I enjoy it a LOT, but I played GFL1 so I have an attachment to the story and characters, GFL1 had a pretty goddamn amazing story and the main cast of characters were extremely well realised. They had full arcs, they grew, they changed, and sometimes they died.

GFL2's story has had some extremely strong moments so far, but it's still in the early/setup/world-building stages, it hasn't reached the kind of highs of 1. So, all that to say: The story is good, at times it's extremely good, and it's getting better and better. But it's not quite as good as I know it can be and hope it will be.

The gameplay is basically a better version of XCom on a smaller scale. The maps aren't as interesting and the objectives are usually pretty basic, but instead of having %Hit autism, it's all about teambuilding, team synergies and how you've built each individual character. There's an absolutely ridiculous amount of customisation available, down to choosing individual attachments for each gun, but generally people just follow guides.

The visuals and character models are fantastic, I would say without a doubt the absolute best in the industry. The gatcha model is generous, and overall I've had a lot of fun with it. I definitely recommend it.

Arknights, and I guess Azur Lane, are probably the two relatively large gacha games that come to mind that are ACTUALLY fucking gachas.
The problem I have with all the Mihoyim games like Genshin/HSR/ZZZ, with a lot of the new modern games like GFL2 as well, is that the gacha rates are so fucking hilariously low at like 0.2% that you almost NEVER actually get a unit before soft pity hits and ups the rate to like 6-8%
So it's never "Oh man I'm going to do 30 rolls and I might get lucky and get the SSR early" it's "I'm going to do 80 rolls and then see if I win the 50/50 for this unit"
There is no fucking thrill, there is no sense of luck and the hope that you might "beat" the system, you just roll until pity and then your "gacha" is whether you win the 50/50
If you don't, then it's another 80~ rolls (or whatever soft pity is in your game) to get your guaranteed unit.
So every banner is a planned 160 rolls, and if you get lucky it's only 80.
Meanwhile you play Arknights where the statistical average is 38 and pity is at 50 and you DO hit soft pity every once in a while but you also get PLENTY of SSRs from a single fucking 10 roll on a new banner with no pity, so there's a real THRILL to gambling on the gacha. That's how it should be. I should be EXCITED to do a 10 roll, not "Okay I'm going to do 7 10 rolls in a row and expect literally nothing of any value, because the rates are low enough I have to hit pity 90% of the time"
I've been playing ZZZ since launch (a bit of a mistake) and only ONCE in what has to be 1000~ rolls have I gotten an S-rank agent before soft pity. ONCE.

He's not a nameless, faceless NPC. He's not a silent protagonist. He doesn't just talk through through the occasional dialogue prompts. He has proper conversations and full dialogue all the way through.

He's a proper character with a backstory and a place in the world, we know exactly where he came from and what brought him to where he is. He's got friends, enemies, people who care about him and people who hate him, people from his past who we only meet during the game. He's got clear opinions on Rossartrism and Globalism and he was forced to watch his home-state get enveloped by the UNRC. He's got no super powers, he's got no special attributes, he doesn't have a special bloodline or a special destiny. The only thing at all that makes him different is that he's able to have empathy and love for T-Dolls in a world where most people can't and won't.

He was never going to save the world, at best he'd only be able to save those he cares about. And at the end of GFL1 he didn't even manage that. And, the trauma from his failures, his compromises, and the literal torture he went through to get through GFL1 are explicitly relevant in the second game, as he starts to face his past again and finds himself crushed by the emotions he'd left bottled up and unaddressed for so long.

In short: He's a real and proper character, not a blank self-insert.

As a new GFL2 player, I'll just say, don't worry about all the jargon and acronyms you'll see in the first few chapters. You don't need to understand it all, they'll get explained and get context anyway.

The game is pretty friendly towards GFL2 only players because returning characters are fully introduced and everything is explained... but it might seem a bit overwhelming at first since it starts in the thick of things.

The important issue with the Lotto system wasn't that the rewards were good or bad or whatever, it's the way the rewards were distributed.

Essentially

Tier 1 Reward: Really good
Tier 2 Reward: Amazing, probably better than Tier 1 for most people
Tier 3 Reward: Pretty good
Tier 4 and 5: Trash

If it had just been that a handful of people would get a Tier 1 or 2 reward and everyone else would get Tier 3-5 then most people would have accepted it, hey, that's how lotteries are, usually you don't win. You're jealous of the guy who got the amazing rewards but it's not the end of the world.

The issue was that they made the distribution generous enough that about 50-60% of the playerbase got at least one Tier 1 or Tier 2 reward.

So it wasn't just "A few people got lucky, good for them", it was "About half the players you know got a bunch of amazing rewards and you got shit all." It pretty much divided the game in half, gave hundreds of dollars worth of free shit to one half, and told the other half to eat a dick.

Nikke's pity system doesn't strike me as predatory.
Most gacha pity is banner specific and vanishes once a banner ends, and this pressures the user in a race condition to reach pity and possibly swipe when they have no other option.
Nikke's mileage points stick between banners, and you earn in just for rolling, regardless of an SSR pay out or not. So you can just keep a bank of them and spend them on the characters belonging to the jewish 1% pilgrim banners to bypass that shit entirely while only rolling on banners with normal rates.
If you want to go from 0 to 200 mileage in a single day, it's probably expensive as shit, I'd believe it, but it's definitely one of the more relaxed systems I've experienced.

Pulling mommies is also important. You'll be bored out of your mind training the same few horses over and over. You'll also never have access to your own good legacies because one and two star horses never get their special skill as a spark, you need the SSR mommies or upgrade your lower tier horses to three stars.
Since making my account I did a roughly 50/50 split of all carats I got between support cards and mommies. I have a workable roster now, had some 'luck' pulling vodka a million times so she's also at three stars now, and my support cards are enough to win careers most of the time.
I don't think going all in on a single support card, which you can borrow from any whale, is really worth it. Especially if you end up unlucky with nothing to show for it.
