Not sure if production issue or singing technique issue: When I sing music that has gritty, distorted vocals in the vain of bands like Chevelle, Three Days Grace, I can't figure out how to get the grit to sound less like a fucking fry scream and more appropriate for the genre. Those bands and similar ones seem to have juuuust enough distortion in the vocal to add that angsty, angry sound but it doesn't into like a fuckin Bullet For My Valentine/Trivium/Killswitch Engage full-on _scream_. When I try to sing this stuff it's like all or nothing, either I sound like I'm trying to make intense metal vocals or I sound sparkly clean and I don't understand how to find an in-between spot. I do notice live some of these bands sound like they've got a lot more of a scream sound but I'm looking for the album sounds where you primarily hear the clean vocal but then the screamed/distorted bit is still present enough to kind of wrap around that clean and give it more body and aggression. Help?
