The karma system is solid in theory, yeah, but the problem is they never really tuned the rewards properly. You end up either hoarding points for upgrades or blowing them early on utility stuff, which kinda kills the motive to style. The combat itself is deep as hell though—things like On Landing Cancels and essence manipulation give mechanical spice if you’re into that. It's just that unlike DMC, there's no audience watching your combo reel, you're styling for survival and mastery, not a letter grade.

Huge NGII (Xbox 360 version) enjoyer here but I actually agree with this anon. Last year I replayed NGB and NGII again beating them several times in a row for my last playthroughs of the games perhaps ever. I came to the conclusion that NGB is the superior game even combat wise. NGII has a lot of issues that hold it back from being as great as NGB and one of them is in fact the dismemberment system with the executions. It certainly looks cool but it does definitely change how combat plays in a pretty significant way compared to NGB. I still like it and I am not surprised this series will likely forever keep the mechanic though. Its in an ironic way a great way to casualize the combat. Ironic because Itagaki was obsessed with making hardcore games.

I am still able to play DMC5 but I find Dante hard to use unless I limit the amount of guns and devil arms I take with me. Even then I end up not style switching too much. He definitely feels like he is for only the most skilled DMC players. True, ultimate techniques have always been a staple, but Nioh 3 kind of waters them down. In NGB or NG2, popping a UT in a mob felt insanely hype, like you earned a goddamn breather. In Nioh it blends in too much with all the anime-flashy yokai tech spam. When everything explodes with particle diarrhea, nothing has any real impact.

Also, NGB punished sloppy play. In Nioh 3 you can whiff a UT, eat a bad trade, pop Living Weapon 4.0 or whatever we’re on now, and immediately melt the room. It’s less about execution and more about build tuning. Still fun, just not the same type of high-skill thrill NG’s UTs used to bring.

Yeah it really does anon. I had a lot more of an ability to play DMC4 good then DMC5. I was able to S rank Bloody Palace without the auto-combos. I only beat DMC5's with V using auto-combos. I did also get far with Nero but died to one of the Urizen fights just can't remember which one. It was quite exhausting. I don't think its that DMC5 requires more skill from the player either both games seem to require about equal amounts of it to me. I just got old and can't play these games as well. Kind of ironic considering Dante is the old man of the series yet he seems best suited for the younger guys to get good with. The bike is a great weapon though.

they made a good ninja gaiden game with ninja gaiden black, and for its faults ninja gaiden 2 did a lot of things well also. by the time that ninja gaiden 3 rolled around-- i highly suspect that many of the people who made the first 2 games were gone. and it did not have the unifying vision of itagaki. (for better or worse) so ng3 was kind of a trainwreck. but ng3 and ng3re came out so long ago, that i dont even think THOSE guys who worked on that are there anymore. (good) The newer DOA fighting games are also shittier compared to the older ones as well. there was a period of time before nioh came out that i was convinced that team ninja just would never make a good game again period---forget ninja gaiden. but nioh changed my perspective on that. and i think that the guys behind nioh are competent enough that they could have possibly made a good ninja gaiden game.

the only reason i made the suggestion that it could have worked, is that nioh is a slower game. and if we were going to end up with a brand new character regardless, perhaps it being a lower ranking ninja who is not as skilled or as strong as ryu, but maybe half way to his level could have been a good thematic compromise. i think it would have made sense to expand on the hayabusa village and the people who live there versus inventing an entire new clan for one character that is just as strong as ryu is anyway. some small influences of nioh would have made sense if it was a lower ranking ninja who was not as fast or as strong as ryu. and i suspect that older players would at the very least found it interesting playing as an underdog hayabusa ninja who trains with ryu and does not have all of his tricks, it would be a challenge, versus an overpowered "made up" new character.

I expect the game to be pretty good mechanically, yes I know the Black2 Remake is basically Sigma with blood and more enemies but I enjoyed it and at the end of the day Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, Sigma or OG is still better then 99% of CAG no matter the version, I did like the upgraded visuals a lot, they retained most of the original style pretty well. However Black2 has hot babes, they didn't censor the babes so I rewarded them with my money however for this game.

i think ninja gaiden is just one of those franchises where they need someone to do a final pass over it from time to time an tighten it up. the delimb ability on paper is interesting but in practice gets repetitive. i think if it was something like a 1/20 chance or something rare it would have a bigger impact when it happens. So you didn't even play 3/16 of the chapters. The third chapter takes place in a zeppelin with commandos with guns and the final boss is a fat guy in a cyborg suit shooting lasers. The games are full of that stuff. The first game has several chapters where you mainly fight the modern army (helicopters etc).

there are levels to this argument. you need to stop thinking in black and white autism terms and think critically. yes-people criticized the OT finishers in NG2 but accepted it.they dont cover half the screen and travel through multiple enemies yards away with no start up charge. OT being the new mechanic in 2 is also just ryu using his weapon in a normal fashion to do something. His sword isnt getting a blood pumped throbbing boner extending it 20 feet. thats just changes the game at that point. people heavily criticized the steel on bone mechanic later in the next game-and people thought everything relating to the arm was annoying. ng1 and ng2 fans agree almost unanimously that game sucked ass. sometimes its better to just go back to the basics instead of trying to reinvent the wheel with increasingly retarded ideas.

ninja gaidens changes over the years are not comparable to DMC. i like DMC by the way- but it had a rough start and the later games play better. DMC1 still has a lot of cool ideas in it though that i respect. Ninja gaiden stood out because they got the combat down with NGB which for all intents and purposes is the first game in the franchise. They didnt even need to make NGB they just decided to make a good game even better. Almost any changes they made to it were detrimental from that point forward or a trade off where one thing got better and something else got worse. thats where the arguing comes from. they already had a winning formula from the very start.

It was the Alpha and Omega of 3D combat design at the time.
