Berdly is actually funny and the game doesn't try and make you sympathize with him until after he drops the knowitall bit and lets loose his insecurity's, and he's vital in getting the Thrash Machine up in the final battle of C2. Not to mention he drops all his usual bullshit and tries in earnest to save Noelle from you in the weird route.
Alphys is just pathetic and manipulative and the game tries very hard to make the player just ignore all of that.

Thing is, Berdly's endearing because he's a teen rather than a womanchild adult, and even if he's dropping slang like Alphys would've, it's coming from a place of confidence rather than purely relying on self-deprecation, even if Berdly's angle is ego-boosted rather than utmost sincerity (which is still something he shows during Cyber World anyway, to incredibly great effect).
Alphys just comes off as a "GOTEM, FAGGOTS!" to weeaboos who also has the additional baggage of being responsible for the main villain AND other crimes against life itself (the Amalgamates), but Berdly is a completely genuine character that feels like the game laughing WITH weebs instead of laughing AT them.

Wait hold on when I wrote this I was kind of shitposting but now that Im thinking about it a little more its hard for me not to see it. Toby Fox has never really leaned into the unhinged theories that most of the fans like to conjure up, despite the lore he likes building in these worlds his story for Undertale was always a simple one. All the grief the monsters felt in Undertale sprung from Asriel dying, and most of the main casts plight was either a direct or indirect result of that, plus with all the music motifs leading back to Flowey and Asriel, it was pretty obvious what the main story point of Undertale was in retrospect.
With how Chapter 2 introduced the idea of the tragedy, 3 and 4 making a big deal of Kris's relation with the deer family and how Dess's disappearance was kind of a big deal that fucked everyone, and how Chapter 4 specifically made a big fucking deal about Dess's room, and how supposedly Kris made a promise or deal with the devil of some sort, what if Kris's main goal here is to save Dess, but he has to go through all this prophecy bullshit to do so. It would explain why Carol is so nice to Kris and us the player, what were doing is necessary to bring her back. Plus what anon said here >>714943518

Because the voice on the phone (whether that's Dess or Carol is irrelevant, it's pretty clear they're all working together) told him to, presumably he called them after the Chapter 1 stinger but before the morning of Chapter 2, while he was downstairs eating pie, that way he could tell them all about what happened so they could lay out a foundation for what to do next now that the soul's in place.
That's why Kris premediates the fuck out of "the time to wash your hands", because it's when he can start putting things into motion for TV World and everything that happens there.
What I'd like to believe in terms of the plan is that Toriel was never actually going to get kidnapped, that was all grandstanding to stall for time until Undyne, the true target, showed up, and it's why Kris creeped around outside and slashed Toriel's tires to justify a police investigation.
Undyne's disappearance is basically irrelevant to everyone in Hometown except Napstablook and Alphys (both incredibly pathetic individuals who'd never be able to speak up about this to Carol) due to the police being decorative more than anything, whereas Toriel disappearing would've been a huge freakout that'd put the whole town into utter madness and force Carol to acknowledge it and act.

It's just Hotland that is weak. The theme of a spectator who wants to artificially insert themself in the story technically fits but the execution through Alphys doesn't add anything not already expressed better elsewhere in the game.

Not quite in terms of the full package of what the CORE does, but parts of what it does are scattered all over, like Queen's Mansion having the music carry into battles, and Third Sanctuary being this "last stretch" before the big finale where all the shit from earlier in the chapter comes back in remixed fashion, coupled with new elements.

It can happen, but not at this point in the story. Kris is still afraid of getting close to Noelle due to prophecy stuff. If you make him ask Noelle out, he will either sound unnatural or just outright sabotage it. He needs to realize he has to fight against fate in the name of love.

I think Kris' behavior towards Undyne are his attempt to save Toriel from his co-conspirators.
I think that Team Knight had decided to kidnap Toriel (like it looked before Undyne appeared) and Kris schemed a way of Undyne entering the Dark World and becoming more of a threat so the sacrifice was swapped to her instead.
It would explain the opening the door, slashing the tires, and telling her about the Dark Worlds in chapter 2. Perhaps Kris doesn't have the power within the Knight conspiracy to try to dissuade them from sacrificing the original target and had to keikaku his way out of it.
