It's a mix of it. Live covers I somewhat understand if they don't want to recreate the intense warbling that happens near the end, but plenty of ones clearly made with music software don't even attempt it. The closest I've seen is in some famicom covers (which didn't sound good) or they weren't even covers of Black Knife itself. I'll happily take anything at this point, I usually satiate my enjoyment of a song through listening to covers, but this is the first time I've been so thoroughly disappointed at every turn.
