bullshit.

It's actually hard to say. The game where I felt that feeling of adventure the most was Lineage 2. It was an absolute grindfest, but you had total freedom over where you wanted to go and what you wanted to do.
No (or almost no) invisible walls, no limit on PKing/PvP, you had to trade player-to-player to actually get the high-level stuff.

For solo games, I think linear games work better. I had that feel in the "old" JRPGs, like FF9 or Tales of Symphonia. I think an overworld gives a better feeling of adventure than an openworld. Though, I guess the best adventure game was Windwaker.

I don't know, man. What you're describing sounds cool. I wouldn't mind finding loot stolen in a dungeon if there was a way to figure out who was there. Like clues pertaining to a specific adventurer or maybe a secret stash. You could have rivals or informants within the guild.

[All this is assuming you have hardmods installed]
going on an adventure to nowhere the getting side-tracked through a cave system that takes you to a completely new area
You can't really get lost, but you can very much get stranded which makes "going out" an ordeal you have to prepare for.
Camping Kits are heavy as fuck, so either you or a pawn have to carry it. Y
BUT you can lose access to your camping kits if the pawns die so it's a balance that's fun to strike.
Carry Limits can be really tight so you have to be managing your gear and weight before and during every outing.
I love selecting the hired Pawns (feels like hiring adventures), making sure their kits fit my needs, and rekitting my pawn to make sure she gets hired too.
The combat is fun and very scary when you're fighting beefed up enemies and shit like Goreharpies. It turns into more "swashbuckling" with you knocking enemies down, throwing crates, or throwing them into each other.

There literally isn't any other game that does it like this.

The second KCD2 DLC is about smithing and rebuilding an old forge. The 3rd is related to a church mystery.

DD2 is fine if you get it for $40 or less. It objectively had nowhere near enough content to justify the $70 launch price. Terrible enemy variety, no replayable end-game loop, very few rewards for exploration as you just buy most of the best gear in shops, static enemy spawns spammed everywhere etc. It's like they made a really good combat system, and then put absolutely no effort into the rest of the game in which the combat system is used.

You being a rambling idiot who's ascribing incorrect meaning to words and concepts and trying to put things under umbrellas they don't belong under doesn't mean you've dug deeper. Your one man thought (I use that word loosely) experiment is worthless, and like every ESLmonkey, you're completely ignorant about the topic you're trying to argue. I'm using a modpack ("collection") from the steam workshop called "Vanilla Remastered (for my WIFE)", but I think the main graphics mods are Mood Shadows, Mood Weather, Mood Lighting, Mood Waves and Foliage and Stone Total Rework.
I also have "colorful" turned on in the graphics settings. All the other effects are turned off, I feel like they make the game look a bit worse, some of them were on by default.

But the game isn't that great looking in most areas, the Great Desert has a nice view of the sky and the sand has a nice color, perhaps that's why you remember it being uglier.

Interesting but:
Can adventures be had through underground hallways?
Can adventure happen in a familiar, mundane setting?
I'd say yes and yes. Crime thrillers are somewhat adventurous using plot and dungeon crawls are a staple of the genre. Monster, door, treasure, bare minimum. With the door being the mysterious element. Is the treasure necessary for adventure?

The reason no one makes games like "classic" 3D Zelda is that they suck amd are offensively boring.

>Can adventures be had through underground hallways?
Hollow Knight sure felt like an adventure to me. Exploration, getting lost, discovery and being able to reach beyond what you expected to be there since that bug nest is fucking deep. Kind of similar feel to taking that elevator in Elden Ring that takes you to the underground area.
>Can adventure happen in a familiar, mundane setting?
Kingdom Come 2 felt like an adventure as well, but not as much because of exploration and discovery of places, but exploration and discovery of people and their history. The game having some of the best side-quests in RPGs sure helped a lot.

Just danger and mystery doesn't really feel like a complete adventure. You also need the occasional slow and moody to pace it.

Scripted events can't all happen identically if the player traverses an area more than once for any reason. Either there needs to be some randomization in events, so that they'll see different things happen every time they pass through a region (within limits of course), or once a scripted event 'finishes' it is done and won't happen again or not for a long time IRL.
Elden Ring has these caravans that tow around useful loot and they're surrounded by guards that you have to take down. Usually starting somewhere distant and heading towards a major area. Sounds great.
The issue is that they respawn every time you reload an area, even after you cleared it once, and they take the same path every time.
What went from something that made the world feel alive, becomes something that makes it feel more dead, because repetition kills the believability.

For an adventure game where players will reuse the same space, that is something that you have to account for.
If your game is very linear, and backtracking or milling about a specific location is not common, this is not a worry.

I think so too! My theory of adventure is missing a piece.
The downtimes work in tandem with the dangers to enhance one another in contrast. All the most adventurous games use this combination.
Going home after an adventure, leaving home on an adventure.
I don't want to rest my weight upon that hero's journey and i think a simpler recipe can be devised. Something useful for videogames and their limitations.
It would also help Anons in these threads to understand what adventure even is.

Worth playing but very difficult.
Kinda like Dark SOuls but instead of no death penalty, you get a brutal death penalty.

For the first quest after the tutorial, I would just suggest using a guide because that quest in specific is utter fucking bullshit.

Glad to hear it. I just recently came back to it after a 4 year break myself. The vanilla+ style mods really do improve it significantly. Been playing Fountains and it's a pretty sweet nod to A Link to the Past. You unlock a few gadgets that help you reach certain places across the map. It's pretty difficult but the world design, gameplay, and atmosphere make up for it.

It's definitely best played in co-op, but its a fine singleplayer game. I bought the game for myself and my friend when it was on sale so we didn't need to share a screen. It is absolutely bullshit and it is unironically unfair, but it is pretty fun and has some decent adventuring. I recommend watching sseth's review of it if you haven't already.

Rogueligkfuck, they play on the safety/danger combo like no other types of games. Despite the randomness of the genre desperately trying to keep the mystery intact for as long as possible.
The mystery of the levels and mechanics fade yet the games keep on being played from the sheer chemical reaction of departing from home (where the character is created or equipped) and into the fray for as long as possible then back home to safety for a new set of preparations.

Serenity should be able to react with mystery at a similar potency but i can't picture examples of it happening. How can it be more than an enhancing atom within the danger molecule?
