It's a game with unique music that really stands out, great characters that have dimension despite their quirks, and it incorporates game mechanics within storytelling that few games have managed to pull off.
There's no downside to playing the free demo. If you complete the demo and then buy the game your save is carried over seamlessly.

It's a more primitive game (so you'll enjoy it more now vs. after Deltarune) but it has a good self-contained world. Many of the same characters are present across both games, but with alternate lives, and Deltarune's treatment of them is more nuanced and subtle than what you get in Undertale. Deltarune also references Undertale everywhere which you won't get if you haven't played it.
Here's a caveat of course, it comes down to taste. Some people fall in love with Undertale upon playing it and others don't, so don't worry if you don't "get it."

Undertale is a bit more primitive on the mechanical side, but honestly the writing is better, the way the story is structured and delivered is better, the pacing is better, the music is more iconic, the themes are more coherent and compelling, plus it's much shorter, so you'll get through it much quicker. But it's not to say that the gameplay is bad. It's still one of the most fun JRPG-style battle systems, even though I think that's the one area that Deltarune clearly improves upon. But Undertale has a much higher difficulty ceiling, because of a couple of fights on a specific route.

Toby knows how to play with player expectations and does interesting things with secrets and stuff that will appeal to you if you've played a million games. Overall, Undertale is ok. If you played actual bullet hells, you'd know this is baby shit. This is like Nolanfags thinking his movies are deep because they only watched a total of 20 films in their normalfag lifetimes. When you don't play many videogames, you'd think Undertale is innovative and special but it's really not. It's not challenging enough to be stimulating in a way that's groundbreaking. The story just feels like a copypaste of anime/older rpgs, Toby Fox himself said it's just that other game but with furries. So the writing isn't great either. Undertale without nostalgia goggles or furry bias is just 5/10. Haters who seethe at it are wrong but trannies who overpraise it are also wrong. Earthbound has shit writing. All characters are one dimensional. The only saving grace is that it does that thing where the general quirkiness of the game is interrupted with more emotional moments, which don't really work on the narrative level, but do work on the atmospheric level. The culminating point during the last boss-fight is the only narratively-sound idea. Mother 3 has much better writing that is emotionally compelling and has actual characters.
