I can't get over how they made a whole arc where Tangle was separated from Whisper, made her complain through the whole thing that Whisper wasn't with her, end it with her saying she going to ask Whisper to go on an adventure and then it's never followed up on because the writers wanted to milk Whisper for trauma porn. Tangle never got to even try having a regular adventure with Whisper because it's immediately sidestepped into throwing her into a military group with a bitchy sheep neither of them have chemistry with and Whisper being to retarded to do anything but cry and sniffle in Tangle's arms

Shadamyfags assume the character in pic rel would initiate kisses and other affectionate physical actions. They make superficial assumptions about him based on his design and voice, they think of him as a generic bad boy and run with that.
There's got to be some sort of cognitive dissonance in hardcore Shadamyfags. They think, "Sonic doesn’t reciprocate, so she needs to find another "Sonic" who will."
In reality, Shadow would be worse than Sonic at reciprocating Amy's affection. He simply freezes up when he's touched and he doesn't even realize he should be returning hugs. Sonic at least offers side hugs.
00's Amy would quickly become frustrated and angry with Shadow's aloofness. Does she even have the patience necessary to work with a person who's deeply traumatized and shuts down any attempts to care about him? I think she'd eventually end up snapping at him and he wouldn't bounce back from that very easily.

To any oldfags here who were in the Sonic fandom from 1998 - 2009, what was it like? I got really into Sonic around 2014. I'm looking through a gallery of older official Sonic content and it gives me a sense of nostalgia even though I wasn't around for it. Logically I know it must've kind of sucked to be a Sonic fan then, since Sonic and its fans were such a punching bag while the actual game quality left a lot to be desired. But when I look at the art, characterizations, tone, music, etc. from that era it really appeals to me. It feels so soulful in a way we just don't get now.
It kind of sucks to become a fan of something only to realize a lot of what you liked about it was removed a few years prior in response to screeching boomers and journalists.

eggmoon was based and hilarious, bet half the people who bring it up didn't watch it. i also like that this extreme example highlights how sonic isn't always this super nice sociable friend who's around people, he will go off on his own independently and do what he wants regardless of whether or not his friends know or agree. he doesn't have rambling "relatable" internal monologues second-guessing himself at all even when the world's against him. this was lost a bit after shadow became a mainstay, they have sonic be friendlier and more reliant on others to contrast with shadow's behavior. also because the americans writing him now are obsessed with feminizing the boys and writing heckin wholesome slice-of-life slop. the hero can't go his own way and be self-reliant because toxic masculinity or something

I'm really struggling to understand why a character like Big was beloved in retrospect yet everyone hated and still hates Elise.
The kiss was really, really fuckin' bad though and robs the player agency if you chose Amy in the trial instead, but I blame that on the rush. Still amazing how five seconds can completely ruin a whole character in the eyes of the fans.

I think people hated Elise because it was the popular thing for media outlets to shit on so as a result, fans saw her as cancer. Silver managed to escape scrutiny (not without being shat on himself) but since Elise was an easier target being a human with a "realistic" design (that also affected Eggman's look, another thing people mad fun off) and especially being a one off character that detractors saw as a boring damsel, she was easy pickings.

Looking back, I like SonElise's basis. I think it works because Sonic is treated more as Elise's muse for everything she lacks, has been denied since her father's death forced to really accelerate on taking the throne, or can't allow herself to have because of Iblis:

>The freedom to go anywhere, meet anyone, and spend however much time with them as one likes
>The lack of pressure (as a duchess-to-be or the last line of defense preventing the apocalypse) to enjoy the small things in life, like rolling about in the grass and jogging to leave your troubles behind

SonElise's appeal is about a guy who enjoys life with such zest that it's infectious, his presence helping a girl repressing herself to start coming out of her shell rather than remain stagnant simply because it's safer - it's probably why they went with the whole "Sonic & Elise bond, Sonic dies, Elise revives him with a kiss" plotline, it's symbolic of the fact Sonic helped Elise actually start LIVING and her returning the favor.

I genuinely think the ending of Sonic's Story where Elise teasingly echoes back his advice about running first and worrying later amidst the collapsing Egg Carrier (contrast when they first met, when she panicked at Eggman shooting missiles at them), them almost not making it before getting blasted to safety by the ship exploding and tumbling around in the dirt, Sonic casually helping her up and her cracking up and laughing over ridiculously lucky they got, is one of the best scenes involving Elise in the game. If there was any potential for her character, it lied there.

I don't want to say it definitely because there are many more reasons the game was hated, including the fact that it was perceived as a huge departure whereas it wouldn't have been if the west was introduced to the series like that in the first place, but I've been thinking about it for some time and maybe it does. Either way I imagine SoA got snarky over the Japanese vision for the series getting called one of the worst games of all time, and that's how they got so much more influence over the series afterwards

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say no, because Robotnik's planned backstory was basically "what if Planet of the Apes but Taylor was an invader."
A lot of fans also tend to forget that the Kingdom of Acorn didn't really exist in SATAM. Mobotropolis was essentially a city-state. A lot of the evolved animals outside of the city were depicted as wandering nomads and primitive tribes. The SATAM version of the Great War isn't really explained either, but it's not hard to imagine it was at least caused by Robotnik's presence. Maybe people were conflicted over the human knowledge and technology he brought with him, and he kept up a good-guy act for years while plotting to overthrow the city as his base of operations. But that's just speculation.

It's a generational thing, people who grew with 2000's Sonic will not like, say, movie Sonic; and people who grew with the 2000's Spider-man Sonic won't like the MCU Spider-man (like me, I don't like Tom Holland's characterization, and the fandom seems to treat him as an uwu button, which is not how I experienced Spider-man myself).

Steven Universe heavily influenced the entire western industry to embrace LGBT themes/messages and that you don't need to have good action themes nor writing as long you pander to shippers and character drama. You can clearly see this with the later seasons of Adventure Time or shows like Owl House or Amiphibia. I think it's two fold. Deku/Steven are characters who exist to show that there doesn't HAVE to be just one kind of hero. That some people cry frequently and that's okay. Neither of them were made to villainize toughness. Deku's antithesis characters are just as if not more emotionally unstable than he is.
People get mad when that character template is brought onto their series. But neither of them inspired this for Sonic at all. Evan's writing style has been focused on interpersonal connections and vulnerability since 2006. A decade before Deku existed. This isn't some "infection" you're seeing or even a shift in culture.

Ian Flynn is a Western man in his late 30's who grew up consuming superhero shows and some shonen anime. Naturally that's why his two most recurring trends in IDW (the hero having mercy; gaslighting and abuse) are things you see in Batman.

I don't know Evan as well, but she seems to be more of a middle ground, someone who consumed manga and anime, and like Flynn grew up writing fanfiction. It's no surprise her version of Silver is more inspired by what she wrote before (turning Silver from rash youth to more "feminine" sweet guy who is constantly insecure).

This is why I'm not a fan of the constant policing of how a character should be written, because while feedback is appreciated, everyone just gonna write a character differently. It's absolutely normal and it has been a thing for ages in licenced media.
