If I had to guess, her power and wit were both shit. So she didn't have a good lead due to low wit and low power meant she failed to accelerate to her max speed, while the winning uma was a pace/late/end with proper power and as such sped past. Every position behind front has a multiplier for speed on their last spurt, which is part of why they need more power to accelerate to their max so they can surpass the frontrunners.
That's why a Golshi with 600 speed and 600 power will blast past the 1k+ speed frontrunner

No. Getting boxed in is a skill issue. The strategies are trade-offs and should be considered based on aptitude, support card setup, and their unique/support skills. The later in the pack you are, the less speed you need but the more power and navigation you need to offset it. It's just Bakashins who only know how to build a sprinting front-runner who freeze up when they have to actually train Power.

I tend to build every Uma I can as a late surger since my supports have a lot of skills for surgers and it's always exciting to see them steal the win at the end. Stuff like Nimble Navigator, Go with the Flow, and high power/wit (For acceleration to overtake on corners and skill procs/positioning) are essential and once you have it set up, it doesn't matter if the Suzuka/Bakashin in front has 500 speed on you because your Uma will blast past them at Mach 1 anyway.
