He was reacting to the trend of "assimilation" due to the liberalization of Europe. This happened in the 19th century because the caste system was dissolving and it stopped mattering what social class you were in. Hess tried to redefine the caste as a "race." That's the origin of the lie. Marx meanwhile tried to simplify things into economic classes instead, but that was also false.

Far less than 1 million. A very big percentage of these individual would identify as Jews. This is because most of those who identified as Jews were either zionist or communist at the time. The zionists had mostly left Europe before 1939, so those who stayed behind usually did so because they believed in communist ideology instead. The communists believed they would ultimately take over the world through some kind of communist utopia (with them in charge, of course) as commonly taught by people like Rosa Luxemburg, etc. Most of these people self-deported from Europe, or at least the areas controlled by the Nazi regime, due to the military advances of the Nazis. Some also participated in partisan warfare, evaded capture, or were arrested and sent to concentration camps.

The plan for those who were sent to these camps was probably to deport or send them to Palestine by force if Germany had won the war. Since they lost that never occurred.

Later, rumors and campfire stories of the horrific and gruesome atrocities allegedly witnessed (which are based on classical Talmudic exaggeration) grew into the mythos of the holocaust that is still repeated today. This genre of stories includes claims that we know are physically impossible.
