Why is this game so schizophrenic?
>Noctis we need to get the Royal Arms to fight the empire!
>Actually fuck the Royal Arms let's just get the Espers
>Wait... let's go back to the Royal Arms for a bit even though we already ignored half of them
>WAIT NO FORGET THAT THE CRYSTAL WE NEED THE CRYSTAL

Well that’s what happens when you let develop linger for ten years, then fire the original director in favor of some butthole who thinks it should be able to be played by literal babies and then say β€œYou’ve got like a year to finish everything and ship it.”

So much shit left on the cutting room floor…

The game also made zero logical sense. The timeskip was poorly written, last minute, and honestly completely unnecessary. Luna never needed to be killed off, and it hardly mattered when she did because it happens so early in the game and you barely even see her before that point either.
And also the on rails driving wirh the basic car before they fixed it was annoying as fuck. I was also bothered by how on rails most of it felt. The landscapes LOOKED cool but you could barely explore anything that was actually good besides a few basic towns.

Bro the story right from the get go told you that the Empire stole the Crystal when they invaded and you had to get it back. The Royal arms are just a means to get you a stronger arsenal, and most are optional cause the whole point is for you the player to explore the world. As for the gods the Empire sought to control them so you had to fix that along the way.
>>719050772
You know you were supposed to get off the car at some point to explore right? If you got railroaded you were deliberately skipping seeing most of the open world. Chocobo riding was supposed to be your means of efficiently seeing the world without just following the road

The game ran like shit because it was built off the FF14 engine. It was unresponsive as fuck, there's a reason why they made you hold a fucking button to enter "dodge mode." The story being a clusterfuck was not even the main issue.

Yes the Crystal was always the end point from the beginning but the way to get there is extremely weird.
Again they introduce the Royal Arms as an overarching goal but they get discarded since half of them are optional, which only makes it more jarring when suddenly they go "wait we should go get this random one even though Ignis is severely debilitated now"
Then they tell you actually what we need are the summons but once again you don't get all of them, the characters don't even discuss Ifrit at all at any point prior to his boss battle, they just decide "ok time to make a run for the Crystal even though we've failed at everything we set out to do to make ourselves stronger"
It's also weird how the final battle still acts like you got every Royal Arm even if you didn't but whatever.

Why do open world games and terrible disconnected stories go hand in hand? It's not some kind of limitation of the game design, there's just this deliberate decision to have open world games consist of one minute long conversations in between minutes of travelling through nothing. The biggest flaw this game has in regards to difficulty is item storage. If you do enough quests and hunts you have enough money to always have 99 high potions in stocks at all times. Well in game once you beat it you can freely time travel back and forth between stages of the game, from a gameplay perspective it makes sense for the devs to leave the final multi cross slash attack in there cause at some point the player can go back in time per say and get the final Royal arms post game. I wouldn't call it discarded, it's just a more video games way to approach the situation, and for the story purposes that would always leave you canonically picking up your Father's Sword as the final Royal Arms.
Plus with the dungeon you referenced that dungeons purpose was to illustrate the trials Ignis would face but how he was willing to man up to his disability but continue pushing on anyway.
As for the Ifrit point they did acknowledge that critique and patched in a cutscene with Shiva explaining what's up with him

Anon, unlike most other hack directors, one thing I will credit Nomura for is that he is a GAMES director, and the reality is that if he couldn't make something achievable in game, he would scrap it and try something else. He doesn't direct movies, he wants to make actual gameplay. It also makes sense as to why Tabata said once he took the directors chair whatever was finished of Versus was like 20%, cause Nomura probably had to scrap shit again and again cause the engine couldn't handle it at the time, and when it finally did, he was off to do KH and FF7

I think the brief period where everything was trying to be multimedia was horrorendous, but I think FF15 takes the cake in what a cluster fuck it was. Prologue movie, anime shorts, books. You can write off the anime stuff, but the movie was crucial for understanding the world and the book contains what would have been the true ending to the game.
I can understand doing multimedia after the fact if the game was successful but they hurt the game by ripping out stuff that could have been in the game.
FF15 pisses me off to this day because I played it at launch and essentially got a early access version of something that was sold as a completed game.

See, I saw him in a perpetually extended mope. Even his excited points were so muted it felt like he just got socks for Christmas. His lack of investment, joy, or showing any love of life makes him really difficult to enjoy as a character. He has reasons to be miserable, but it's just one long daisy chain of bad shit happening to him; even then, he doesn't sink lower. He just remains fairly statically mopey. It's part of what makes Gladio's reaction to Noctis moping on the train strange - Noctis is barely out of his normal self, and Gladio starts railing on him for being too mopey and whiny.

Well even though most of the side quests in the game aren't good, the flavor text you get in each one shows Noct just being a good boy and helping people in need, like real typical Shonen hero stuff. You also have the specific bro quests where he just hangs out with Ignis Prompto and Gladio and are just having a good time. Plus with the specific dialogue he gets with fishing he really is just as dorky as Sora.

Ardyn started to get AIDS from healing too many people with spaceAIDS and it was getting to be time for the gods to choose a monarch so he went with his babe to some cool ruins to see the crystal(tm) because he was told he was gonna be king but it turned out it was a trap. Noctis Sr. Sr was lying in wait and killed his hot babe and when Ardyn approached to crystal to talk with Bahamut and be like "bro wtf" he was just like "i was just joshing lol u r basically destined 2 sit in tha cuck chair" and gave him super powers so he couldn't die and made him live a fucked up existence on some rock in the ocean for like 2,000 years then the nifelheim empire broke his ass out of ocean rock prison and he enacted his plan to get revenge on you for being his brother's shitty spawn and finally experience the sweet release of death in one swoop.

Like they can still have the Kingdom being invaded as a set piece for gameplay, but just using Car instead of the gang, you dont have to necessarily make it Noctis going through that. And to get a good ending you can just bring up how Death(whatever her name was in Versus) awakening after Ardyn fucked shit up and help Noctis find a true way to beat him.or some shit. Sakaguchi was still around, still at least editing these guys. I think Nomura and Kitase are both tismo geniuses who can't keep their bullshit in check, and Sakaguchi plays his stories too straight without them. Look at Lost Odyssey, which has side content with writing better than the actual overarching plot. They were a golden team, and it's a shame the Spirits Within destroyed Square.

I think you and many other people overestimate Nomura's role in the company. He has been there for a long time, but he has never been given a board seat, and has only ever been a Director for KH, FF7R and Versus. KH is pretty much quarantined from the rest of SE thanks to Disney's weirdness, and we know what happened with Versus.

We also know he said he was unaware of being the Director of FF7R until just before it was publicly announced and he was essentially put there with no choice. He has given many ideas for stories and scenarios, but is rarely ever credited for writing or planning, 99% of his tenure at Square he has been officially just a character designer.

He obviously does not have the authority to choose his own projects, since he would have never pulled himself off his dream game, or given himself the Director seat of 7R by surprise, so it's unfair to assume he just "chose" to do KH spinoffs for years instead of KH3, or that he "chose" to not do this or that. He officially is only an employee who answers to many other people, and any office politics he may or may not have is blind speculation.

Yes I did leave the car and even used the chocobo and the offroad version of the car. The game still felt railroaded. Most of the map is linear and the big open areas are only near beginning and early middle of the game. Even then, you'd often see sections of the world that had super terrible paths, like entire sections of the game world that were fenced off in inconvenient areas with few ways to get around them. They were very common around the highways and roads in the game. Not a lot of big side dungeons either which bothered me.

Granted some of the game exploration aspect is supposedly easier in the Royal edition with the flying car or something but I never tried the game with that since I played it before that ever released.

Not to belabor the point but Versus was made as a deliberate reaction against the interactive movie style of gameplay Sakaguchi, Toriyama and Kitase made. He said that recent FF games didn't explore games as virtual worlds and character studies. When I found out that it became apparent Nomura hired people who didn't work for Kitase and Toriyama's respective teams too closely, this only showed that Nomura made Versus to stand against normal 13. And he didn't just not hire people who worked on 7-8-10-13, he hired people who broke off to work on Tactics or FF12 or projects involving Yasumi Matsuno, or more commonly Kazutoyo Maehiro. This was especially true when he got all those staff members who worked on The Last Remnant to work on Versus, then Nomura brought more staff from Akitoshi Kawazu to make his game with him. All three developers were also known for not using the cutscene-battle-move forward game design loop Nomura spent his time in. This began with Masato Yagi and Jun Akiyama who didn't work on FF10 or the 13 series.

Make Stella the love interest of Nocts dad and have small glimpses of all the bullshit his father had to go through. As much as people whine about not getting the OG Noct no one cares about OG Nocts dad, fuck around with him for a bit and have him get into shit that leads to the events of the first game. Bringing in the God of Death, have her not be involved through the main story cause she feels a gods role isnt to be involved in earthly matters anymore, she finds out the bullshit that Bahamut gets to and gets pissed, and helps adult Noctis. You're correct. In fact, Nomura had his KH2 devs taken away from him to work on 13, 14 1.0, then 13-2 and 14 ARR at the same time. In 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012 he only had 3 to 6 months in Tokyo each year but Komoto and Toriyama needed people each year. All he could do was make spinoffs in Osaka to make the wait for KH3 less heavy and by the time 2012 rolled around it was clear that he wasn't a priority to the company, which is why they removed him.

And yet they were the very first team to create game design in fully 3D environments. Not 3D rendered hallways like FFX or isometric like in Vagrant Story (though Nomura definitely looked to that one). He could've joined his teachers who said that 3D maps were the way to go but they were in a mess of their own so.

How is this different from the DLC that was already released for XV? It added tons of story in the MIDDLE of the game, new cutscenes that changed the context of the story, etc. The final DLC was supposed to be a completely different ending as well, which had to be released as a book instead.

Magic sucks ass for Noct but the way Ignis implements it in his combat is nice, you can cycle through buddies for combat but you have to unlock them in the skill tree(doesnt cost much AP), they buffed Noct in the shitty hallway section and you can also cycle between that shitty section to the Ignis and Gladio section during rest points, and you get the Regalia Type D which is the free roam car, plus general tweaks.
Id say those free improvements makes the game a solid 8/10, I bought the royal edition recently after selling my old copy but most of my 150+ trek of the game was fucking around in the base game, the DLC's were fun too but not part of that 150+ run, Im not including that. The only thing you miss out on that you need to pay for is the expanded Insomnia map for the final dungeon assuming your first purchase was the launch PS4 game and not the Royal or Windows Edition, but I'd still give the base game an 8/10 with the free improvements

Xv should have been 3 games: first game is about road tripping with the bros collecting the royal arms + altissia and the fialed wedding. Second game should have been smaller contained open zones where you are on the run from the empire, you meet allies and basically go from road tripping simulator to rebellion simulator. Game takes place in the train continent, tenebrae and the empire continent. Aranea joins the group. It would be a more linear game. By the time you get to the Capital of the empire, you are actually fighting with them to protect civilians. You need to get to the cristal to figure out what's wrong. Cristal absorbs noctis and the game ends.
Thrid game should have been the time skip, you need to road trip back home but the trip is brutal. You revisit known locations, defeat monsters, and make it back to the capital. Demon Hunter Iris joins the group.

Gameplay wise, I think only Noctis should be playable. Get rid of the automatic dodge, give ennemies better telegraphing, and allow to use more than one attack for the other characters. Instead of having a fixed moveset per weapon type, each weapon should be heavily expanded upon, with much expanded moveset like Nioh. Weapon switching should be encouraged, by having different attacks play when you switch from one weapon type to the other. The idea is to have the player make his own moveset, maybe not to the level of godhand since weapons still have a default attack string, but somewhere close. In terms of inputs, each action buton would be mapped to a weapon, you dodge with L2, you issue commands by holding R2 and using the d-pad, you warp strike L1 and you jump with R1. Then you add special attacks that use royal arms and that you can only use with a meter.

Thats why its pissing me off even more that the game got fucked over to hard by its developement hell it went through. Im pretty fucking sure it could have been one of the best FF games if it actually turned out like they originally planned to. What also pisses me off is how HARD they fumbled Ardyn. Dude has a really interesting backstory and nothing of it ended up in the maingame. He is easily one of the best FF villains if it ACTUALLY WOULD BE PART OF THE FUCKING GAME. But no, instead to learn about him you have to play his DLC and read a wall of text on WIkipedia. In the maingame he just was kinda there and you had to fight him at the end. Wow. Why would anyone care about him when he had like 5 minutes of screentime. Its crazy how much potential they threw out of the window. The problem with the game is that it's two visions conflicting with each other.
Tabata clearly wanted to make the road trip game where you drive around a bunch of vaguely America countryside-esque locales doing tourist-like activities, which is commendable and a fun enough part of the game, but because they were making this on top of Versus XIII's corpse they also had to incorporate a lot of the grandiose shit that game promised in its marketing and the two really conflict with each other.
The road trip aspect is cool but severely lacking in any kind of stakes or narrative momentum, fighting Titan is really the only big narrative moment you get in the first 20 or so odd hours of play, otherwise you're limited to hunting down frogs, fishing and collecting some dog tags on the ground, maybe once in a while you might get a fun hunt to do but Behemoth is basically the only time one of these isn't just hurdling towards a waypoint marked on your map where you fight a generic monster.
Meanwhile once you're in Altissia and subsequently on the train and the game starts trying to deliver on the Versus XIII bullshots it's clear that they didn't have the resources to fully commit to that kind of setpiece heavy design, likely due to having to develop the open world so much, so they all come off as half-hearted and just stacked on top of each other with no meaningful downtime or build up between them.
There's like two good games buried here, one where you explore a slowly expanding open world over the course of the entire story with appropriate peaks and valleys in the gameplay and narrative, focusing on the relationship of the party as they're put in wacky fantasy scenarios, and one that's a more linear affair more focused on big setpiece moments and a heady political story about Noctis's ascension to the throne.

Why do you think the time jannies were a thing in that? Ever since he was booted out, Nomura has been pretty angry at the franchise and has been acting his revenge by his own admission:
>mentions in interviews that he's channeling his anger into his work with no elaboration
>keeps finding excuses to not finish in time artwork for Dissidia NT and skips its streams, painting an aura of doom that won't help the game's popularity
>doesn't include FF characters in KHIII at launch and makes up poor excuses to justify that, has to capitulate for the DLC
>possibly suggested the canning of the DLCs for XV so the Luminous studio could work on something else (which we know turned out of to be Forespoken, which killed the team and had its members being absorbed into the VIIR ones), Tabata quitting being a response to that
>makes the narrative in VII Remake overly convoluted with implications and makes a caricature of entitled fans of the original game that need to be defeated for the characters to experience freedom
>personally suggests the character of Kubo for NEO TWEWY and makes him a caricature of Tabata with a story arc that parallels what happened to VXIII/XV and how Nomura percieved it happened
>creates Stranger of Paradise, a story that behind the fun insanity of Jack is meant to erode the mythos of the franchise in almost all its aspects
>raises no objection to give carte blanche to YoshiP in turning the next mainline chapter, XVI, into a Snoy cinematic actionfest with very little RPG elements

I am dead convinced Nomura hates Final Fantasy deeply at this point and his statement of retiring is because he wants the ship to sink badly.

That’s not the only thing that feels like the game was ducttaped together. Even the art direction feels like it was made by different people. For example, Insomnia was supposed to be based on Tokyo and has modern cars and buildings, but outside the city, it looks like a completely different country stuck in the Western ’90s. No one uses modern cars or smartphones, and even the currency is different. How does that make any sense from a real world logic perspective?

>TL;DR for Stellafag Writeup, Side Green (Part 1)
>The green image AKA Stellafag writeup Part 1 (picrel) talks about the events in Square Enix that caused Versus XIII to turn into XV. Crystal Tools and mismanagement turned XIII and XIV raging dumpster fires that almost killed the company under Wada, forcing the Versus team to be split across any and all Crystal Tools games to make development easier.

>It mentions the Crystal Tools graphics engine and how it affected development. It also talks about how trying to get mass-market appeal affected gameplay (changing from a more complex KH2 like battle system to the simpler one we see in FFXV).

>Nomura's team was constantly taken away to finish XIII, then XIV and then help again with ARR. His game was never in constant development like some morons think it was, because more than half of the time he didnt even have a team. With no team or deadline he thought of new ideas like any director would in that time to keep the ball rolling. Square restructured like 3 times during that period and in an effort to fast track production; they told Nomura to start working on both Kingdom hearts 3 and FF7 Remake. All the production work done thus far was given to Tabata with Nomura overseeing the transfer. Tabata who unfortunately was a layman of a director and a mediocre one at that.

>Tokyo Team anon's comments
>I'm surprised Stellafag didn't pick up on this but other KH2FM/Versus team devs worked on XIV or under Yoshi P during Endwalker apart from Ohdachi and how many other KH2FM devs that weren't former FFXI team members also worked on Parasite Eve 2 when all of them were known as Square's Osaka Team. >TL;DR for Stellafag Writeup, Side Black (Part 2)
>The black image AKA Stellafag writeup Part 2 talks about why changes were made to pander/appeal to the Western (North US American) market and how they ensured success and the longevity of the FF brand along with how Nomura felt about these changes.

>Nomura was incredibly pissed that the original, dark and chuuni as fuck Versus 13 was dumped for making a product with mass market appeal thanks to changing sensibilities in the western market, as such, he included links to the corporate politics that led to it in Kingdom Hearts 3 via Verum Rex, an in-universe video game. Stellafag speculates the next game will be Verum Rex and it'll be a retelling of how the internal corporate politics of square that led to the downfall of his baby (Versus).

>Stellafag says that Versus was decringed into 15 to save the Final Fantasy brand at the cost of removing everything Nomura wanted to put in it in terms of story and gameplay like Kingdom Hearts combat and all the dark shit you saw in 2000s anime which became cringe in 2010 so it could sell outside of Japan and save the Final Fantasy brand. It made Japanese games semi okay because it saved Square financially but Forspoken is now the fruit of Nomura's pain and suffering.

>13 turned off a lot of consumers, it was expected to be a BIG success and a lot of money went into the trilogy. Nomura wanted Versus to be a more "serious" story about contemporary modern day problems [compare: 12, Vagrant Story, 14, 16, Code Geass, Gundam, Death Note] but SE felt this was too risky, would cut out certain markets like China and risk being another failure. XV was made readily appealing to FFags and fans in general and overall separated itself from 13. But sales weren't good enough and consumers didn't stick around while long time fans felt the game was lacking. Elements of Versus got recycled into KH3 and Nomura took cancellation of the project hard.

>What is fact and what is fiction? (Assorted side comments)
>Stellafag is trying to explain why Versus XIII was changed to FFXV. They believe it was to get more widespread appeal, especially from western gamers that were used to playing games with easy to digest writing. They also talk about how Nomura being taken off of Versus XIII is similar to Takahashi and Saga being taken off of Xenosaga 2.

>Was the Xenosaga/Xenogears comparison a necessary part of it anon?
>I think it helps to make a comparison to another creator being taken off a project they've put a lot of time and thought into. Personally I think he Nomura took the situation too seriously. It's certainly hard when something you're passionate about gets taken away from you, but this is an industry geared towards selling products primarily. And unless you're the boss you don't get to decide what the company sells.

>There was one guy named [GameFAQs user] Yuriev/AC [who] wrote the famous Xenosaga/Xenogears Study Guide (Blogspot archive) that (noted Xeno fan) Stellafag pretty obviously [took] inspiration from. That said Yuriev was set to throw Soraya Saga under the bus when she and Takahashi got the boot for how she reacted after Xenosaga got Tabata'd. That's probably why Stellafag just won't shame Tabata for what he did when Nomura and his vision for Versus XIII was dropped for XV.

>In the earlier days of Kingdom Hearts Nomura was actually able to deliver a vision based on those trailers. Even birth by sleep tied things together as well. Whatever you think of Nomura's ideas and execution, it's only FFXV that turned into some one dimensional dull crap about kings with a completely botched aesthetic. [Because FFXIII made anime plotlines cringe and in the case of XIV, gameplay in Japanese games was rejected]

More on Nomura and Xeno (pic related)
>Xenogears Perfect Works is to Takahashi and Soraya as Versus XIII is to their eldest son (loljk but you all know what I mean) Nomura. Takahashi said Xenoblade 2 was supposed to show "if you just change your thinking a bit, there's such a colorful world out there." This was to his kids, I'm sure, but I also wonder if he was also trying to cheer up his eldest son after his Square mismanagement took away his project (kek). People theorize this is why Verum Rex exists in KH3.

>The Xenogears and Xenosaga comparison exists in Stellafag Writeup, Side Black because Tetsuya Takahashi and Soraya Saga are the most similar to Tetsuya Nomura in style among other former and current Square developers. Takahashi and Soraya are themselves two of Nomura's closest friends which is why Nomura said yes to working on Xenoblade 2. ... and Stellafag using it helps us understand what Nomura felt when he was taken off the project.

>Takahashi had the lowest self-esteem of his life and Soraya lapsed into suicide ideations that started with an unrelated incident after online harassment [faulted] her for being fired from her project along with her husband, one they co-created. Nomura was depressed enough to buy 2 cats after he was removed from Versus 13 but he was still furious enough for his anger to explode when Square made him change engines for KH3's development from Luminous to Unreal Engine 4.

>Years have gone by, and you're right anon they're a lot happier now. In fact Takahashi seems to have done some self-reflection on his part. I don't have the specifics down since I never played it but he uses the Zohar and various reflections on creating virtual worlds as the Architect in the ending of Xenoblade 2. It's likely Nomura played Xenoblade 2 and then was so moved by the ending the Versus Epic came back within him or maybe Takahashi was speaking to Nomura through the game since he knows exactly what his fellow Tetsuya felt.

Context of the bigger picture: the world of TWEWY (which is strongly implied to be part of the KH universe) is ruled by higher beings refered to as Angels, who use lesser higher being called Reapers to enact battle royale-style games on the planet for the sake of scientific study (for their prospective, things like death of a being is just data being transferred from one plane of existence to another like in a computer; if this plot point sounds familiar, the Lufenians from SoP are loosely inspired by this). Humans with sufficient determination and ambition can become Reapers and even Angels on the long run, but it's not an easy process.
Worth noting also that the higher beings normally don't give a shit about humanity at all, viewing them like microbes for their testings.
By the time of NEO the Angels due to shenanigans have employed one of their kind, Kubo, to erase a portion of Tokyo, Shinjuku. Kubo decided to do so by infiltrating the local Reaper group with a cover, Grima Wormtongues his way into them and convince them to fuck everything. (1/2)

No, it wouldn't, so stop being a retard that complains about shit that doesn't matter.

Since that apparently was successful enough, the Angels send him to do the same to Shibuya, which in fact hijacks the existing local Reaper game; since he has more carte blanche, Kubo turns the thing into a complete mess and by the end of the game, both the protagonists and the Reapers team-up to beat his ass. However, they can't do jack and just when it looks like Kubo has achieved complete victory, the higher beings decide he overstepped things and erase him completely from existence before he can finish his work, with the protagonists having to clean his mess afterward.
While in broad strokes, the parallels can be easily seen with Tabata working on Before Crisis, Crisis Core, The 3rd Birhday and Type-0, being assigned to VXIII turning it into XV, the original dev believing it's a distortion of the original intent but unable to stop him, and his sudden stop and departure from Square before the DLCs of XV could be finished because the higher ups got tired of him. More context:
>What is Nomura's endgame?
>There is an effort by Square to forget that XV under Tabata ever existed.

>Tabata already gave FF the status it used to have in America so he pretty much did what the suits asked him to do even if Tokyo Team anon is furious they made the writing MCU tier. This allowed Nomura to come back onto the spotlight with 7R even if it was essentially assigned to him against his will.

>But moment they found out XV's momentum was flagging and Project Athia wounded profits in 2018, they kicked him out. Considering that new fans kept associating Tabata with XV since 2016, they probably thought it would be in bad taste to let it continue so they cut him off and dropped him just before Episode Ardyn. They're probably only letting Forspoken out on the open world so Luminous Productions wipes their hands off the project that Tabata kept on talking about for years after XV's release.

>At the same time though everyone suddenly asked Square Enix about Versus in those surveys and Nomura suddenly added the Verum Rex trailer in KH3. With him suddenly leading multiple projects in supervisory positions and even getting promoted internally things seem to be looking up for him, and in the FF11 interview between Nomura and the producer that got released today no mention of XV is made in any form whatsoever even if he was credited as creator.

>Forspoken looks underwhelming, I'm surprised that S-E didn't cancel it. Unless they're trying to recoup the costs that were spent on Luminous engine and the formation of Luminous productions.

>I think that's exactly what they're doing. It's squarely aimed at the XV demographic, but unfortunately the entire reason why Forspoken exists is the same reason why NEO TWEWY and 7R didn't do as well as Square Enix expected: because serious anime plots with lots of meaning and good and substantiated political commentary is cringe, and vidya like MCU movies exist for spectacles and nothing else.

>What is Nomura's endgame? (Part 2)
>I thought about something similar before. Assigning a mobile/handheld developer on a AAA project with already troubled development was retarded. But having Tabata be a scapegoat for it's failure totally makes sense.

>It's just weird to me Tabata went into FFXV with the mindset "even if we fail it's OK" when he started changing it into a Westernized open world kusoge as if it's some indie project he's experimenting with. There is also that insane marketing campaign that practically shoved FFXV down everyone's throats. S-E is run by a bunch of monkeys.

>Did you hear about the theory with the legacy of Tabata's XV being actively covered up?
>I mean, Tabata left SE and took some people with him. I would be surprised if anyone would want to defend his legacy as the opportunity he got to direct a mainline FF game was a huge honor. That he would just leave and take some talented people with him no doubt hurt SE, even if it was an amicable parting. I personally don't believe that he was fired, but I do think that the way the FFXV DLC was canned after he left meant SE was ditching whatever direction Tabata was taking his team and sending it in another. And with Nomura a more powerful force at SE, I'm sure he'll be very happy to help everyone forget about that time so he can redo things the way he always wanted to.

His redemption arc in the novel was great too. He taunts Noctis to fight him and Noctis was like Yeah, fuck you and your revenge scheme, I’ve got Luna and the world to save. I’ll deal with you later. Ardyn was inspired by Noctis trying to defy his fate, which reflected his own actions after waking from slumber solely for revenge. But the kid only spent 10 years becoming the True King. That caused Ardyn to have a change of heart, and he borrowed the Lucis ring to go help kill Bahamut inside the crystal. The entire scene was great. it’s a shame they didn’t make it to the game.

Addendum fro a behind the scenes: as mentioned, Kubo was personally suggested by Nomura himself (remember, the TWEWY games are more Kando's territory) because he felt the story of NEO had a cast of completely sympathetic villains and he wanted to add someone which was a complete bastard with no redeeming qualities whatsoever (and if you pay attention, you can virtually remove Kubo from the story and it would only require very minimal rework of some plot elements in order to work out). >Because people want the opposite of what he makes. They want simple handholdy stories with simple handholdy combat systems. The Tokyo Team battle system was scrapped to praise from Tabata, journalists and zoomers alike. And the original Nomura-authored political conflict was taken out and 15 was successful because it was 'made less anime'. SoP and Days were shat on for making people experience negative emotions and drama that got in the way of their gameplay.
>Note: You can argue that 16 still hasn't captured the elusive American/European mainstream market for this reason (aka breaking 5 mil like 15 did). This market calls the above KH nonsense.

>Edgy and dark still really isn't cool enough for the mainstream. Even Zelda has too much plot for people who don't play Japanese games. Square will do anything to become as big as Ubisoft even if they shouldn't.

>Square Enix will relocate its main offic to a new building currently under construction in the East Side Square of Tokyo's Shinjuku ward. Construction is expected to be completed in April.

>Nikkei BP says the Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest developer/publisher will move from its current headquarters in another part of Shinjuku to the new building some time in summer.

>Square Enix was previously based in Tokyo's Meguro ward, but the company moved to Shinjuku in 2004. Famed composer and former employee Nobuo Uematsu previously claimed the move was spurred by a fortune teller's prediction.

>"[Square Enix CEO and president Yoichi] Wada took a couple of locations to a fortune teller named Pao," said Uematsu. "Pao said the Meguro space was not going to bring any fortune to the company, and pointed to Shinjuku. That's why he decided to move it there. I heard this directly from Wada."

>Reminder that XVI also features an emperor who is himself ruled entirely by fortune tellers. Ask an old Square Enix employee (Matsuno, Maehiro, Minagawa, Kujiraoka, literally any veteran FF employee) and they will know what Yoshi-P meant by that.

>Nomura knows this too.

>There are theories that Nomura is making use of a power vacuum at Square ever since the 2 CEOs + Tabata left. Koichi Ishii [of Mana] told him to cement or maintain SquareSOFT's old culture for new devs before he put up Grezzo.
>That's why Nomura stayed.

>Nomura has big plans for Square in and out of KH. He plans to take control of it and make it a safe haven for younger devs like what he did with KH1, Dissidia, TWEWY and Versus each time. Even the 7R games are him just sending design documents his apprentices to work on.
>This happened with Kingdom Hearts, this happened with Dissidia, this happened with Versus and to an extent the Osaka Team is this too.
>What he needs to do is to get his old KH team members stuck in CS1 that only recently got senior positions (Mitsunori Takahashi and co), move them to CS3, rehire Yuichi Kanemori and make Versus under Yoshi-P, Maehiro and Nojima clashing in the writers room for another trilogy.

I don't want to add to your pasta but I have no choice so do what you want with this but Ishii was in the exact same position Nomura was in for VII and VIII when he worked on I. He led the initial game design, basic story concepts, almost all the background graphic design and even helped Kazuko Shibuya out with the character graphic design before Amano. He was essentially doing everything while Sakaguchi was finishing his last projects using his design documents. He knows what it's like. >What is Nomura's endgame? (Part 3)
>He's definitely fantastic at what he's good at, but I'd like to think by now he also recognizes both his shortcomings and the particular strengths the company has. From the things already said and done with how he's gotten the right writers and developers for the right projects and those comments about him trying to pull together a particular team, that very much seems like the case, and even reminds me of a certain recent SE protagonist with a knack for leadership. (This is Kanade Rindo from NEO The World Ends With You (TWEWY)).

>The comments about how [Nomura is] trying to reform Tokyo Team (more on that later) as well as aiding on all these different projects not by managing them himself but by finding and placing the most talented people for them in that position and assisting them in getting to that path is not unlike the leadership style Rindo shows especially at the end of the game, where his awareness and understanding of the qualities and relations of each and every one of his allies and the capacity to connect them is what allows him to put in motion the plan that ultimately reawakens the city.

>There's likely more parallels to draw from, after all the game prominently features people from Shinjuku encroaching upon Shibuya but settling their differences, and even Rindo himself from the start of the game is very adverse to taking responsibility and putting himself out there to make decisions out of choice paralysis and the fear of what could happen, instead just drifting along and passing on details that could be crucial.

>After all, imagine you got the chance at a project that could be everything you want to make and have it taken from you due to all kinds of circumstances, while your other prized project is subject to all kinds of corporate meddling.

The Eikons are the established gods of the world whose machinations stem from and mutually empower the crystal, which in turn empowers the Royal Arms/Ring which in turn empowers the vassals of the King and his City. It's a system of power distribution that's thoroughly explained in the game and the movie. It is similarly implied by the issue of the Starscourge that the Crystal as a primordial empowerment entity also derives its fundamental power from access to sunlight, or alternatively that it produces sunlight in itself and that the engulfing bacterial/nanomachine nature of the scourge is choking its ability to distribute even light.

The real issue with the game is the way that it's so desperately tied to an ancient mythology type determinism where said gods (especially Bahamut) have built an inescapable trap for their human vassals, capturing the royal family members and their vassals in turn within a long foreseen tragedy. It's not bad per se, but it isn't especially fulfilling to a modern audience that prefers to believe in personal determination and free will.

You're a dumbfuck contrarian. People first made fun of Zack getting fucked like a bitch, then comes Reunion fixing that scene and gives him a proper send-off, but now it's "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO YOU CAN'T HAVE A LITERAL BIO-MODIFIED SUPERSOLDIER FIGHT AN ARMY OF GRUNTS!!! IT'S NO LONGER LE SOMBER AND FUNNY!!!".
Fuck off, you'd complain no matter what they did in that scene.

Very hard. It's gay coded, every character is a faggot. Noctis gives up his boipucci to all of them, playing around as he pleased, which is why they got so mad at him, at different points. I swear, you homosexuals are blind to obvious innuendo.

Because this game was clearly rushed and unfished. They just wanted to ship it at all cost after being in development for 10 years and development restarted from scratch like 3 times and even changing staff and director. Not to mention out of those 10 years the game we got was actually made in like 2-3 years. Like the world of this game is fucking empty. There are only like 2 small town in total, the dungeons are all dull and dark with nothing in them but walls and maze-like level design.

How the fuck this game has an 80+ Metascore? I have no idea.
How the fuck reviews on Steam are mostly positive? I have no idea.
This game is a complete trainwreck, a wasted decent soundtrack just like FF13, combat is fucking trash too. Yet this garbage is one of the best selling FF games to date and the one game in the franchise most young people have played.

Nomura failed to make Versus XIII, so Square Enix forced Tabata to piece together Nomura's failed abortion, and the result is XV, a game that was cobbled together with the kitchen scraps of a Versus XIII that Nomura spent 7 years pretending like he was making just so that it looked like he was busy.

A disaster all around, really.

>im not defending nomura, but tabata is still a shit director.
I agree that Nomura is a character designer, not a director, and that Tabata is not that great either.

>taro managed to make a memorable complete and satisfying game with a fraction of the budget
That's because Yoko Taro is an insane genius with great artistic vision. He is what Nomura wishes he was. Really, Nomura wishes that he was either Yoko Taro or Hideo Kojima, or perhaps a combination of both. Instead, Nomura is a little kid completely out of his depth trying to play with the big boys, faking it until he makes it, and he already made it somehow but he's still faking it because he never truly learned.

Tabata *had* to repurpose Nomura's failed abortion. He had to take scraps of something he didn't give a shit about and find a way to piece it together using his own idea. It could have turned out better, but it was by all public accounts financially successful, so even though you and I think he failed, objectively, on paper, he did not. There's also Type-0, which is easily the best FNC game, though I disliked XIII enough that I didn't play XIII-2 or LR, so maybe one of those is technically the best FNC game, but of the base FNC games, Tabata's other game, the one he actually got to make himself, Type-0, is easily the best one.

Eh Tabata clearly has some good ideas as a director that are very effective.
Prompto's photography is a huge homerun for the game and carries a lot of its emotional weight by itself.
I'd also say the second half, while a bit scattershot, is also a great display of his directorial prowess.
The train sequences feel appropriately claustrophobic and aimless and I love the sequence where you have to babysit blind Ignis around and he can't even cook food properly at camp anymore.

cyberconnect2 really fucked this whole game, SE needed to rebuild a whole new engine after CC2 royal fuckup, SE ends up blowing all the good beginning story in a movie to keep hype up, game ends up mid cut into pieces for scrap or dlc
they want to get more $ back from custom engine and create Forspoken, which flopped for the same reasons; no real story
