Has Vanillaware ever expressed interest in doing a traditional sequel? At most it seems that they'll take elements from previous games and iterate on them in entirely new games, but they'd never make a Muramasa 2 for instance. I wonder if they just have that much respect for their own storytelling, most of their games end pretty decisively and don't lend themselves to traditional sequels.

I respect Vanillaware a lot of no sequels are generally not even doing the same genre often. But god damn, their games are so close to being so fucking good on a gameplay level but they drop the ball in so many small ways that a sequel could easily fix. UO you can see the seeds of greatness all over it.

One of 13 Sentinels' biggest problem is the having 13 characters. There's bound to be at least one character in the lot the player won't care about or may even hate, and the game honestly has a few of those to me. Could have distilled the main cast down (including getting rid of the gay character). The overall story relies too heavily on plot twists, as well. And the combat could at the very least be visually redone. The game is my least favorite Vanillaware game I've played/beaten by a large margin, and the only two I haven't at Grand Knights History and Grim Grimore.

But I do appreciate Vanillaware making the best visual novel there is even if there's not a big demand or market for it. I think it beats text box/portraits that you get in 99.9% of VNs there are.

I think the biggest thing the game is lacking is an extended end game time to actually use all your characters. You're basically just continually recruiting new characters all the way to the end of the game and you never actually get chance to use them all cause the game just fucking ends. The game needed like a surprise secret final boss hidden behind the main one with an extra like 10-20 hours of story where you can use every single character.

An actual NG+ or Hard mode. One that lets you carry over your squads to fight harder enemies. TZ is fucking nothing, it's just the same game again. Game just came out last year. You do know how long game development takes? Just Bravely Default (2012 JP) > Bravely Default: Second Layer End (2015 JP) > Bravely Default 2 (2021). We're not even at the start of the halway point of development if they started development of the sequel immediately after and not just doing a new game because they are a small studio. They only have 39 employees as of 2024.

I disagree that Unicorn Overlord needed another 10-20 hours, it's already a long game that sorta overstays its welcome as it is. What it needed was to be better paced - they should have made it so that all of the recruitable characters are recruitable earlier in the game than they are, then the last 10-20 hours of gameplay could have been missions to let you take advantage of your huge roster. With the UO that we got, the way missions play basically doesn't change at all for the last 40-50 hours of the game, and the only thing keeping anything new is the drip feed of named recruitable characters, but that's not a good hook when the player already has 60+ characters in your roster. As a result, the entire last continent just feels like tacked on game padding. Vanillaware should have given the player all the characters earlier in the game and then made the last continent focused on missions that try to force the player to use their full roster.

tldr the game was fun but missions are too samey. i want them to give me the characters earlier and then make varied missions once they know i have a diverse roster to work with.

I think the game could have actually been better with a much smaller cast. Like maybe 2/3 or even 1/2 the size. So many of the characters get so little screentime that you just forget they even exist.

Like why the fuck do Magellan AND Jeremy exist? Why couldn't they just have been 1 character with twice as much screentime? Also, I think the (technically) open ended region progression hurt the story. Like, you can theoretically go to Bastorias super early in the game, if you can find a way to beat the mission to enter it. But that winds up meaning that none of the characters you get in Cornia, Drakenhold or Elheim can play a role in Bastorias's story, since you can technically get there before recruiting them. This leads to even the allegedly important characters suffering from a problem where they only do stuff briefly in their home region and then basically vanish.

Hell, that even explains Scarletts problem. You can technically ignore the mission to save her and go the whole game without her. But that just makes it so they couldn't give her any fucking time in the spotlight the entire game because the player MIGHT not have rescued her.

So it leads you to wonder. While it's neat that they planned for the possibility of all these hyper-specific, highly un-intuitive routes to play through the game, was it really worth it? Was making Scarlett and so many other characters almost completely absent from the overarching story really worth it for the .001% of players who will, for god knows what reason, ignore Scarlett and rush to Bastorias on their first playthrough?

I kind of wish there were more reasons to use other classes. By the time I got all the beastmen for example I already had my perfectly formed and trained armies and I really didnt want to learn new combos.

Like maybe if the game was broken up more and you had opportunities to lead the original resistances in those areas and had to use those characters. Or at least make that DLC I guess

It would certianly help if there were faster methods of unlocking said conversations, but I think I'd still prefer that over a TRPG with a comparatively tiny cast. The conversations and large casts add a lot of replayability to those types of games imo and you get to learn more about a character the more time you're willing to put into them which I find interesting.
There's also the gameplay aspect of using a character that you maybe entirely ignored on your first run, but that part doesn't really apply to UO as much since the game is so easy that unit builds are pretty much pointless.

Vanilla Ware is owned by the studio itself, they do co-releases with other publishers and the company heads hate pirates with a passion. Vanillaware needs to do something because Unicorn Overlord nearly bankrupted them. They needed to get loans from banks to finish Unicorn Overlord and start selling it. Who knows how many more hail merry chances they have left. Vanillaware has never made AAA huge titles that sell a lot. They are squarely in that niche enthusiasts market.

I just beat this for the first time last week. I pirated it day 1 because no PC release (fuck you VanillaWare let me pay you for a PC port) but I took long breaks inbetween each region. Drakenhold and Elheim were a treat to play through, but I hate the furries so Bastorios was a snore fest, and Albion was just OK. That last level of Albion was really cool though. I kept looking at the map beforehand and thinking "you could totally fit like 3 levels in that space there" only to be introduced with that long trek with Nigel. That one was a blast.

Wifed up Chloe because I love her. Praying that she gets a figure, have all of the others on pre-order. Won't get the furry when she eventually gets her figure though.

As a company, they have a history of running low on money at the end of their long dev cycles, the game selling pretty well, and then surviving by virtue of being a smaller dev so the cash pile from the previous game takes a while to burn through.

Hilda, 2 other Wyver Riders, Selvie, and Tabitha was my most consistently high DPS and survivable unit in the whole playthrough. Throw Sandstorm on Selvie, Dragoon Dive on a generic, and keep Tabitha as a heal bot. Literally had to hold them back from killing Galerius because I wanted Alain to get the kill for the plot.

I'll be honest with you. I like the game but the combat is kinda frustrating to me. Mostly because of the large amount of cast and there's no guide to make the best party composition. Angels cock block the player, their whole meta is reflecting and defending. You need physical attackers and people that buff them. You relied too much on the magical people, which the Angels hard counter. Anybody end up rocking some weird teams? I ran Berengaria with a full elf team, Rosalinde, Rylanor, Eltolinde, and Ghislain, and they dumpstered on anyone without explicit counters to magic. Bern and Rylanor frontlining/tanking and letting the other elves buff/dps was a really solid strat. Bern is just the oddman out but slots in so well oddly enough.

You don't need characters to guard everything, focus on rebuilding your current region.
One good first steps: After getting back to the continent, explore the area, gather materials, rebuild the harbor. You should be able to do that without getting into the next mission. Go back to the island, do the missions here, garrison the villages. Also, buy the runic sword. They are great, the best investment with your meager money in the beginning.

Good thing to compare it would be Supergiant and Hades 2. It is good sequel that expands on the previous game, from the developer that made better and better stand alone games over time, same as Vanillaware.

I had fun with it for what it is, but the game doesn't feel evenhanded enough on each side of the game in terms of content. I was enjoying the game early on a good bit because when I got tired of just reading I got to break it up with the strategy gameplay, then get back to the adventure part of the game, and that made it easy to sink a good amount of time into it in any given session. The amount of content in the adventure side of the game so heavily outweighs the amount of content in the strategy side that you end up just having nothing to do but read for the vast majority of the game at some point though, and it became a lot less engaging at that point.

I know there are a large amount of additional challenges unlocked after you beat the game of course, but that doesn't change the issue with how much it balances the adventure side against the strategy side still.

I've played this game 7 times and have over 400 hours in it.
I do not understand why I can motivate to do this when I usually get bored with most games when starting a NG+.
In addition to 2 standard playthroughs, so far I've done the following challenge runs:

>Alain + Scarlet + Generics only (Only way I'd ever ring Scarlet)
>No Cavalry (Alain is surprisingly still decent as a pre-promoted infantry tank)
>Alain + Harem (Meli gets the ring and only unique girls allowed)
>Age groups (only allowed one character from each decade in a squad. Teens, 20's, 30's etc)

I've got plans next for a single target attacks only playthrough, so no row, column or nuke attacks.
Anyone have any other ideas for playthroughs? I like this game.

While the overall game is simple the ceiling is quite high without being too overwhelming. Which can lead to a more enjoyable experience on NG+ or another playthrough. All they really needed was an NG+ mode with beefed up enemy levels and formations, and an increased level cap too I suppose.
