Blockbuster was great for dates back when I was in high school in the late 90s, picking up the gf, walking around together laughing at obscure movies and weird boxes, grabbing a pizza or burger, then going back to my room to "watch the movie" which really meant hardcore smooching and feeling her up. God those were the days.

We didn't have a Blockbuster in Covington WA, but we did have Hollywood Video, which was conveniently right next to a Papa Murphy's.
Yes, I painfully miss that ritual, and streaming just doesn't fill the void, but progress stops for no one I suppose.

considering the current state of streaming services (ad-free viewing being locked behind a more expensive subscription tier, variety of titles on a single platform nowadays being absolutely pathetic compared to early netflix, etc.), I'd gladly take rental stores compared to what we have nowadays. at the very least, going to a store and picking out a movie to watch feels infinitely more engaging than mindlessly scrolling through your subscription service(s) of choice to watch something halfway decent

Being a kid, being allowed to rent one video game a week to play while the parents pick out a movie, trying out all kinds of titles I might not have even looked at if I had to buy it full price and finding out it's actually amazing (maybe even fully buying a sequel with my very limited money)

So, instead, have a picture of when Reese's tried introducing "Christmas Trees." Probably 20 or 30 years ago? Eggs and Trees are the superior Reese's peanut butter cup since they were larger, had higher peanut butter to chocolate ration and I enjoy seasonal food more than regular.

When push came to shove, relatives who were down that rabbit hole still got vaxxed just to be safe and kept their distance. The lack of mask was silly, sure, but as long as they were keeping distance it was still something.

Nta but I have to agree, being a nerd was something to be ashamed of when I was in high school in the 90s. D&D, anime, that shit was for losers, and I was one of them. Most guys played video games, but it was sort of something you kept to yourself if you were anything resembling popular. The only game girls ever mentioned playing was Pokemon Snap on their brothers' N64s- girl gamers were basically non-existent. There were some girls into anime though, and they were fucking repugnant. I'm talking fat, greasy haired, bucktoothed types who wore dog collars, that kind of thing. Girls were universally terrible with computers, with the very rare exception (usually an MMO player).
It was only in the 2000s that the ship turned and "geek culture" became adopted by the masses.

I graduated high school in the 90s at a good sized school in a typical American suburb. It was every bit as kino as you can imagine...probably even moreso. It was exactly like the movie can't hardly wait. There was zero nerd culture. No one gave a shit or even knew about anime. There weren't closeted jocks or homecoming queens secretly playing nesticle or any of that shit. Everyone, even the dorks were out driving around and partying. There were no cell phones so people made their own entertainment in the real world with other people. The closest thing to nerd culture were groups like the one I hung out in who liked music like 311, Pearl Jam, Rhcp, tool, etc and were on the honor roll. God damn the world has gone to shit

I'm in my 40s, so I was an adult with a great deal of video game knowledge at that time. What this anon >>718740610 about there being no cool geeks is accurate, especially if you are from a rural area. You learn to hide your power level really quick, otherwise you're ostracized. I was bullied for knowing how to read in kindergarten, for example, and did not have friends until third grade when people found out I had participated in a martial arts tournament and got disqualified in the finals for punching the tournament guy's kid too hard (it made the paper, small town). That lasted about half a year until I forgot to hide my power level again. Then I started playing other sports and that was enough distraction to cause me from nerding out about various bullshit in school because if you play sports then you talk about sports. It consumes you in the same way whatever hobbies you had growing up consume you.

I saw the kids who didn't learn or were forced to hide their power levels subjected to worse fates. I ended up being rather popular, went to college, joined a frat, quit the frat after moving in with a football player, and whenever I would try to go hang out with the nerdy groups I couldn't stop myself from talking about football or basketball or somesuch and the reaction was the same as I got from the popular writ large back in elementary school. Nobody liked that sort of thing and I wasn't invited back out and I showed up it was made clear I wasn't welcome. So back to the normalfags I went.

There's a reason why every now and then you see people who are rather old posting on 4chan. It's not that we're here forever, it's just that we've got nowhere else to go. Everyone thinks they "belong" somewhere and if they aren't there yet then they'll find it someday, but some people know we don't.

It was not cool. It really, really wasn't. You don't talk about that shit in public if you know what's good for you.

There is a Halloween photo in my 2000 yearbook of, and I'm not even exaggerating, 20 girls dressed as Britney Spears from the Hit Me Baby One More Time video. That schoolgirl outfit with pigtails. Being a slut was what girls were focused on at the turn of the millennium. Showing up to school with Starbucks™ was cool. Wearing really low cut jeans and showing your whale tail. Definitely NOT nerd shit like video games or computers.

I felt something similar growing up, using today's lingo I was somewhere between a failed normie and an ascended robot. Gave up games and D&D and all that in high school, joined sports and a rock band and ended up with lots of friends and a great gf. Then I sort of lost my footing as an adult and fell back into these autistic habits. I'm trying to find my way again but as you mentioned, in a way there's nowhere to go. Everything is so desolate now, it's like the fabric of society completely fell apart when the 90s ended.

The discourse is going to be that it was cringe with some people replying that zoomies need to get out because (YOU)s is all that matter. Same old dance.

It was cool in the sense that less is more.
We have it better now but does not feel like it because much like porn, it is all so effortless and thus it is less rewarding.
Watching a nip slide in a movie or even 3 seconds of BOOBA required some work.
Finding the rare girl on girl scene on a cinemax presentation, if you could sneak and stay up THAT late, was incredibly satisfying.
Now I am one tab away from the most degenerate shit on the planet and it just feels meh.

Similarly I could order some snacks, download any game and movie of my choice or be even lazier and enter one of those malware ridden streaming sites hosted in russia with a VPN inside a virtual container with a free AV or a customized linux sandbox and have my fill of movies and anime, or be a paypig and actually pay for streaming if I am even lazier.
I could do this any day and any time.

So is not that it was all that great, it was the only way to access media and that was worth looking forward to.
You can make the discourse that maybe our dopamine receptors are fried and it is like fapping all the time.
We used to cum buckets when we first saw porn online, now vanilla stuff is like whatever.
Similarly we are a click away from any game or movie and we just don't care all that much because we take it for granted.

What does suck is that rental would be great for Nintendo games since that is the only pseudo-exclusivity left in the industry.
I feel Blockbuster was dead way before streaming, piracy is simply too rampant and easy. Streaming merely confirmed the time of death. Pity, loved the one that had a little living room to play vidya, even when it was rare to have a shot at it and even rarer to have time to play for more than a couple of minutes.

I wonder if the phenomenon that happened to CRTs will happen again to LCDs where I will have to keep my 720p monitor to enjoy old media.

When I was a teen I begged my parents to get a 1080i tv to replace the old CRT because newer consoles were allegedly going to be all HD (Xbox 360 and Ps3). Not only that CRT is now worth hundreds of dollars (sadly we threw it away because Teh Future) while that LCD is possibly worth about a $100 tops now used but no console game ever ran at 1080p natively, they were all upscaled from sub 720, Halo 3 was upscaled from some weird resolution.
Thinking about it, console games still don't support 1920x1080 natively and the industry is pushing 4K when even the series RTX5090 can't run games maxed out at 4K at more than 40 frames.

mine had two literally opposite sides of the street that kept competing with each other over who had a more appealing library or did better deals and cheaper rentals.
the one mogged the other so bad that it bought the shop next door and basically was twice the size and the other shut down. He rented out consoles (and a free game rental) for $25 a night with a $300 deposit in case you don't return it too which was pretty based. $50 for a weekend playing a new console+new game was pretty great. Of course it was a scam because after two months you've spent enough you could have just bought the thing yourself.

You probably were not alive before everything was in the palm of your hand.
>The domain google was registered on September 15, 1997
A lot of us had many years and an entire childhood before you could just look everything up.
You don't know shit about that entirely different lifestyle.
Old folks do look fondly on the days before smart phones.
I still remember the first kid bringing an ipod to school and we looked at it during art class. The touch wheel was revolutionary and was legitimately cool. No touch screen. Just a wheel.
>oooohhhh le Apple product you are such a corpo!
Sucks you don't have memories like that.
Things used to actually be cool instead of just retards memeing everything.
Going to school and talking to your friends instead of chatting online or over the internet is a completely different lifestyle that you missed out on.
Imagine you legit can't talk to your friends unless you are at school or physically hanging out together.
No we didn't randomly call each other to chat.
My friend had a pager and none of us had a cell phone until high school.
1-800-CALL-ATT was actually used back then. I had to use the pay phone at school to call my parents to pick me up if I stayed late playing with friends.
It's a completely different dynamic and every single social interaction was more valuable back then.
Sucks to be you.

When I was young I used to go here every other weekend with my dad, and we'd rent movies to watch together as a family. We'd buy caramel popcorn and Haagen Dazs ice cream in the little tubs that they used to have. I think he took me there to buy an Xbox 360 for my birthday too, or maybe it was Christmas eve. I can remember the layout of the shop and the carpets and everything. Man I just had a flashback to being like 8 years old.

Don't worry. Social stuff and what is "cool" goes in waves.
In a couple years it will be cool to reject AI and work-from-home and it will be cool to spend time out and about.
A lot of people already feel that way, but the majority or "mainstream" will reach that point eventually.
ChatGPT, for example, is already getting backlash and research is already proving it causes brainrot.
Have faith. Yes people are stupid, but a lot of them are not.
Especially kids watching their retard parents clinging to technology will definitely rebel against it.
Just give it time.
I have a gym membership and a bicycle and I play hockey.
Get some activities that force you around people and out of the house.
Every single time I play hockey, sitting on the bench we talk to each other. Even guys I've never met strike up conversation. I believe it's because we are in a good mood doing something we love. People like to chat.
Everyone's just a little shy, because we want to be liked.

Still fuck up constantly, but I know what I'm supposed to do. Just too depressed and bipolar to execute.
The amount of people in denial that they need to get sober is astronomical. I have some friends who I realized every single moment we spent together, we were getting fucked up. They still have a beer or wine every single time we go out to eat or do anything. Every single gathering has alcohol and most people drink it. It's sad, but they are functional so they think it's fine.

you know you can still go to a walmart and browse their DVD section if you really want a similar experience, right? but you don't do that, because it sucks. there's a reason redbox died and it's because nobody fucking wants to spend ten bucks to watch the best of a bad selection of movies when they could just go online and watch whatever they want.

first sale doctrine was already established before video games. when a physical exchange of goods is made, the rights to that specific good, copy of a game in this case, transfers to the purchaser. so you're free to sell it or rent it out or whatever.
that's a big reason why everything went to digital, it was argued that the rights never transfer from the original rights holder to the consumer since no physical exchange is made, and you're open to be eula fucked as hard as they like.

Born in 89. Got to see the NES in its prime, the SNES on launch, the Playstation, the N64, Dreamcast, GameCube, PS2, everything - I saw Source engine, rise and fall of G4, the death of GameSpy and web forums... I watched people use webcrawlers and unsecured government and corporate databases to use Korean Social Security numbers in order to sign up for MMORPGs in Korea so they could play the new content early.

It's not just rose tinted. Things were so unfathomably good. You got to see shit actually develop and advance in real time, you got to fantasize and learn and see the internet reach public homes. I was one of the first people with a website. It was a Kingdom Hearts website. It had a story summary and fanfic and sprites and a visitor counter that hit 309 before I lost interest. It might have gone higher before the service expired. I can't express how good it was. It was so self-driven and the large companies didn't exist yet. It was so perfect. So good.

You can't describe how great Fry's was to someone who never went. I was there when it was still Incredible Universe. I have such fond memories of going to Fry's, buying games or PC parts and then going to the local LAN center to play WoW or CS 1.6 or DotA.
Hell, I went from where I live to the Irvine Fry's for the WoW midnight release, pic related. Met the devs, got back home around 2:30 am and the guy who worked at the LAN center did a special opening for that night and let everyone smoke (all Asians except the token whites (us), and the place was Korean so everyone smoked) inside so nobody had to stop leveling.
Truly magical. It was inevitable places like big retail stores for things people would mostly buy online and places like Arcades and LAN centers would close, but I can still be nostalgic for them.

For kids here, I don't think the thing people miss about rental stores is actually having to drive out and return things, it was just the selection. Imagine if instead of having a NetFlix algorithm showing you whatever slop they overpaid to produce EXCLUSIVE for them, it was just a big random selection of genre-sorted shit. It was a great way to find stuff you'd otherwise never hear about in a time when you couldn't just google "WHAT'S THE HIDDEN GEMS".

It was the same with games and movies, I used to find so much wild shit in rental places that even today I doubt I'd ever just randomly stumble across.

I think it's something you could replicate today even with emulators, it would just take a lot of work and some discipline. Just find some game database, pick 20 random games from it and only look at their cover/back art, then commit to only playing that game for a week.

I guess it might be hard now though since everybody has at least passing knowledge of like 90% of games. Might still be neat though.

there's an algorithm for everything, social media feeds, online stores, food apps, advertisements.
with generative AI, i unironically think we're going to see todays kids go total autopilot for everything when they're adults, like an an llm just recording video and audio from people's phones or maybe smartglasses in the future, and just telling people where to go, what to say, what to do, everything. as though they're robots.

being a horny preteen sucked because if you EVER expressed that you had interest in looking at anything "sexy" then you were rapidly doomed for a savage humiliation by other kids and adults, possibly even getting beaten, even if it was at a social function where the sexy thing was currently present. You learned quick not to say anything or trust anyone, so every interest had the aura of perverse taboo that you kept secret from literally everyone, even your "best friends" who would more likely rat you out too. So you got used to thinking of life as a nonstop survival espionage mission, survive each day without anyone catching you looking at or saying anything. You become really good at stashing contraband in forgotten places and hoping no-one ever found out.
Kids these days with their internet anime girls and omnipresent sex memes everywhere don't know how great they have it.

It sounds better, but more convenient doesn't really equate to better. The paradox of choice boils down to "too much choice can lead to anxiety, regret and dissatisfaction" I think having a giant ROM collection can really emphasize this. A million games on hand, can't commit to any of them. Contrast that with waiting until Friday then renting one single game for the weekend- there's the anticipation of what to get, the activity of going to a physical location and browsing, then when you choose you don't feel any FOMO about other games because you are locked in, "married" to the game you chose and you go all in on it.
And then there's the dating aspect- Blockbuster used to be a great place to go on a date, it was a fun activity to take a girl and browse and choose something together. Much different than sitting on the sofa scrolling mindlessly through endless options, not quite happy with any of them because there might be something better if you keep scrolling.
Don't get me wrong, I love emulating games and think there has never been a better time to be a gamer than today simply because of the ease of access to the past via ROMs, but there was something really special and wholesome about going somewhere and picking something and being stuck with it and only it.

For a bunch of cunts that play on the nostalgia at a premium price you'd think they would throw a manual in as part of the bare min. Merchant level antics right.

The difference is you were intentionally renting your shit with a clear idea of how long you had before it had to be returned. Now you pay 70-80 dollars for something companies have the right to revoke your access to whenever they feel like. Rental stores had a lot of things you can criticize them for but you choose something fucking stupid on purpose.

Hollywood video/Game Crazy wagie here.

I lived this for a couple years. I don't miss any of it and i regret letting it be my life for so long. if i could go back i'd get out of hollywood as soon as GC opened up, get to middle management in GC and then fuck off somewhere else as soon as they started rotting.

having said that, sunday/monday evenings when i had finished stocking the trade ins, sorting everything and no one was coming in was very, very slow, so you basically fucked around on the demo consoles. I didn't have to buy a PS3 because every game i watned to try i beat at work, even shit like Last of Us and MGS4.

Hollywood was less free, but the cutest girls worked there, so it was nice eye candy, at least at my store. My boss wasn't a total ass, and the assisstant, while being a man hater, was kind of afraid of me because she was 300 pounds nad 5'5" and i'm 6'3".

People with late fees were trash, in every case.they didn't mark them late till 4 am, so unless you dropped them off after we closed, it was your fault for getting them.

Your video game store sounded like an awesome place to hang out. We used to have one but like 30 minutes from where I live. They sold a lot of older gen games. I remember when Xbox came out and I'd go to blockbuster to swipe 100+ 1 month live trial cards, back when they stacked, so I could play Xbox Live for free. Good times.
