Video games are meant to be an interactive medium where the player is free to express themself through gameplay, but what you can do with the gameplay is inherently limited by the nature of game design. The freedom you have to make your own choices and play the game your own way is always an illusion, you are always constrained by what the game allows you to do. No other medium is based on an inherent contradiction like this.
Letting the player break free of the limitations of a game's systems is one of Toby's favorite tricks to play with. Refusing to make a choice by backing out of a menu, forcing the game to let you attack when it's not your turn, exploiting the fact that you're controlling a pointer to use a dialogue box to teleport. Of course, all of these moments are just as scripted as everything else in the game.
