im also wondering what backpacks or luggage people use. i will be traveling around SEA. im thinking of taking a carry on sizr backpack fro clothes and another backpack for my laptop etc. that way i dont have to have any checked luggage. i traveled around EU for a couple months about 15 years ago and used a large backpacking camping style. i had to pack more and heavier clothes though and it was still kind of over kill. i was also thinking a small hard case would be good so stuff stays dry in the rain. all together i feel like the convenience of just a light laptop bag and another small backpack or duffle bag would be better.

I'm going to Santa Rosa for the Peanuts Collector Club Beaglefest event (a social gathering for fans of the Peanuts comic strip, Charlie Brown, Snoopy).

I'll be touching down at San Francisco airport on a Sunday afternoon, and I want to check in to a hotel for one night. I'm looking for a place/area to stay that's nearby shopping for toiletries and maybe some quick sight seeing before being picked up by a friend on the Monday afternoon for the drive to Santa Rosa. I'm travelling solo up to this point.

I found San Francisco Centre on a map, nearby to some hotels, so I'm led to believe this is a good built-up location. 10 minute walk to a walgreens pharmacy. Though online I'm reading this shopping centre is run-down. But don't know, is this good enough is or is there anywhere vastly better to stay? Any suggestions to add to this plan? e.g. places to visit here, opportunities to socialise a short while...

always wrong timing, transportation gets ignored, misses less popular sites etc.

The hostels that brand themselves as "party hostel" will generally put something together every night. If not just invite your roommate down to the hostel bar for some drinks.

It pays to research where you're staying. Don't pick any old hostel because some are actual shit holes with migrant workers paying for a cheap bed. Any hostel that has a bar attached is a solid bet for meeting other travelers.

Yes, it's easier than with a regular hotel. You get all types of people in hostels. But some sort of meet-up focused on a particular hobby/interest would be better.

The US is a car-centric country. Outside of major cities, you do need a car to do almost anything.

On the other side of the coin, that apparent inaccessibility might be why those national parks are "the best." Imagine if they were a shorter drive, or if they were easily accessed via public bus. It would get shitty so fast with the overtourism and the increased garbage.

Download the hostel world app and look at the reviews, some hostels are huge like a hotel and that makes it hard to socialise. Find a small one with good reviews in or around the centre of the city and just be friendly and chatty. Have a good Instagram profile that makes you look interesting and attractive, you'll probably use it for keeping contact with people. I used to be a bit nervous but honestly it's so much fun to find random people and get a beer with them and end up exploring a city together. It's the easiest way to punch above your weight in terms of hooking up with girls. Back home I could get a 5, travelling, with a bit of charm and alcohol I could get an 8. When it comes to enjoying nature/national parks, my advice comes down to this; "go far, go early." Go far, as in, to out of the way places, but also on longer, more technical trails, once you get there; anything more involved than a 5-mile out and back is gonna weed out 90% of NPCs. This one I was luckily able to block off, but sometimes they let in so much light you can almost read a book inside. I'm trying to get artistic references for the area for a fancomic I'm making (Puerto Rican girl isn't friends with locals, retreats to the nature park nearby, home is in one of the houses south of the three-tiered project housing) and amongst a general visit to New England for artistic inspiration of the original show, I wanted to travel to NYC for a community where a Puerto Rican family would live. I'm seeing stuff about crime and robberies, but I used to live in Houston and bike through some pretty ghetto and criminal neighborhoods back when I was younger and while people asked me what I was doing, no one bothered me when I told them I was biking through or doing campaign door-to-doors for Bill White.

My plan was to take the ferry or bus to the region, visit the Soundview Park Amphitheater, travel up Lacombe Avenue, walk by the houses south and then take a bus back. Daytime visit, no major stops, just some quick sketches for context and bounce.

I assume just take normal Amerifat common sense precautions? Also in a general sense, what sort of locations could I visit to experience and understand more traditional Puerto Rican culture in the Bronx or NYC in general? I could just research and look at streetview online, but I'd had this whole sequence set in the Ampitheater and I felt going there would make it more real for the story.

I know I'll lose RealTraveler points for this, but I got the Osprey Sojourn wheeled bag and like it after travelling a year with a decent regular backpack. If you plan to do much real /out/ hiking with your bag it's not the right choice, but it's great for normal travel, the only times I've actually used it like a backpack were in a few small towns with gravel or ancient cobblestone roads or in sketchy places where I wanted it strapped on and hands free but I like having that option and it was surprisingly comfortable

really depends on when you want to go
I typical travel 3-4 weeks in April and 3-4 weeks in October, that's low season almost everywhere and I usually book everything ~1month before

check public holidays, big sport / music / political events, trade fairs etc.
the more events, the earlier you have to book hotels & attractions
some special attractions are booked out for months though (e.g. Alhambra)
plane tickets always get more expensive the closer you get to your date

also the more flexibility you have (budget, time) the later you can book
a densely packed culture trip might be better to book earlier, while a bar hopping & party vacation can basically be done ad hoc

keep in mind that you have to plan ~6h to get from door to door Berlin to Munich (if you take the fast ICE)
or do the night train

either way 3 days is not a lot for any Berlin or Munich

Thought I'd ask here and on Plebbit to try and get a general feel for areas to look at it. It would be me and my wife, early 30s and no kids. We're both coming from very green areas so will be difficult to adjust to the desert. Been looking at places in SW Lancaster and Bear Valley Springs.
