In this version, Nicole turns out to be Sally's long lost childhood friend who Robotnik digitized into his computer because ??? he's evil shut up.
This is pretty close to the pitch version except Ben didn't seem to figure out Nicole's species, but he vaguely referred to her mind as human. Lynx Nicole wouldn't be seen until mid-2000's. The storyboard artist went with Archie's version because it's so iconic and they probably would've used the lynx design if the revival was greenlit and released in the second half of the 2000's.
