People are saving money and downsizing because it's not convenient to spend a lot in current economic climate, where half of things you see now are scams or trash quality, especially when streaming services are being pushed hard. And it's not just video games, it's also car purchases and tech. People are rather buying older shit than new things because new tech and cars are trash quality. Well, they were cheaper actually, PC game were between 30/40$ most of the time, console game were more expensive, yes, but back then, you could rent them and their prices in the used market was very cheap. In top that, a lot of them came with actual manual (multiple pages, with colors for some), and they were properly debugged and tested before release, so in the end, nobody was really complaining about the price because the quality was there and things were fair.

I have not actually purchased anything since 2021 when I started properly working on stuff that occupies my time and entertains me more than games themselves could. Like, legit if I try to even play anything right now, I mainly feel like I'm wasting my time when working on my own projects that I make money off of too is way more fun and actually helps me achieve something other than the fake sense of achievement that video games give you.

I only ever play something like once or twice every 2 months or so when I really feel the urge, and when I do, it's something I have played in the past, like Chivalry, if I want some multiplayer action, if not, Crusader Kings, for some singleplayer autism. That's it. I have not touched any latest AAA release or even indie games. Only thing I know for sure I will play once I'm done with my current project is Ghost of Tsushima and then I'll likely go back to working on something else.

There's just genuinely nothing coming out that interests me in any way whatsoever, and I also lost that feeling of "having nothing to do so I'll just waste / occupy my time with video games" ever since I found something to do that I actually really enjoy and gives me far more pleasure to work on towards completion than games themselves do.

Recently I got a ARPG itch and thought about getting Diablo IV, then I looked it up and cost $70 and is a always online live service, one day they will take it down, so I decided to buy Grim Dawn instead and used the remaining $50 to buy groceries for the weekend.

After replaying Cuphead last year, I really got into 2D plataformers, the Genesis and SNES libraries held the line, most 2D plataformers releases today are mid, and the only recent AAA release in that genre was Super Mario Wonder, that required me to spend at least $200 for a used Switch and the game, I decided to emulate SMB3 and the Sonic original triology instead.

The people with enough drive to pursue what they want will find their way and the rest it's supposed to protect don't gain anything but an even more sheltered worldview.
A set of decent moral values and good internet habits were enough to carry any kid through the internet but it's just a single slice of 1-2 generations who got to grow up like that. Education will always be the most important and society has failed to build up that habit.

I don't know what to call this phenomenon but among the people who do care and are smart and want to improve things they have found that there is an incredible amount of resistance towards any sort of improvement. I understand that if it is broken don't fix it, but it IS broken and inefficient and anybody trying to fix something is shot down. Like I know someone who was trying to get everyone paid more (it's government so it's not like the "boss" pays the salaries) and he got so much push back from basically all his co-workers because they were from a generation where their husbands made enough to support the family and their income was basically irrelevant so they didn't need more money and wouldn't fight so their younger co-workers who required two-incomes to maintain a household could get maybe a bit closer to 1.5-income households. And salaries have been stagnant for nearly 30 years in this field because it's work that was primarily done by moms who picked up their kids from school.

And on the flip side, when people do want change, they want the stupidest shittiest ideas that just don't do anything like catered lunch on Fridays or some stupid shit like that. And this pertains maybe to physical fitness - schools just stopped forcing gym on kids. Because we made it socially acceptable to not be able to run around the block that nobody has to be fit anymore. I should say that every generation has shit on the current generation because they can't pass some kind of fitness threshold but the least society can do is make sure a kid leaves high school with a 10-year fit heart.

The economics of $80 video games was different 30 years ago. Wages have been stagnant, but they were relatively higher compared to cost of living at that time. Consoles were cheap $200 to $250 toys, and game cost generally translated to the size of the game. An $80 JRPG may be more expensive up-front, but it would have 40+ hours of game play, while the $60 game would be much shorter.

Today the $80 games for $600 consoles and $1500 Windows 11 Gaming PCs are big multiplayer titles which require putting together a group of friends to enjoy, and that have little or no single player when you can't.

It isn't that surprising that younger people who have significantly less buying power today compared to 30 years ago are just playing cheap casual games on their phones. Or buying $400 handheld PCs like the Steam Deck to play slightly less casual $20 or less games.
