Yeah an adventure game using the mechanic with light combat would be better instead of being a shitty platformer where it's central gimmick isn't actually that important except for shooting guns or opening a door.

Hybrid games were largely a thing simply because gameplay standards didn't exist yet or were still forming. They were an actual product of its time, and basically went extinct after early 00s.

Omikron The Nomad Soul. Incredibly ambitious and clearly held back by the tech of the time. I still have no idea how some literally who french faggot managed to get David Bowie to make the soundtrack for the game.

Also Silent Hill 4 if Konami are gonna shit out UE5 remakes it's the only game I wouldn't mind because the core concept of being trapped in an apartment is incredibly interesting and it doesn't matter if they ruin a bunch of shit from the original since it's not that important and the game needed more dev time with parts of it needing to be redone from scratch anyway.
Anonymous No.718622150 >>718623397
>>718621745
Bowie was interested in tech, saw the game and thought it was neat. He didn't make the soundtrack though, he just let them use songs from an album he was already working on so long as he could be in the game.

Omikron is so disappointing because like Messiah it's built around a gameplay concept that actually has no real affect on the actual gameplay because there's never multiple ways to do things that can depend on which body you're in. It only comes up at predetermied points where the story forces you to switch.

The problem I have with Omikron is like I said here >>718622150 where the body swapping is the game's central gimmick yet there's one area in the entire game where it's used in the way you'd think (using Bowie's wife to sweet talk info out of a guy which saves you like 5 whole minutes of gameplay). Other than that, there's never a point in switching characters beyond when the story forces you to because being a theif or journalist or whatever has no bearing on anything that happens, never changes dialogue, etc. So it's underbaked and you have to contend with awful FPS sections and even worse Virtua Fighter sections.

Actually, you're actively punished for engaging with the game's central mechanic and selling point because switching characters means you lose all of your stats and money. It desperately needs a remake by an actual competent developer that focuses exclusively on the good stuff, cuts the bad shit and makes the fucking core mechanic worth using.
Anonymous No.718623791
>>718623397
wasn't there another game with the body swap mechanic called Geist?
Anonymous No.718623956
>>718623397
The different characters have different stats, taking the body of a big guy will help you with the fighting segments and IIRC you can go to some characters apartments. But yeah in the grand scheme of things the game never asks you to pick a certain archetype to go to certain places or reacts to who you're playing as. Still I think it's neat and I did enjoy the mechanic and I liked how you can find an NPC and if you like their body you can play as them, even if it's mostly aesthetic.
Anonymous No.718624192
>>718623180
Yeah, knowing Goober they're gonna completely miss the point again and make you fight monkeys for 20hrs instead of focusing on the apartment. And there's no way the peeping mechanic stays in because it's heckin' problematic to spy on girls without their consent

Destrega:
A free moving fighting game that has a very fun core, but is rather barren in terms of content and could honestly do with something akin to Soul Calibur 2/3's long single player campaign modes or something else to further flesh out the game. Other than that, the combat is simple but great, the characters look cool (the guys look badass, the chicks look hot) and it's very easy to pick up and play, but there's not much to master that you can't in about an hour. A remake should just make the combat deeper and add more content.

It's a real shame that there's not going to be more of it. It's such a great game with minor but noticable flaws that could've been ironed out in a PS2/PS3 entry. It's up there with Soul Calibur 2/3 as one of my favorite fighting games: specifically the type that are easy to pickup and play for a complete noob and probably make for good fun at parties.

Again, neat concept but nothing interesting is done with it because you're railroaded into who you need to be which amounts to "take over this person/animal/thing to open a door". Games using concepts like possession, swapping, shapeshifting, disguises, etc. as a core mechanic need to be like the recent Hitman games: they give you a big open area, you have goals you need to hit and thanks to your abilities you have a ton of ways to go about doing it.

PLEASE make a modern Bloodrayne oh please oh please oh PLEEASE.

The frantic pickup and drop guns mechanic, the blood drinking mechanic, it's such a fun game that is sort of undone by it's 2005 small team jank. If it just had a couple months more polish this game could be a massive gem.

Would kill for a remake that doesn't just make the game into a DMC or Bayonetta ripoff like the sequel tried to do.

Personally I still love it, but it's undeniably jank. Please also keep in the big boobs cheat code.

Any Bloodrayne sequel, remake or reboot needs to lean into that 2000s skankcore aesthetic and '90s/2000s bad girl action style. Don't run from it and make Rayne some Le Stronk Womyn, just make her what amounts to a stripper/Suicide Girl fighting I mean it probably won't be good but still, that's its identity.

Genuinely felt like the devs had zero notes from marketing and just ran wild with ideas. A remake that just polishes controls and keeps the irreverence intact would be pure gold. Black & White too, but only if they make the creature AI less of a masochist toddler.

Similar to Sacrifice: it's RPG in the sense that you control a wizard and you win experience and level up his stats then gather reagents to turn spells, and a third of all spells are summoning and you control the creatures you summon, however unlike Sacrifice the gameplay is top-down perspective so more pure RTS.

It also has a cool system in which to learn new spells you mix reagents with "slots" on your grimoire, each reagent can have a different spell depending on whether you insert into a Chaos, Neutral or Law slow, so that means a lot of decisions that'll make your wizard play completely different.

Plot is also cool, you travel across magical realms that are first not-druidic England, not-Ancient Greece and not-Arcturian England.

Sequel was terrible. IP is dead.

I'd love a new The Movies like game, one where the scenes, actors and actions actually matter.
It wouldn't be *that* hard to do. Give actions and scenes some tags, like "protagonist kisses girl", "villain dies", "calm scene", "antagonist is robot", etc. Props, backgrounds, etc. also have tags. Then have those tags decide how the film is received by audience and the press.
If it's a 1950s comedy and it has the tag "violent death" or "big dramatic argument", then it might not score that well. A horror film needs something spooky to happen, a wild west needs something thematic, etc.
Actors could gain tags based on their personal lives. If an actress is seen as a sex-symbol you might want her posing in risque clothes. If an actor is unpopular you might not want to put him in the heroic lead - but a villain role, where he loses, could be good.
And you could always try to break the trend. Make a comedy with a sad ending, make a wild west with monsters, etc.
Script writers could enhance certain tags based on their skills or add new ones to a scene, so the argument scene could be played as something funny, sad, violent, etc. New tech creates new tags. The popularity of tags change over time or suddenly because of real life events.
This would make the player actually think about the scenes they create and there would need to be some reason behind it. I liked The Movies, but after a while I just didn't care about the scenes I set up. It didn't matter, the success of the film was calculated elsewhere. It was a fun toy for many people but didn't have much to do with actual gameplay.

I will never not seethe that nobody tried to copy the magic system of this game.
Legitimately the coolest system I've ever seen in any game.

Not even just the drawing runes in real-time/order to cast spells, which feels WIZARD as fuck, but also the way spells are constructed. Like to make a fireball, you'd need three runes, 'Create' 'Fire' 'Projectile', whilst drawing 'Create' 'Fire' 'Area' conjures a fire wall.

It's so fucking cool and magical. Imagine what a modern developer could do with that system.

This is the great irony of remakes and remasters. Games that had potential to be incredible but were fucked up due to bad interference, lack of time and budget, or from a few unwise design decisions, or were simply overshadowed by gigantic franchises that released around the same time, are THE games that should be the prime candidates for being remade for a second chance. But because of how the markets work, 'flawed gems' are the last games to ever be chosen for this.

Specforce was a prequel, and was a lower budget expansion pack. There were plans for an actual sequel with a budget, and you can see posters for it in Dead Island. It's just perpetually "on hold" like Hellraid and whatever the fuck Warhound is. In reality, they're all dead just like all the racing games they used to make. Shame. It had potential with more polish.
Supposedly they're reviving Call of Juarez after completing the Beast, but it'll probably be just as unrelated to Call of Juarez as Gunslinger was, and the rumor I got this bit from also claimed they were dropping their in-house engine for UE5 for it.

My favorite part about the demo was that it would gradually introduce new mechanics and you could stop adding new mechanics whenever you wanted to. You could stop right after you got something profitable like taking passengers and you wouldn't have to deal with something that ate into your profits like taxes or paying the crew.

That's because character action games have game design that has conducive depth for the players to manage.
Third Person Shooters have tried creating intricate systems, and those that have complex mechanics with a variety of sub systems like Bulletstorm or RE6, failed in the market.

Shooters are forever doomed to be simplistic point and click sims because that's what the lowest common denominator wants.

This game's system mechanics are kind of genius, but the presentation is THE most generic a post-SF2 fighting game ever was, the sequel isn't very good, and nothing has ever truly copied it. I don't think it's bad but it's a little awkward. I wouldn't say it's really a hack and slash either, it's more an FPS but with melee. You lock onto enemies and can strafe around them, there's a leap over them you can do to come down with another attack, certain projectiles like rockets you can smack back at enemies. Also each character you can use has different skills that I think got rebalanced a bit in Shao (which is a third person remake). Like there's one character who's a young girl so she's slow and weak but she's afflicted with a virus that turns her skin to stone so she's a tank and invincible to projectiles. Stuff like that. It's kind of middling but I think it's worth playing.

Like I said, if you've played SMT1 and like that first half of the game just before the nukes fly where the whole world is a giant shitpile about to be pushed over a cliff, you'll like the atmosphere of Maken. It's the same sort of thing where the villain organization is basically pushing the the US and China into nuclear war by cotrolling both countries, there's a plague ravaging Europe, the EU have become Nazis, the big religious figure is a leading people in a suicide cult, etc. I like the game a lot if only for that. Also Meguro's music is really good and fits it, it's way different than his Persona stuff; much gloomier. He redid/remixed the music for Maken Shao and it's way inferior to the original X versions. Too poppy and closer to what he'd be doing once he took over the Persona series with P3.

Some of those titles were heralded by the press and the few that played them.
Out of all those games Alpha Centauri is the least niche with just about every Civ oldhead owning a copy.
Sacrifice was kind of a commercial flop and I got the bigbox from a bargain bin in like 05 and was pleasantly surprised.

I'd say the Settlers and Knights and Merchants games were and are interesting, but I've never liked them or how they play.

NFS High Stakes.
Specifically, the PC version's pursuit mode where you play as a cop. You have a team of 5 cop cars at your disposal, you can see their positions on the minimap, you can call others to act as wingmen or set up roadblocks or spike strips, you can jump into other cars and let AI take over the previous one and so on. There's nothing quite like it, usually playing as a cop means just you alone vs. racers, or at best you can magically summon some assistance down the road.

Yeah, I'm not intrinsically against UE5 in general, but I'm definitely against every developer, even holdouts that have used their very capable inhouse engines for decades, bailing to UE5.
It doesn't bother me too much, because I already experienced this back in the day with devs doing the same shit with UE3, but it disappoints me. I just hope it's a shitty rumor.

Techland already hid every game of theirs older than Gunslinger from their official portfolio website, and that's despite them buying out the rights of the entire Call of Juarez franchise from the original publishers, so who knows what they're about anymore.

>bullshit enemies like ghosts that are just tiresome, not scary
>numerous enemies have their tension ruined by incredibly silly sound effects like a stock jaguar sound and burping
The first half of the game is really good and the apartment has a lot of atmosphere, but it falls apart after that.

All of the other three games had tons of asset reuse and you just showed your ass of not playing them. SH1's final area is cut and paste and SH3 just uses 2's Silent Hill and hospital
Other two points are regurgitated reddit opinions

Sometimes I wonder how older pre-Underground NFS games played. For me and probably many other Underground was the first contact with the series. It and the following games sometime make me forget that NFS didn't started as a series primarily about illegal nightly street races of tuning cars.
