Well it just depends on what you like. Want some sci-fi? The Martain is a delight. Want a little more fi in your sci-fi while staying kinda grounded? Project Hail Mary is great. In fact that is the one I want to recommend. It's exciting, funny, heartwarming, can be terrifying at parts if you can really get immersed. The main character is pretty relatable and the book is from his point of view and he starts off with amnesia so you are figuring out shot with him as it goes. There is more I want to buzz about but I really don't want to spoil it. It's a fun adventure. I read it a few months ago and I was having so much fun I read it in 3 days.

This fear is not based in reality. If you enjoy and or into the book you definitely going to remember it even more so because its text rather than screen based information. I read garth nix's sabriel and it was fucking kino. Got me into necromancy and into the rest of the old kingdom series

The vast majority of books are only as long as they are because of historical tradition, it's a medium that's normalized having massive amounts of filler and taking eons to get to the thematic point. There are very very few novel-length stories that wouldn't be massively improved by being cut down to 10-20% the length.

I'm on the 2nd book right now, Lirael. I've read Terciel & Elinor and Sabriel and so far they have been a very pleasant read. I was not expecting it to go so deep into themes of death and loss. I agree that there are many loopholes in the story but if you are going to start reading books, its a very easy read. I reread them last year and I still enjoyed them as much as when I was a child. Perhaps it's nostalgia, however if you were a person who never read them, would you not want to at least read them to see what the hype around them was all about in the 00's?

The Belgariad series by David Eddings. Fairly entry level fantasy, but cool worldbuilding and neat concept of magic.

The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb; darker style of fantasy than LOTR, but with great character building (flaws and all) and again, very cool magic concepts.

Magician by Raymond Feist. (and the two sequels, plus the Empire trilogy with Janny Wurts). Again, great worldbuilding and interesting characters; a lot of stuff cobbled together from Tolkien and real-world history (race of invaders are basically Edo-Japan era warriors), but big in scope and there's almost 3 dozen books in the whole series if you want to go balls deep on them.

image is mostly for banter, but a lot of the titles are genuinely good.

Fred Saberhagen's got a good repertoire:
for fantasy, Empire of the East or Book of Swords trilogy (followed by the sequel series The Lost Swords)
for scifi the Berserker series

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy trilogy by Douglas Adams (a misnomer, there are ~6 books)
Through the Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King (written for his kids, who weren't a fan of his horror novels)
Pegasus in Flight by Anne McAffrey
The Phantom Tollbooth
anything by Kurt Vonnegut
Pride & Prejudice & Zombies

mysteries:
Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Yeah, I guess Beor, Huor, Tuor and Turin Turambar were just fucking around aimlessly, as well as those Men who fought in the War of Wrath
>more easily corrupted
Not by much, judging from what we read in Silmarillion
>physically weaker
Not a big deal, especially for the Edain
>spend their initial years as slaves to Morgoth
This is merely an assumption, not a hard fact.
>betray elves at the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, hated/mistrusted by them ever since
Yeah, so fucking what? Elves were betraying and killing each other left and right kek

What really matters, however, is that Men will participate in the Second song of the Ainur while the Elves will perish alongside old Arda.

I used to love the Belgariad and would recommend it to all my reading friends.
Although my memories are a bit tainted now that it's been revealed that David Eddings and his wife spent two years in prison for abusing their adopted children. In the 1970s no less so it had to have been really bad.

also, based chart. Good to see some Gormenghast representation. But did you really find it harder to get into than the Silmarillion? Once it comes time to keep track of all those Elves with similar-sounding names it became excruciating. I had to tackle it in audiobook form for me to absorb anything.
Gormanghast may be as slow as molasses but it's pretty easy to keep track of the characters.

>i like worry if i read a book, i wouldn't remember the whole story.
Well, for one, you're selling yourself short. If you enjoy the story the story beats will be etched in your mind to ponder on for years.
For two, No, you will not remember every tiny detail. That is fine. A good thing, even. That's what makes rereading a book later down the line so good. You'll remember the greater story but pick up on all kinds of fine details you didn't notice the first time around and it can really enhance how much you enjoy it.

But that all comes down to how much you enjoy the book. You won't really know what you'll enjoy until you just read some stuff. You don't have to start off with 2000 page novels. Find some shorter books or books that might be recommended reading for schools. Those are usually shorter and easy to digest. I always get a little flack for it, but I fucking love White Fang. Read it as a kid, I'll reread it every few years. It usually comes bundled with a shorter book to read first, Call of the Wild. They are kind of opposites. Call of the Wild is about a dog that goes wild, while White Fang is about a wolf that goes tame. It's a great little survival story and if you like animals at all you'll probably have a good time. If you REALLY liked the survival theme then you can step up to something more substantial. Clan of the Cave Bear is another fave of mine. I mean from White Fang to Clan of the Cave Bear is one hell of a leap but if you like survival you'll probably be into it. But this is all shit I like. You have to find you and the only way to do that is to hop in.

29. First person PoV is kinda lame. He shoulda fucked the ocean. The book should have leaned into the horror elements more. Something AT ALL should have happened. It was like a slow burn that just fizzles out instead of turning into a satisfying fire. There was some parts I did genuinely enjoy. I liked the awkwardness and tension of the early scenes and conversations. But once again, it goes nowhere.

Kindle.
Long story short, my parents had kindles and I thought they were the stupidest shit. Then they got me one for Christmas. I was determined to hate it, but with reason. I loaded it up with a few books and absolutely fucking loved my kindle. It's not perfect and there are a few things to complain about but over all I fucking love that thing. I read more books in the first year after I got it than I had in my life up to the christmas that I got it.

Also, I'm talking a kindle like the Paperwhite. The e-ink display ones. Do not go with the one that is basically a tablet. I think they are called the Fire. Don't get that. My recommendation is the paperwhite series. The backlight in it perfect and easy to adjust and I won't shut up about how much I love it.

they exist in a weird period in fantasy literature; post-Howard but pre-Tolkien.
In many ways they feel like more refined, less repetitive Conan stories but they introduce a lot of fantasy staples for what I think may be the very first time.
also, I think F&GM might actually be the origin of the idea of a "Thieves Guild". I know that Discworld is full of jokes and references to this series.

Read The Witcher
The first two books are unique as they're entirely filled with short stories, 20-40 pages each. Then the real proper novels will have call backs to the short stories but it isn't the end of the world if you forget a character or event in those stories. Some parts may require rereading because of how chaotic they can be though, specifically Time of Contempt.

Malazon book of the fallen, but that depends on if you can deal with how the story is told. You have many different characters moving the plot forward and world building that won't quite make sense until later books, but when everything clicks the series is absolutely great, and even better on the second read through. Terry brooks has good world and character building as well, but I'd stop after the heritage of shannara series unless you like steampunk. the prequel book was also good.

Serif fonts are ones with the little embellishments, called serifs, to them, example being if you compare the T used on each of the three covers in OP to the T which is used in the standard sanserif font sanserif fonts being ones without the embellishments you'll see used most places online.
It's neither a good thing or a bad thing though, just a kind of font that would not be typical of minimalism since it includes the embellishments whereas minimalism would want to avoid that and would typically use a sanserif font.

I've been reading a lot of trashy 80's horror novels that deal with apocalyptic scenarios. some of them are great.
>The Fungus, by Harry Adam Knight.
A London Biochemist is trying to solve world hunger by developing a strain of extremely fast-growing mushrooms. it turns out that the enzyme that causes the rapid growth is transmissible across different species of fungus and soon a lab leak leads to every species in the area going berserk, killing people and taking over the country in a nanobot grey-goo esque scenario with a faint hint of The Last of Us.
>The Rats trilogy by James Herbert
highly aggressive and intelligent killer rats begin to spread over the UK. the first two books involve government scientists eventually getting the problem under control but by the third book world war 3 happens and there is a nuclear exchange, so the tidal wave of rats emerge from their hiding places with nobody to stop them. in a followup graphic novel called The City rats have taken over the ruined world and humans are tolerated as reluctant cattle that are randomly slaughtered for food.
Possibly an inspiration for the Skaven from Warhammer Fantasy
>The Fog, by James Herbert.
Essentially 70's 28 Days Later/Crossed.
An earthquake releases a toxic bacterial gas from a government bio-warefare storage bunker. any creature who breathes it in begins to become psychotically violent or suicidal after a few hours and dies of seizures after a day or two. Since the gas is alive it continues to grow into a larger and larger cloud as it is blown around the country by the wind.

It's just that odds that it's an alien are pretty low; all the speculation I've seen on this topic is that if an alien civilization wanted to defeat us they could just accelerate a 12 mile long mass to 10% of the speed of light and let ballistics handle the rest.

Tolkien put a lot of effort into using english in a very particular way which is usually missed.
He deliberately uses the old english/german words for things and it makes the story seem more tangible, since these words usually describe objects and locations in english rather than concepts.
This is part of why lord of the rings is celebrated and regarded highly.

This is the last book I remember reading and really having an effect on me. Specifically, the first third of the book slowly ramps up to become insanely stressful and terrifying, but the sensation of that feeling vanishing when the otherworld family nonchalantly plucks the parasite out of her foot was really striking. It was like one of those three-dimensional reading feelings where the author demonstrates something to you. In this case, it’s making a point about perspective and fear by showing a girl experiencing what she and the audience obviously feel is a nightmare scenario, then having it casually solved by much more experienced characters who basically see it as a pest control scenario, all tied together with the physical relief sensation of having something you didn’t know was there pulled out of your body,, but, y’know. Anyway, I didn’t finish it, but the first part was cool.

I'm going to bed soon but the TLDR is that it uses a different part of the brain and the way you acquire and retain and process information is not the same. When you read words you go at your own speed and process and interpret and reread multiples times without realizing it and you retain and can breakdown information much better than listening to someone speaking words to you.

also even if you don't like the story, LOTR has exceptionally written dialogue.

TL;DR, girl wanders into the magical zone unprotected to see the magical people, picks up a magical parasite without having any idea, and an evil stepmother dressed in all white suddenly shows up and starts being allowed to completely dominate and ruin her entire family’s life, culminating in a scene in a field during a thunderstorm where she’s levitating in front of her and monologuing about all the stuff she’s gonna do. It’s pretty scary. Maybe it resonated with me because I was treated unfairly by an abusive family, but none of this is unfamiliar territory for fantasy books.

Y.. yeah. That happened. There were 2 or 3 sex scenes in there. And yeah the one noble getting all horny at the fallen noble washing in the fountain was a thing.
And now that I think of it, every time that happened the author me turned the pubic hair. I guess he likes his girls bushy. The sorta sequel World Without End was hornier. And a little rapey. Well, not a little. One was just full blown rape.

I haven't read in a long while but I used to read a lot, The Neverending story is still my favorite book despite reading Tolkien and plenty of other fantasy books. It's just a shame that the movies were so different from the book with some horrifying revelations being made about both Bastian and Fantasia.

I jailbroke all 3 kindles I've bought over the years and pirated all but one book. I don't know how they feel about it these days but when I first got my kindle there was a little kerfuffle about digital books. I don't remember the whole story but at some point Amazon said, in so many words "Okay, this is a snippet of the source code that Kindles run and how computers hook into it via usb. You totally shouldn't look at it and learn how to jailbreak your kindle devices even though the investors forced us to put some in some bullshit limitations on the device that no one else is happy about. After all, if you jailbreak it there is no way to stop you from using all kinds of different, free, widely avaliable ebook formats that you know and love!"
Legit one of the only times Amazon was super cool and just wanted people to read.

Slop doesn't necessarily need to be derogatory, it just describes something homogenous.
Discworld is fantasyslop in the same way a homecooked casserole made by your wife (she loves you) is wifeslop.
Food analogy I know but it's hard to convey the point that slop can be highly enticing and enjoyable without going there.

I've read all the Mistborn books (decent to good), Warbreaker (good), Elantris (not good), and The Way of Kings (not good). His main strength is just being able to finish a story, that seems to be rare in fantasy these days, but the writing is nothing special, his dialogue is generally pretty bad, and most of his characters are boring and unlikeable.
