Training is a lot of risk management, try to think a few turns in advance and consider if your deck has some energy+ events (like Teio or Biko) so you have can have outs if your failure rate will be above 20% after a turn. Know the fixed events that give you mood up and energy and play around them, like grabbing free lone wolf from Tosho if you know you have one coming up. Plan ahead for your races since the amount of energy you use is also fixed, you can also gamble on the bottom option after the race if it gives you a better break point for energy.

For example, if you're at around 60% energy with only a single rainbow on a 4 speed deck, you might choose to race to drop to 50%~ hoping for a better rainbow next turn instead of dropping down much more and risking not being able to train on a good rainbow or taking a big gamble.

I will generally hit recreation if I get two mood downs back to back.

I haven't watched the event yet and I don't know anything about their game careers, but in the anime Kitasan is pretty boring but Dia has a somewhat interesting, if not short, arc. In the anime the Satono family is said to be cursed and unable to win a G1. She repeatedly gets close to winning but she always comes short due to things like a broken horseshoe or another uma running into her. I liked that her drive to break the curse isn't just the typical "for the honor of my family" but also because she wants to give hope to the younger members of the family who feel discouraged.

Kitasan just has a generic "I want to make everyone smile and watch me" motivation that she had to rediscover every three or four episodes. And it puts a lot of emphasis on her losses rather than her wins. Whatever her game career is, I'm sure it must be better.

Mihoyo games for example are forgiving if you just want a new character every few releases because pity is low. But the odds are so low that basically every time you plan to roll, you'll likely go to pity. Uma conversely has higher pity but also better rates.

Personally I just play FGO and just use the fact the NA server is 2 years behind to be able to plan way ahead and basically not have to worry despite its pity system being dogshit insanely high and every other game I just YOLO roll whenever I want. Also never listen to metafags in gacha either.
