I think it's possible he was a thief. I also think it's possible that he was just curious. I mean, I personally live near a construction site and I walk by there from time to time just to see how far they've got, what sort of features they're adding, etc, etc. I don't actually set foot on the property, because I don't want people thinking I'm there to steal shit, but I wouldn't categorically say that anyone who does do so must be a thief.
But either way it doesn't matter. Thief or not, those guys had no business playing vigilante.
Although that said, I thought it was harsh to convict all of them of felony murder. It was very clear from the video that Travis did not want to shoot Arbery and only did so when Arbery tried to take his gun. And the other guy that was with them got a life sentence just for filming. But on the other hand they're just the sort of people who'd defend the felony murder rule when it isn't applied to them, so why should I waste energy feeling sympathy for them.
It's all so tiresome. No one ever gets justice. For every case like Trayvon Martin where a clearly guilty person gets away with it, there's a case like George Floyd where the perpetrator gets overcharged (as I said above, I think what Chauvin did is clearly manslaughter, not murder). No one cares about the truth anymore, it's all about scoring political points.
