Gourmand is good for mile late or end runners, Hydrate for pace chasers, shake it out works for everyone as long as you've proc'd at least three skills. Though 777 is better in that regard. Basically if you're running Mile, medium, or long pace or late it's a decent option for recovery skills early on before you can specialize with more dedicated skills from cards, or have multiple options available.

A fresh new acc on jp servers running haru in the latest scenario can get her past SS and into U ranks trivially

your horse doesn't actually die but you get the rough idea. the whole concept of the game is maximizing your odds of success and over time becoming a breeder that raises uber-horses that are strong enough to survive misfortune and still dominate the competition. as a new player you have situations like Haru Urara having a race she's designed to come in last place on by a wide margin, as a long term player you can one day return to that race and actually win it through insane genetic meddling.
