That's not the "whole gimmick" but it's part of it.
It's kind of acknowledging a huge blind spot with Undertale, where the whole idea there was exploring how your actions affect the characters and the game world but your own player character was practically a blank slate, to the point that you wouldn't even know they were supposed to be their own person until the end of the game.
In Detlarune, you know from the start that you've taken control of some kid and that they have their own life, personality and goals which might come into conflict with yours.

I must say I'm glad Deltarune feels a lot more realistic. You just couldn't take Undertale seriously with how much it hammered in "being a perfect angel to people who have gleefully murdered children and will continue to do so". This little one-off line at the end is really the only time pacifism is called into question.

Meanwhile the "pacifist" character in Deltarune is slowly becoming more bold and recognizing that sometimes you have to fight and is honestly more serious about this than the "mean girl" like when he killed Fake Gerson and said to abandon Jackenstein or they'd all fall. This game doesn't feel like it's being preachy.

Now here's a crazy theory fellas, you know how Gerson says the Lord of the Hammer was based on the prophecy, and how Dragon Blazers was based on Lord of the Hammer? What if, just what if, the prophecy has already happened once? I mean, how else would they know of The Roaring's effects? The Prophecy in Chapter 4 doesnt mention its consequences beyond the titans rising but nothing makes a mention of the eternal night that follows and the darkners that turn to stone.
If the Prophecy is absolute, then that means there was a prince of darkness before, there was a girl before, and MOST importantly, there was a CAGE before.
