That's not the "whole gimmick" but it's part of it.
It's kind of acknowledging a huge blind spot with Undertale, where the whole idea there was exploring how your actions affect the characters and the game world but your own player character was practically a blank slate, to the point that you wouldn't even know they were supposed to be their own person until the end of the game.
In Detlarune, you know from the start that you've taken control of some kid and that they have their own life, personality and goals which might come into conflict with yours.

I must say I'm glad Deltarune feels a lot more realistic. You just couldn't take Undertale seriously with how much it hammered in "being a perfect angel to people who have gleefully murdered children and will continue to do so". This little one-off line at the end is really the only time pacifism is called into question.

Meanwhile the "pacifist" character in Deltarune is slowly becoming more bold and recognizing that sometimes you have to fight and is honestly more serious about this than the "mean girl" like when he killed Fake Gerson and said to abandon Jackenstein or they'd all fall. Disingenuous as always, huh? Anon, people are complaining about it given how stupidly heavy-handed it is to the point it feels artificial and hollow, the scene is a trainwreck in a not humorous sense in context. While it makes sense for Noelle since she's an actual gamer girl, it doesn't as much for Susie when she doesn't play as much and yet somehow knows enough about it and when she even picks on nerds about it. The chapter even had something akin to the game she mentions and yet, you don't see Susie such piping up much about it.
The cherry on top of the trainwreck, is that the author's only intent about the whole thing, as if it's a smack across the face, is to say that they truly bonded over a vidya. It's like if let's say a co-worker asked if you watched a movie, you said you only watched a part of it while he finished it until the end, and by the end of the conversation he has the gall to say "Wow man, we sure bonded and got close together, huh?".
If even after all that, you don't get it, let's put it in thr simplest way possible.

When Toby worked with Andrew Hussie on Homestuck Hussie hired a bunch of progressive faggots that absolutely effected the story and ended up fucking up shit. This eventually lead to Andrew Hussie having a completely mental breakdown and the comic having a fucking SHIT ending.

Since Toby first hand experienced these events I hope he doesn't follow the same trajectory as Hussie. So far Deltarune is keeping up in quality and its still very much Toby( and Temmies) game. There are some cautious signs BUT so far stuff is good.
