Season 4 tries to be an actual sequel to the first game with some progress to the old formula, there's actual gameplay instead of being pure playable cutscenes, some work put into the supporting characters to allow for different outcomes for them. And the overall highlight being grown Clem and influencing AJ to become whatever you want, make it a stronger game. It's Telltale actually trying and whatever shortcomings it has, especially in the second half, are sadly placed on the fact that the company went bankrupt in the middle of the season, and even their original plans had to be dialed back due to all the late TT games flopping and having less money to make assets compared to before.

What I would give if they delved more into Clem's mental health, there's something wrong with her underneath the surface but she mostly pulls through by focusing on the present and taking care of AJ is a way to better focus. I like the scene when AJ is asking Clem about traumas and asks if there's a form to make them go away, I remember that she can imply that putting her focus on AJ is what helped her avoid the pain from her past. I have never liked that playing Clem as the biggest kennyfag was never shown at any point in the last 2 games in dialogue. I would have especially liked Clem being able to talk about her 2 apocalypse dads instead of only Lee.

His death was irritating, there was literally zero reason to walk across the incredibly dangerous frozen pond when the little house they were trying to reach was accessible with like a 1-2 minute trip going around the pond.

Seriously look at a clip of his death and the surrounding area around the pond to the house is completely clear of debris, walkers, and trees. The pond is maybe half the size of a football field as well, so it really wouldn't be much effort to walk around. Plus I'm pretty sure at that point Luke got shot in the leg, so walking on slippery as fuck ice vs powdery snow just doesn't make sense.
