Anonymous No.96465769

It's a resin print by them. I had ordered a box of failed prints that was full of random parts and pieces, and it included the parts of a couple vehicles (this being the only complete one). You can see where one wheel is kinda up off the ground (the frame's a bit warped) and the windshield frame is broken, but it's hidden by the roof. All in all, the quality for a 'failed' print is damn good.

Too bad they ship from Ukraine, which means it's gonna be a long while before I can get more stuff from them here in the US.

Actually Lysander would probably be a neat idea if it's just a model project and doesn't need a legal loadout. Replace the hammer with an big axe blade and shave the shield clean or replace it and give it a tusked helmet.

The chaplain might be a neat idea, there's some trim and the rib cage torso is a neat base for like an executionor. Ajac is almost as good as Logan since you can skip the silly walk or the big sergeant guy from the SW termie kit is probably the best option.

Does anyone else have troubles with depth perception? I'm having a hard time gauging the distance between my brush and the detail I'm trying to paint so I often bump into other parts of the mini. Is this something that is supposed to happen when focusing on things this small or are my eyes just bad?
Anonymous No.96469554
>>96469441
The times I have this problem are usually lighting dependent. What happens to me is usually painting dark on a dark area, the lighting lets me see the brush tip properly from one eye, but the lighting/glare are different in the other eye and I can't see the contrast from that angle so I lose depth perception.
Idk how bad or normal that is, I just try and be careful.

i'm spanish, every spanish movie has tits in it, i'm aware

it's more of an american thing yes, but still nudity is frowned upon outside it's 'acepted designated contexts', like beaches as you say, or movies, or local tv past midnight (this is fading out tho)

A couple of questions - hoping for a bit of advice:

1. Best drying retarder to slow down speedpaint drying time (for cloaks and large fabric items)?

2. Files for removing mould lines from metal minis? Currently using an Exacto followed by metal Japanese jewelry files, but they're a bit harsh.

3. What magnets to use for a removable shield from a dwarf mini? 1x3mm? And best source of loose shields/weapons (I see Reaper has a few sets)?

Thanks!

lol. I think it's time we accept that degeneracy in movies and videogames (among other things) WAS in fact harmful. If we just literally just did the exact opposite of everything we did from 1990 to 2020 things things would invariably be better because we know we made the worst decisions in all cases, even if people had good reasons to think they were right. Things wouldn't be perfect, but they would be better.

First of all, use more paste around the edges of the trees, so that they look they are actually part of the terrain. Then, start applying different textures over the ground; use fine sand in a spot, a bit larger grains in another. Add grass. Add larger rocks. brown leather is really simple to make visually interesting, every fold should be much lighter than the flat surfaces. put a wash over what you have and then rough edge highlight witht he original brown. literally doesn't matter if the wash pools or the lines are scruffy as that's realistic

phobos benefits from having a second colour on the armour imo, like with the boots have the inner and outer sections different so they're not just a block dependent on edge highlighting to give them shape. or the knee pads as squad/rank markings.

The only shading I see is for the metal parts, extend that to everything. The highlights I see are just edge highlights (somewhat crudely executed), so expand beyond that, and skip both a number of edges (like the inner edge of the pauldron's rim) and a number of entire items (pouches most noticeably, I think the red hand, but the camera isn't exactly doing a good job of showing that off). Also your paints seem a bit thick at times, with plenty of smooth plates having been "gifted" a not so smooth texture by the paint-job.
So on one hand you want to expand the shading and highlighting to be done to basically everything, and on the other hand I think you simply need a lot of practice. Paint, paint, paint some more.
Oh, and remember: the mini isn't finished until you've based it. No need to get terribly fancy, but just like the paintjob overall something beats the shite out of nothing.

Cool. As for your question, the most important thing when painting a female face is to keep everything smooth and avoid harsh lines and transitions. In this particular case I think the mouth is way too red compared to skin, which combined with that blue makeup and rouge on her cheeks makes her look a bit like a clown. There are a couple of decent tutorials for painting womens faces floating around /tg/, maybe someone could post one? I don't have them saved unfortunately.

I don't think there's any big science to painting cloth, most important thing is to make the transitions smooth. Using washes/contrasts will often give subpar results because you don't have as much control over them as with regular paints. Other than that you can do some fancier stuff to keep it interesting like imitating texture, adding a different hue to your shadows, weathering etc. I personally really don't like the way cloth is highlighted in the picture you posted, those sharp lines look really off.

Shading's gonna be the biggie. The anons that were talking about the leather? Absolutely right! If you're using Mournfang Brown or Doombull Brown, wash them with Agrax Earthsahde. After that dries, edge highlight with the same brown again. If you have Deathclaw Brown, use that to do a final really thin edge highlight as well.

>Shading for example, I think it would make the armour look too dark if I applied it all over
You are correct, sir!

>Where should I focus it?
When I use something like Agrax Earthshade over Evil Sunz Scarlet (or just Blood Angels Red, which looks pretty much the same), the dark areas should be in the joints where pieces of armour come together. If you can't get your shade into the crevices - or maybe if you don't want to go cross-eyed trying to be so precise - go back over the places that aren't supposed to be so dark with your original blue colour. Is that Macragge Blue, by the way? I would suggest using a dark blue or purple wash instead of a black one like Nuln Oil.

Save the Nuln oil for your gun metal, like that bolt pistol.

>Where should I highlight and how obvious should the highlight be?
Focus on the edges of things, especially the "top" edges - i.e., those that would be closer to or directly under the source of your strongest light, as opposed to something underneath or behind something else.

Is there a good way to center the dot so I don't accidentally carve straight through a barrel? My old method is to take an xacto, get it as dead center as possible, mark a tiny divot into the tip, then make a perpendicular divot, and go after it with vises going from smallest to largest. Then finish by sanding the divots away. Is this still the best method or is there something I don't know?

Unload brush onto something, touch it briefly to a paper towel or do a few lines on your thumb. Glaze with barely wet bush, do not drown the surfaces like when you are using washes or contrasts. Bonus to this is that even if you use glaze medium (I use Vallejo) which in my experience extends drying times in bigger quantities, it dries relatively quickly

I think I saw this in one of the Vinces videos and it works for me.

LA's is available in gallon bottles at Home Depot. NTA, but I immensely prefer it. Starts lifting quickly and even bores through varnish. You need to wear gloves and use a soft brush to scrub the models a couple times, but it'll PLOW the paint off of them. Last week I got some crusty-ass eBay Goblintown gobbos stripped of four layers of spray paint from an obvious and failed attempt at a zenithal. Took three sessions of a couple minutes scrubbing per mini in-between 2-hour soaks to get 99% of the paint off. Just dip the brush in the soap, straight, and scrub the mini with it. Don't let water touch the model until you're done scrubbing, it can cause some paints to react and gum up, and don't dilute the cleaner.
It's a mild potassium hydroxide solution with a booster of extremely vigorous detergent. Hazards are basically "don't drink it, don't eat it, wear gloves and wash your fucking hands'. You can use vinegar to neutralize it if you have a glove rupture or a spill, but keep vinegar WELL the fuck away from pewter. It starts lead rot if there's any in the mini and gets you a nice solution of (bioavailable) lead acetates. Which is extremely bad.

And he is retarded for doing so. Contrast is one of the few Citadel paints that is just straight up subpar. Most Citadel stuff is good, not enough to recommend them over stuff that is just as good but cheaper, Contrasts, however, are not good. They are inconsistent in how they handle, some are thing, others thick, most don't cover flat areas well (pretty common with the kind of paint used, however, when your product line of miniatures features a lot of flat panels, you get dinged extra hard here).

Speedpaints? Handle exactly the same. All of them flow the same, pool the same, cover the same, so you don't need different techniques for different paints. Contrasts don't even perform the same in the same shades and it's infuriating. AK is also good from what little I have used of it. Vallejo is too varied in terms of opacity with some areas requiring multiple coats to get a good shade which defeats the purpose, though their intense colors perform well.

All in all, AK and SP are the best choices for knocking out gray hordes that look good but not art competition level.

I'm not the biggest fan of Citadel, if anything they basically should have further defined Contrast into "thinner coverage with a lot of shading" and the later paints which are more "one bright coat with little shading"

But Speedpaints. Eh. First version had all sorts of problems that AP lied about, now even the second iteration has reactivation issues which cultists describe as a positive.

The regular colors have nice saturation but drying times are variable and often too fast (for me) to get large areas of fabric (cloaks) right without coffee stains, unless I really work fast and make sure my environment is as humid as possible.

The metallics also have nice saturation, but they don't really behave as speedpaints - I almost always have to go back in and add more depth and contrast.

I do like Army Painter products overall - they've come a LONG way in terms of quality, and they're good value. But maybe i'll give AK a shot - love their environment media (standing water, cracked earth).

Can anyone who has used AK paints post their thoughts? Thanks!

I've got a couple sets of the Army Painter drybrushes as well, the only non-W&N brushes I use. I always have trouble initially getting the brush coverage light enough to give a light drybrush effect, and if you mess up that first brushstroke it kinda screws up the rest of the job. Any advice welcome.

Surprisingly, I have never had that happen. However, the bottles with ball bearings in them often have a detachable nozzle (presumably to get the bearing into them), and if paint has dried in the nozzle and you squeeze too hard... - you can guess what happens next. :P

I've only tried quickgen of all the contrast brands so I can't make many comparisons but I can say they have a smell that persists in a wet palette until you fully wash it out, even if no paint gets in the water and the paper was changed. It's really odd. Slightly blackcurranty..Supposedly have the longest working time of all the brands.

Turns out I don't like how contrast looks so I'm going to struggle to get much use out of them. White Shadow has worked to cover up some fuck ups painting whites. Night Black looks like cheap ink has spilled.

I got this thing from heroforge. It's bronze but it's kind of pre-patinated or such, the black isn't a prime or wash or anything, it's just chemical oxidation or something.
Looks damn good as it is, but what would you do with it /wip/?

The alcohol will evaporate off faster than the water and lose concentration, so it will get less effective over time. It's also a very minor ignition and toxic hazard, but only in a small area.

I still want a diorama of orks painting models of little squigs or something
Anonymous No.96483076 >>96483108
Excuse this story, it'll be relevant in a second.
There is a little short (I think it's based on something else, but idk what) where a little demon (or alien, whatever) girl is raised in a post apocalyptic world by an android, and one day the world gets EMP'd and the android immediately shuts down mid step. The demon girl waits around for a long time for her to come back online but she never does.
There is a shot where it's raining and she's hunkering down next to the android and she had tied an umbrella to it so it wouldn't get wet.

Okay, miniature relevancy here. I want to do a little diorama based on this and I'm wondering what I could choose as the characters. The one that comes to mind would be like a grot and an ork in mega armor that has been shot in the head and is still just upright in the armor with the umbrella. but I don't love the idea of it being orks. I'm not sure there's any other options though, and it sort of makes sense because grots are retarded.
Any other ideas though?

The sources are inconsistent on this one.
Marine armor plates are made from ceramite, a bullshitium ceramic superalloy/composite that is both extremely durable and has amazing energy dissipation properties.
Multiple groups of marines are said to use/have used unpainted, bare ceramite armor, but the way it has been shown varies: Grey Knights have bluish silver, Dusk Raiders have dark grey, Nathaniel Garro has dark gunmetal.

>Is this also the proper thread to ask about figure and mini painting?
Since this is the /tg/ board, mostly what we talk about here are miniatures meant for games - Warhammer, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Battletech, etc. - but many of the ideas and techniques we talk about might be applicable to vinyl anime figures, if that's what you're asking. They are smaller than the real thing, so I guess *technically* that makes them miniatures, too!

I'd be surprised, though, if you wouldn't find a more directly applicable discussion in /toy/ or /m/, though.
