The thing is though, this is all set-up that gets a payoff from her being forced to deal with more complex emotions like love and pity towards Denji. Not to mention that it's part of the obvious ongoing theme of Devils craving what is the opposite of them, and seemingly unobtainable due to their nature.
If you take away her romance, where else does she pour out all those emotions? Who would she get attached to, enough to feel guilt? I mean, this is not Angel, or Nayuta, or Fami, or Power. This is supposed to be an evil kind of Devil. She's not out there looking to align herself or make friends with humans. In Denji, she sees a kindred Devil that she can guide to act more like herself.
Without Denji, you'd have to build an entirely different story for her from the ground up.
