The Proxies should never have been the MCs, the MC should've been an agent with Wise and Belle just being NPC hacker companions. Making the MC an agent could've still allowed the writers to give them the same overarching goal of finding their mentor, they could've just wrote that "after their mentor went missing 11 years ago, the MC made it their mission to find them, and so they trained in the ways of combat to be able to delve into the Hollows themselves to find the truth".
And then write that they etiher formed their own faction or joined one of the existing ones. Hell, just write that the MC joined the Cunning Hares. There'd be only one MC and their gender is whatever you choose at the start of the game. The Proxies still exist as NPC's who your MC's faction contracts to guide them through Hollows.
Not only does this completely avoid the current problem with having to literally reconstruct the entire narrative from the ground up just to justify the Proxies entering Hollows and presumably one day being playable, not only would it avoid the problem of "muh MC needs to be able to fight and shit and aura farm" but it'd also allow the MC to have a much closer relationship with whatever faction they'd be on. Wise and Belle don't have that close of a bond with any of the factions because they aren't truly one of them. FFS, we can't even go to Cunning Hares apartment to this very day, or Victoria Housekeeping HQ, etc.
Making the MC an agent from the get go and making them part of one of their own faction (or one of the already established ones) with Wise and Belle as their NPC proxies would've been the most logical decision ever. There'd have never been the TV mode (which they were forced to scrap and it broke the entire story and gameplay loop), no rewritting the entire plot to bullshit the Proxies into going into Hollows, all of that would've been avoided.
Oh well.....
