It's obviously being done for virtue signaling reasons and not because the designers though it would be cool or have some story significance. It's especially blatant in WoW's case because ever since Actiblizz's Cosby suite/breast milk thief scandal happened they've gone with a fine toothed comb over the game replacing everything that might plausibly offend even one of the 8 billion people on the planet and then making every character going forward (and even rewriting some past ones) to be gay or a cripple or a tranny, it's so blatant and in-your-face it's just grating.
