Anonymous No.720592651 [Report]
Silksong isn't even that hard... the bosses only have like 3 attacks each with clear openings. Other games like Elden Ring are so much harder because the bosses barely give you an opening

I've already finished the game and it was kino. I'm a better player and my takes are more valid than any reviewer's. Journos are mentally handicapped without exception. They don't even like video games. They just flunked out of everything else in life and settled for writing about something they hate.

The pantheon is hard solely because you have to beat every boss in the game in a row. That's the only challenge. Individually, the bosses are piss easy. The great filter is the 40 minutes it takes to do each attempt.

they didnt finish the story, and were perfectly fine with zanzibart slop, and they got bored of metroid halfway through the game and decided to make a meat boy souls clone instead

the number of minibosses in HK2 that are just tiresome rehashes of their add heavy boss rush dlc, which itself was already garbage, makes it clear that they're just making more of the same

I gave it a 7.5
It feels way overbaked, it should have come out years ago. You can see in trailers areas six years back that look the exact same as release. The difficulty is many degrees higher than the original game which is very unapproachable to newcomers. Lots of challenges aren't designed to be hard but rather just punishing as if the game's intention from a design standpoint is to compel players to stop playing. If you fully completed Hollow Knight and are craving a challenge then it's borderline perfect for you but most people should avoid Silksong.

A 7.5 sounds about right. Some of the boss fights are great but Silksong feels like it fails as a metroidvania. Secrets seem to almost entirely hold useless items or a handful of rosaries you'll have to spend soon after, and very little in this game actually feels like a power up beyond the movement options you get. Some of the bosses also have tedious filler like having to fight through arena waves of trivial enemies each time you want to attempt them. It's still a good action game but it feels like it's missing the core of what I liked about hollow knight, a fun exploration that leaves you feeling like you gain something beneficial each time you complete exploring a zone. Almost all of Hollow Knight's harder bosses also had instant run backs through the dream nail, or unlocked a chance to practice against them in the pantheon.

what is it that wills one to buy a videogame known for its difficulty, get frustrated at its difficulty, be unwilling to accept that they are not good enough, unwilling to learn how to overcome its challenges, unwilling to even attempt to git gud, and then demand that the fundamentals of the game be changed and nerfed down to their poor skill level?
what causes this? is it narcicism? is it entitlement? is it something else?

Hollow Knight 1
>You have enough health to make mistakes while learning patterns
>Patterns are heavily telegraphed, almost braindeadingly so
>makes you feel like a god gamer, effortlessly able to beat bosses in one try, two-tries tops

Hollow Knight Silksong
>Way more punishing, you're dead in 3-4 hits
>Patterns are still telegraphed, but with tighter windows and things like contact damage have become a big problem because you're trying to get in after evading attacks and find you're taking damage because the boss is going into their next attack already

Too many people are complaining about the difficulty (which was never the problem with the game) and not enough people are pointing out the ACTUAL problems with the game.

>tedious busywork bullshit miniquests that have no real gameplay value, and generally don't have good rewards
>too many "fight a gauntlet of enemies before you fight the actual boss" fights. I don't remember this constantly being a thing in Hollow Knight
>map is almost a little too big, and can be kinda boring to traverse if you're really trying to find everything, especially in Act 3 when you've already exhausted most of what you can in Act 2 and are forced to traverse the map AGAIN but this time with even more annoying enemies
>having to constantly use the Grand Bellway to swap between the Bell Beast and the elevator was pretty annoying
>no Trial of the Fool type gauntlet, which I assume they're saving for DLC
>pacing felt kind of odd in Act 2, and really tanked in Act 3. I felt overwhelmed with stuff to do, and I really wanted to see the ending. So I skipped a bunch of stuff just to finish the game and see the true ending. Eventually I'll go back in for 100%
>bit of a nitpick, but if you really try to make sense of the map, you'll realize the geography and layout of Pharloom makes absolutely no fucking sense whatsoever

This is true in hollow knight as well, if you try to construct a map of the whole world you'll have to cheat by extending hallways between rooms and moving rooms around to avoid rooms overlapping each other. I assume it's a fault of the devs going for a more organic approach to designing the areas instead of following a grid like older games.

That's not entirely what I mean. I meant more that it feels like the biomes conflict with each other. Why is it raining in Greymoor? Why is there a super cold wintery wonderland with a giant mountain.... but underground somehow? And it's above a desert? Which is above another rocky, sand blasted desert? And why does mosshome look like it belongs outdoors? Why is there sunlight underground?

I 100% metroidvanias as I go. Each new upgrade is a call to comb the entire explorable map and find every newly unlocked path. That's why when I got the completion tracker in Act 3 I was already at 90%. If I wanted to just follow the main objective markers I could have easily beat the game in like 20 hours.

I distinctly remember wasting 30 minutes at the start of the game using the flies over bonebottom to pogo my way to craggler and kill it. Took like 3 attempts. 1 died to surprise, 2nd to jank, 3rd slowly chipping away. I considered even grinding out the 500 for the simple key to see what was that direction but rosary drop rates were low enough I just moved on.

I did the sands of karakh as soon as I got harpoon upgrade and it was definitely the platforming highlight so far. I've done the path above the cradle and its nowhere near as fun as no double jump karakh.

I fought the cancer ant duo at the top of hunter's march before wall cling. Was not worth, but this is an example of how I play metroidvanias for better or for worse.

I did the same, and went for the worms as soon as I could afford the key (a quick grind next to marrow bell station). Heavily disappointed when my progress was cut short almost immediately by a jump there was no way to make. I 100% and beat act 3, and the only thing I really hated was shards. There's really no reason for tools to be both limited uses between rests and require a currency to replenish. Knowing that I could burn 100 shards per attempt on a boss that might take 10 attempts made me really hesitant to use them at all. Periodic quests to turn in 400+ also didn't help. I basically didn't use them at all until act 3, and it only made the game less enjoyable to be discouraged from utilizing the tools provided. Because I went 2 acts without using them, I never ran out, but burned nearly every replenish item I'd collected in the game by the time I beat the final boss.

Dying is already enough of a punishment. There's no reason to also have the dread of grinding looming over the average players head for losing too much.

I learned to start saving them for phase 2 of bosses back in Act 2. You want to make sure you have a clean attempt which involves not fucking up the first phase anyway and then just burn through them after that. It forced me to learn the boss patterns a bit better as well.

It's when a game makes things easier for the player in a way that creates logical inconsistencies for the world and pulls the player out because they can see the hand of the developer.

For example compare Y's Oath's first boss to Hollow Knights Traitor Lord
>Y's first boss creates a shield that requires a charged fireball to break
>You can't charge fireballs by default and need to find an item in the dungeon to do so
>The boss arena is still open so you can run into an unwinnable fight due to lack of preparation, just like real life
>Traitor Lord as a full screen attack that needs to be I-Framed through
>So he's behind a gate that requires I-Frames to pass
>So it creates that niggling thought in the back of your mind "Why did he fight here, he ambushes you anyway, why did he ambush you in an area where he knew you had a chance?"

Luna Knights has a similar thing, in one stage there are corkscrew crushing floors that you need to slow down in order to slide under. Then the boss of that area shoots out magical crushing floor constructs that the player instinctively knows how to dodge. Why would the boss do this, what benefit do they gain from recycling stage hazards. Tevi has another example, in one area enemies use grenades that are color coded based on their fuse length. Even ignoring how "gamified" that is the boss of that area uses the same grenades in more complex patterns, but they player would have instinctively learned how do dodge them and gets more practice with every run back. Artificial Easiness is treating the game like it's a test, the stage is the class and the boss is the exam. That's not how real life works and seeing past the curtain pulls players out of the experience. That's why Elden Ring took off like it did, delays, roll catches, feints, they all make the game more realistic and treat the audience like they gamers instead of some babies that need their handheld. It's just better design.

More self-investigation, i find i can have a single "cutscene" thats allowed to function, before cutscenes just give up (all future cutscenes are just a black screen or softlock my game until i reboot) i'll spare you the further details but its weird.

I essentially had to boot up the game, beat the judge is one try, no death (if i died, i had to close down and reboot the game), then when hornet is at the door, the cutscene plays like it should, and now i can progress act 2 as normal super wierd.

One of the most frustrating things with sequels is that the devs "have" to basically reset everything with some excuse as to why the protagonist has become a weak bitch again. So people who have played the original have to waste a ton of hours to reach the same level of power and gameplay complexity of the previous game's endgame.

Team Cherry did the actually brave thing: they still made the protagonist a bit weaker with an excuse, but the game quickly progresses to a higher difficulty level than the original with more interesting and enjoyable movements and skills. The basically ackniwledge that the original HK is still an incredibly good game (which it is) and if you have never played it and want to hop onto Silksong directly you ard basically a zoomer consoomer retard

Yeah it's more dangerous to get hit during healing in Silksong than in Hollow Knight. But compared to Hollow Knight it's incredibly unlikely to happen. Because you're way fucking faster. You have way better aerial control. And you can while suspended in the air.
You can always find a safe spot to heal in. You don't need to endure and pray that you'll make it until the very specific parts in the boss patterns that allows for you to heal the way it was in Hollow Knight. Instead you always have the opportunity because you there are always safe spots in the arena to heal in. This is true for every single boss fight in the game, from your Mossflies and Beastflies, to First Sinner, Lost Lace, Karmelita, or Silk herself. There is no exception. It always allows you safe opportunities to heal.

Also, a few bosses actually do this annoying thing where when they are stunned, they CRASH down hard on you, doing 2 masks of damage. Such an annoying trap. The developers know the moments that you are desperate to heal, and exploit your desperation.

I'm convinced that anyone asserting this game is made by geniuses is super low IQ. There is no good balance or genius behind the "difficulty" of many things like fanboys assert.
I'm convinced a lot of the worst bosses are just a result of laziness, incompetence and jank.

This game doesn't even have a smooth difficultly progression like other well designed games have. it's just all over the place.

Lace can't reach you up in the air. She can't. You are 100% safe. Doesn't matter where in her pattern she is currently. There is no moment across the entire boss battle where Lace can harm you when you're up in the arena. Every moment of the fight allows you to use your great movement to run up and heal.

If you're faster than the bosses and they can't reach the opposite end of the screen or they're busy doing some other attack then you can very safely heal all the time.
Your mistakes can be made up for so much more easily than in Hollow Knight thanks to this.

Is Karmelite dancing off of the opposite of the screen? Jump up and heal. Are both of you at one of the end of the screen? Run away and bounce up on the wall and heal in the upper corner. Is she piruitting across the floor or running across it to summon the floor spikes? Just jump and heal suspended, mid-air above the mid-section of the arena and you're safe. There is never an opportunity during the fight where you can't heal. You are always able to heal. And if you fail to do so, then it's a skill issue and not because the fight doesn't have ample opportunities to do so all the time.
This is very unlike Hollow Knight fights where healing is downright limited to very specific holes in the enemy boss pattern. Where healing is downright not allowed outside of said holes.

I wasn't talking about Lace specifically. But even in your webm, it shows that after you get enough silk to heal, you get hit by one of her attacks, and then have to wait for her other attack to come out, before you calculate that it's safe to run up the wall. >SILKSONG GETS A 6/10
No. It got a 3/5. Are you blind?
Also reading through the review it's absolutely ridiculous. It's fine if you think the game is difficult but to go over in detail the many parts that filtered you and then just knock off points in your review because of it is utterly ridiculous. What about all the players who wanted an even more difficult experience? The review is written as if his opinions of difficulty are some kind of universally shared standard.

>Very few of the combat challenges in Silksong are short frenetic engagements
>instead, they’re drawn-out battles of attrition
>Rarely is Silksong actually testing your skills — it’s testing your patience.
This is genuinely just a self-admission that he sucks at the game. It does not mean the game's challenges are actually bad. And his preference for short and frenetic engagements over larger challenges, doesn't mean larger challenges are bad. White Palace and Path of Pain were my favourite parts of Hollow Knight and I'm overjoyed that Silksong leaned much more into that kind of experience for this game (event though none of the platforming challenges reaches even White Palace's challenge). Likewise I always really liked the Colosseum of Fools. And Silksong likewise leaned into that kind of experience with lots of enemy gauntlets and closed combat arenas. And I love it. Especially since Hornet's massively boosted movement allows you to bounce from enemy to enemy in ways you never could in Hollow Knight. And enemy gauntlets honestly allows for movement feats that not even the boss battles allow for with all the enemies to play off of. But the boss battles are absolutely magnificent in their own right with the high paced yet elaborate enemy patterns that ask of you to make use of Hornet's own movement.
But that deserves a lower score because he prefers "short frenetic engagements"? Fucking wow.

>The infamous bench within Hunter’s March is a microcosm of Silksong’s uniquely tiring brand of deliberate cruelty
>a safe refuge after an extended series of increasingly difficult platforming and combat challenges ending in a tough gauntlet that likely leaves you with low health — except, unlike every other bench in the game, this one breaks Silksong’s own rules of safety and swings a deadly spike trap at you upon sitting down.
>It’s not reactable unless you know it’s there, and it’s very unlikely for a player to be looking for the well-hidden trap mechanism amongst the greenery in the ceiling.
It's completely fine if the trap got you. But don't cope by convincing yourself it was a foregone conclusion or that others wouldn't have noticed or reacted to it. On your way here you should have encountered numerous traps of the same kind already. And as he acknowledges himself, it is visually possible to spot the trap before you even trigger it. Then when you do trigger it there is a very recognizable audio cue that warns you of the trap. And unless you somehow avoided all the traps all the way up until the bench, it should have been somewhat familiar to you.
>Being forced to make the trudge back through the March after almost certainly dying on your first visit isn’t engaging or motivating; it’s just a bore.
>There’s nothing inherently wrong with designing a game to make the player suffer, but there has to be more engaging approaches than empty time-wasting and pace-damaging sadism.
Again with the self-reports. I reached the bench after the platforming and combat gauntlets. And I honestly don't even remember if I got hit by the trap or not. I am certain that I fled the bench and though I believe I did so successfully. I had enough health left to take the hit anyway. Why is he acting so fucking sure that the player ought to be at critical health?

>The consequence of punishing design like this is that exploration more often feels terrifying than exciting, with your brain firmly grasping onto the memory of how long ago the last bench was rather than wondering what new discovery could lie past the next secretly breakable wall — a feeling entirely antithetical to the Metroidvania genre.
Ridiculous. Dying in literal Metroid can be just as harrowing if not more so. Metroid games does not actually have a track record of being particularly generous with its checkpoints. If the only difference is that you feel safer and less inclined to die when playing Metroid, then that's again just a self-report and says more about what kinds of risks you're inclined take or not. Like in Metroid you can run through lava infested caverns before you've even gotten the Varia Suit. Then emerge on the other side after the heat has drained your health, and you'll be without a save/recharge station and you'll be praying that you'll stay alive until you actually achieve something productive. And his choice of not doing dangerous shit like this in Metroid still says more about him than it does about the game. And to compare it to Silksong again. YOU DON'T EVEN NEED TO BE IN THE HUNTER'S MARCH to begin with. It is very comparable to Metroid's lava sections in that way. Granted that he might have not known that the Hunter's March wasn't progress but to knock off points off of the game for this is again ridiculous.

Look at the final summary of his own review
>Difficulty falls into tiring, needless sadism rather than engaging challenge
>Pacing damaged by difficulty and destroyed towards the end
>Exploration feels more fearful than fantastical as a result
All these three are him-issues not game issues. And if this would happen to apply to you too, and you don't like the game because of it. That's fine. But it's not a game issue. It'd be like me giving fucking Tetris a 4/10 because I fucking suck at it.

And then wait for her other attack to come out? Yeah.
But if every attack is an opportunity to run away and heal. Then the entire fight is an opportunity to run away and heal. I am not sure I'm getting what you're saying.
Of course you can't just heal wherever and whenever. But you always have the opportunity to run off to claim the safe points that always exist. You can pause the game at any point in the fight and point out if not several, at least one point in the arena where it's safe to heal. At any point. If you try to do that with Hollow Knight bosses and you'll have tons of moments where there is no point in the arena to heal at all since you have to wait for the given heal opportunity given to you by the hole in the enemy boss pattern.

Are you genuinely disagreeing with me here? I don't get it. Not to be unnecessarily blunt but I kind of feel like I'm being all but objectively correct here. I don't think it's up much for opinion or interpretation.
Give me 40 random screenshots of a Karmelita fight and I bet every single one of them will have points where it's possible to heal. Give me 40 random screenshots of Grimm, Soul Master, Mantis Lords, Hive Knight, Dung Defender, or Zote or whatever, and I'm sure it'll be entirely different.

Team Cherry loves contact damage for some reason. I haven't touched Silksong yet since I've been replaying Hollow Knight to try and actually beat the Pantheon this time, but I noticed things that really annoyed me.

One is that they gutted the ground pound's I-frames, so if you try to actually ground pound the enemy you get hit out of it by the contact damage. It just feels wrong to ground pound the space right next to them, like needing to unlearn decades of video game common sense. The other is that some enemies, not many, have a roar that stuns you in place. It's almost like old Monster Hunter where the enemy roars, your controls are turned off for longer than the roar, so it just walks into you afterwards for some free damage.

On the other hand, I'm also not sure I buy a lot of the Silksong complaints, people make the game seem like all the bosses are Ascended difficulty by default, more HP, 2 heart damage, and less fair arenas, but there's something in the discussion that reminds me of when of Dark Souls vs Nioh started. Nioh is a very different game, it gives you tons of tools for free and expects you to use them. Your character is faster, you have more options during a fight, your block is better, so the enemies are harder. People tried to play Nioh like Dark Souls, waiting for the enemy to attack and then punishing them, taking turns, and they hated it because Nioh doesn't work that way. You're so much more mobile and your moves have so little commitment it expects aggressive play, just being able to instantly heal in the air completely changes the pace of the fight and people playing the game like Dark Souls or Hollow Knight are just missing the point.

>There is 0 imagination, especially those that are just before bosses. And most of the bosses followed by the gauntlets are actually weak as fuck. The gauntlets are actually there to hide the fact that some bosses barely have 1 or 2 move and that's it.
But they're a package. The gauntlets are part of the challenge. The game isn't just a boss rush.
In what way is an enemy gauntlet worse than a boss fight? They've got many cool qualities to them that aren't even shared by boss fights.

If anything it's very cool how you can bounce from enemy to enemy in enemy gauntlets in way boss fights don't really allow you to.
There is also a degree of legitimate crowd control since you've got influence over their actions from baiting attacks or from scaring them with your own. It's cool stuff. Genuinely.
But people just act as if they're inherently inferior content or something and I just don't get it.

I think the issue is, contact damage to what? The parts of her body that are hitboxes? Or all of her? She’s fucking huge, you couldn’t navigate PAST her if all of her did contact damage. If it was only the vulnerable parts, you’d have a legibility issue with it being unclear which parts of her were dangerous foreground elements and which were harmless background elements.

Again, it’s just a problem with big bosses in general. The logic of video games necessarily makes them less threatening; they are slower, larger, more predictable targets, because they have to be. If Granny Silk worked like a normal boss she’d be fucking impossible because she’d make half the screen a permanent hurtbox.

Well Karmelita definitely didn't need her own gauntlet lmao. And what about Khan? Why even make this boss? Nobody takes damage on Khan, except contact damage. He's literally worst than most regular enemies.

Nobody said this was a boss rush, but bosses are important and arguably more fun that the regular ounga bounga gauntlet with contact damage. It's just not fun.
I want cool bosses, not a billion times the same monsters.

I finished the game at 100% so I feel like I'm entitled to this opinion. This game is good, but it could have been way better. It feels like 2HP contact damage itself was added just to make the game more difficult for no specific reason.

I'm hoping it gets something cool as DLC though.

>Lace can absolutely anti-air you for two masks of damage and she does it all the time.
her anti-air is her most telegraphed move, she only does it out of neutral or as the 2nd or 3rd part of her dash combo, idk why they decided to do it like that because she's a sitting duck if you stay airborne, even triggering her parry is to your advantage

I just spoiled it a bit for myself out of curiosity, and I have to say, I get your point, but it’s not the same. It’s definitely the spiritual successor “arena with hazards repositioning every wave to make it interesting” but the fact that it has so many hallway interruptions kind of ruins it. For one thing, I suspect those are true checkpoints (most arenas stay cleared after clearing them) and for another they give you an indefinite respite to collect yourself. I know some people probably bitched about Fool being as long as it was but man, I really liked the whole

It's the same gimmick they pulled in HK where the city of tears was raining because it was beneath the blue lake. This time it's because greymoor is beneath bilewater which is being fed by the citadel's wastewater from the ducts so in effect greymoor is a double entendre in that the landscape is grey and it's being fed by greywater.

Bonebottom and far fields are the same as queen's gardens and greenpath in that's it's green because it looks nice, there's no reason for it but the games would be a lot more dull if the only plant life you get is roots and mycelium.

Mount fay and the deserts are pure set pieces they don't make any sense nor do they try to.

He's really good if you like a James Joyce sort of thing. Very linguistically advanced, he rewrote everything ten times to make sure it's exactly right, a meticulously constructed narrative etc.

Unfortunately, art for art's sake is worthless for 99% of humans on earth. Looking at the history of the 20th century, it's not hard to see why people would forget about these kinds of works in favor of contemporary commentaries and escapism.

(note: I've never read him either, but I've read Kundera's autistic rants about how he was pretty much the best novelist ever up there with Dostoyevsky and Diderot)

Do I at least get some kind of tracker for these flees so I don't have to scour every crevice of the map? Think I'm missing four if these requirement guides are anything to go by. Nobody complained about Geo not having a purpose. In fact, the price for shops were pretty steep last game too.
But also, in the previous game, upgrading your weapons costs geo too. I just think it's unfair to charge rosary this time, because the previous upgrade didn't cost rosary. Plus, the requirement to attain the oil was already quite high. I think it harms the game to place arbitrary monetary thresholds, when the experience itself was already taxing. The player should just be able to get the reward directly as compensation for their hard work.

To enter act 3 you need to
>rescue at least 20 fleas and move them to the putrified ducts (this requires beating last judge since they won't move there until the boss is beaten)
>do every side quest on the billboards (you need to talk to every npc in bellhart to get the donation quests to pop up, you most likely won't miss it but in my most recent playthrough i forgot to talk to the relic bug)
>beat lace 2
Then a side quest will open up which requires you to beat the boss of bilewater, find a tool and talk to 2 npcs.

I don't mind the difficulty of Silksong on the whole, but there's fair few niggling annoyances
>so many flying enemies are very evasive, making them annoying to hit
>they will also follow after you basically forever, so in certain areas you just can't ignore them
>toss some of those flying enemies into a fight arena with other mobs and they quickly become nightmarish
>fair few boss runbacks feel just time consuming, they don't even pose a challenge in terms of enemy placement
>areas like bilewater just being a drag
>hilariously many things in the game do two damage, makes getting extra health earlier on feel kinda weak
At least healing is three points of health a pop, I'll give Team Cherry that
>some boss hitboxes feel huge, almost like they suck you in if you get hurt. like, the game expects you to fight or dodge the boss in a very specific way, and doing anything else gets you punished
>bosses having contact damage when they stagger and fall on top of you is funny, but a bit jank
>some boss attacks' wind up time borders on being "if you see this animation, you're too late to dodge it" tier, in terms of reaction times required
>maybe the freeze damage timer on mount fay could stand to be at least a couple to few seconds longer, some segments felt pretty tight
Kind of lots and lots of little things like that. Nothing game breaking individually, but they kind of pile up and make things feel a bit untested and uneven.
I 100%'d the game, and I feel no inclination to try doing steel soul mode.

>very little in this game actually feels like a power up beyond the movement options you get
I'm going to disagree with this and suggest that most of the game's power progression comes from player expression. As you go, you'll learn the intriciacies of the basic systems, learn how to use them creatively, choose which crests and tools to use, get comfortable with them, try new stuff and find combos that work well for you personally, etc. It's arguably harder to pull off elegantly than basic "your reward is bigger number" upgrades, but the first game was built around it too. Godhome worked because the game's combat systems were complex under the upfront simplicity, and that allowed for the consolidation and eventual mastery of the player's skill and understanding of the bosses and combat.

Get double jump if you don't have it yet, you will need it for the 4th ingredient unless you pogo off a roach and it makes the delivery much smoother.
