Imagine you do a wily castle
but then upon completing it, there's another wily castle. okay, there's precedent for that, it has been done before, sure
but then there's third wily castle
and beyond that, there's fourth wily castle - the line just keeps creeping to new skull nodes, and you never know when it's going to end
The entire layout of the game from start to finish is like..

The game has two fucking world ending space stations (One was merely a decoy!)
and then a fucking wily ghost pops out of weil.
Please, keep in mind, that this is game 3, out of 4. How does the fourth game start? Well, it starts by sending you back in time, making you complete the first three entries. So, by beating this insane slog of a game, you are now ready to actually begin playing the fourth game.
I would unironically say this guy is up there with George Lucas, and John Kricfalusi... in terms of people who need somebody reel them in, otherwise they make a lot of insane decisions given full creative control.
