Competitive gaming can be fun, but the games are often tied into feedback structures that waste time and leave you with no memories of substance. This isn't a problem exclusive to competitive games, though, as plenty of GaaS titles and especially competitive GaaS titles have it too. Keeping it to older/smaller titles and just playing rounds with friends or people in matchmaking communities is good, anything with a queue sets off an alarm in my head.
I've lost my taste for all that stuff after realizing how much time I'd lost to a couple titles, but a lot of my friends still enjoy them. We'll all stream to each other and often in the time it takes them to play 2-5 Deadlock matches I'll have beaten a small singleplayer game. They never really think about those matches again past the victory screen, but I'll take a lot with me from those games

After Blizzard's 2019 WoW Classic. I rolled there with my old guild that I used to play vanilla private servers with since 2013 but haven't been in touch with for a couple years. They were top tier back then, but turns out they've gotten a lot more hardcore over the years (so did the entire community, let's be honest, the retail zoomer competitive scourge ruined everything). This was my first character that I've gotten to 60 in a week, the first character I've leveled primarily in dungeons, the first character I've had less than a dozen honourable kills during leveling (I usually made a point of staying in STV for at least a couple of weeks just to fight people, amassing hundreds of kills) and at the end of week one, we spent 12 hours trying to clear molten core with a green-geared raid where half the people were level 56 or so, only getting as far as majordomo. I remember coming to Orgrimmar when the torture was finally over and realizing all the NPCs had yellow names because I've done so few quests, my undead was still Neutral with most Horde factions. I felt completely disgusted with myself, like for the first time in 10 or so years I had spent in WoW by that point, I was actually playing it wrong. Managed to last a couple more weeks before I couldn't take this shit no more, cancelled my subscription and never looked back. I played a couple characters since, but never more than a couple of months, and never raided again. Hardly touched any other multiplayer games either, I spend most my of my time excercising my autism in city builders and 4x games now.

I sometimes feel the itch for multiplayer shootan, which I haven't played since Warzone.

Because fair competitive gaming (CoD, BF, LoL, Mortal Combat, Smash, Ect) is awesome. Fighting people makes it feel satisfying in a way bots can never be.

For me, it was when all of my friends got jobs after highschool and stopped talking with one another. For the first year or two it was pretty nice, staying up later every night and playing vidya, but then everyone started to move away or hang out with coworkers and I eventually found myself playing alone. The only times we did play together, everyone wanted to play Siege or some MOBA. Playing Battlefield alone in small bursts was fun, but at some point I realized I was just doing it to kill time. Having to chase battle passes and seasonal rewards didn't feel as tiring as it was until I got into a singleplayer kick and spent a few weeks just playing Dark Souls and Zelda. Going back to shit like Destiny and Battlefield after that felt like going to a job. Still pissed because I missed one really cool helmet in BFV when it was alive, because the weekly battlepass froze up for everyone at the last challenge. Rather than fix it, DICE just moved on to the next Tides of War objective. Not only did nobody get that helmet, but it was sold for money later in a bundle. Fuck DICE.

I think the last time I played in a party with everyone, I fell asleep because I had to wait an hour for them to finish their dailies in Overwatch or some shit before we could do a Destiny 2 raid. I also got tired of multiplayer games constantly rebalancing guns and gear that I liked, even the off-meta "trash" ones.

Playing singleplayer games is just a lot less stressful, and I can play them at my own pace without fear of missing out on anything. No balancing issues, no waiting for everyone to do X daily or Y challenge, no sitting in a queue for fifteen minutes to find the right online server, and no constant updates that waste my time before I can play. I just start the game up and do what I want to do.

I still play some casual Halo every now and then. I've gotten into Warthunder recently, too, but 90% of my library nowadays is made up of older singleplayer stuff.

This is a big thing. I've played League of Legends for 10+ years, and i remember very little from it. There are a few moments that were quite epic and memorable, but most of my time playing were matches that you win or lose and go next without any substance.

Single player games that i played for way less time left more of a mark on me. When it comes to online gaming MMO RPGs that i played for less time also have created more meaningful memories for me.

I actually avoided it for the most part outside of League of Legends, as I had seen and heard horror stories of people's behavior in stuff like DotA and... I think Counterstrike? Regardless I didn't want to deal with a raging idiot on the regular in my refuge from a raging idiot.
It was more or less fine for me until about 2020, 2021. Started getting worse, not a bad thing in isolation since self improvement is a thing, but it was coupled with constantly drawing aggro from nerds getting told to get cancer and other generic things I didn't bother committing to memory. On the less extreme end a friend had a conniption over dumb shit which was about when I decided I didn't want to deal with it anymore. Probably should have chewed someone the fuck out multiple times in hindsight, honestly. Had a good 10 years of fun out of it, wish I played some things more than others while they were still available, more than some games can say.

In 1v1s or even 2v2s your victory depends entirely on your performance so it's hard to get mad at anyone other than yourself. And you can usually tell what needed to happen differently in order for you to have won.
In large team games, you just go with the flow and everyone chips in. Retards can be carried because they are a small percentage of your overall chance of success. Unless you're really really good, typically the match is somewhat out of your control and you know it.

In small teams games like 5v5s you now hold 20% sway over the match, which is large enough to have the potential to carry (in theory), but the remaining 80% of how the match is decided is in the hands of fucking retards who you have zero control over - and just one retard is all it takes to eat shit the whole match since these smaller teams means everyone has to work together. That's the issue with LoL, when you watch a lot of the pro games you get to see the game played on a level that's astronomically above your own. The way they position themselves, and dive and even close out games- turning a single teamfight into a complete victory is all amazing. But absolutely none of it comes through when you're just playing normal, regular games. I burnt out on Hunt Showdown. After reaching top MMR and getting paired with meta slaves and cheaters the fun evaporated.
In this game your MMR goes from 1 to 6 stars, 6 being the best.
The climb from 3-5 was the most fun I ever had in a PvP game because the game was still relatively unknown back then and people just tried random shit before a meta was wildly established. But after a while the game was just "solved": you'd the the same few loadouts every game despite there being tons of cool and viable combinations.
Everyone just stopped doing the PvE content and just focused on the PvP fights which lead to agonising camping stalemates. And every compound had its optimal spots both for defense and offense. Every peaking spot, every wallbang, every angle was ingrained into the 6star players which killed fun for me. And yeah, I always suspected it had a cheater problem but it tooks years until CryTek acknowledged it.

But it was the only PVP game I was truly good at. Now when I try something like BAR or YOMI Hustle I just envision the many many hours it would take to even begin gitting gud and I just don't have that time anymore to just grind away at a single game like that. I'm now a happy casual gamer that plays single player games at my own pace, maybe some coop games now and then with the boys.

/tg/s take up most of my freetime now anyway and it's a farly superior hobby. Vidya just fills the gaps between sessions.

Raiding in 2014, the first and only time I got world buffs was when I attended a BWL speedrun, didn't even know they were a thing until then (besides the customary head of Onyxia before every raid night). Raiding in 2018, most guilds were getting them every raid, DM and Songflower, and every damned thing. Blizzard's indifference definitely didn't help the issue, but I'm not even sure they could have done anything. They definitely could've avoided making those fucking layered megaservers though, I didn't even know Classic could feel like fucking retail WoW because servers were so large, you could freely fuck over random people because the chances of encountering them again were nil. I used to feel bad for not getting to experience "real vanilla" playing those bugged private servers a decade ago, but now I understand that what I got to play was infinitely closer to the real thing than what exists now. I agree that PvP is the focus but getting the bounty and extracting with it is still the win condition and early on sneaking away with the bounty and extractnig was a core gameplay experience. Fighting the boss before any other team could reach you and avoiding fights was a viable and fun strat. But after a while it got too dangeorus to even try and go for the boss because 3 teams could already be camping the compound and wait for the less patient player to make the first move.

The setting and gunplay are also completely wasted on a PVP game. It has pretty cool lore and was only turned into an extraction shooter/battle royale mid development because that was modern in the late 2010s. I mostly played bacause of the vibes and the cool guns and just got gud incidentally by playing a lot in the world I wanted to see more of. But IDK how modern Hunt even plays, as I said I quit around 2021 or so which was years before it hit peak player count.

The Henchman model of co-op really should be more common. It was a lot of fun in Fable 2, being able to just hop in and fight as a generic follower character, and you still see it occasionally today with games like Baldur's Gate 3 letting you take over a character. It's also how a budy and I tried playing through the Skyrim Together mod, as you effectively need one player to be the one getting quest items and activating the flags for progress.

That one's a particular sore spot regarding this topic, given that discussions surrounding it have encompassed basically everything said in previous posts about people kneejerking towards desires for co-op and how they believed it ""HAS"" to be implemented. I was never competitive in the first place so never. I did enjoy some local coop shit and lan parties with friends but I never could get into online games. I like farming so you'd think I'd like MMOs but I couldn't like those either despite trying to force it because all of my friends got consumed by lineage. In hindsight I got lucky, fuck Korean grinding. Fightan is one exception but that's only because I enjoy the process too much and the genre doesn't work against bots but I still hate having to rely on someone I don't know not to ruin my personal time with shit connection.

I find that's when I typically impose challenges and restrictions during a single player game. The perk about playing a single player game is if you find a strategy that exploits the AI you can always have the option to have self control to not do so. I've never cared about multiplayer. Never got into an MMO, never once played a battle royale game, I had stints where I played Counter-Strike and for like 2 years I kept up with COD (COD4, WAW and MW2) then I gave up.

I simply play games to be by myself, that's how I enjoy them. I don't want coop, I don't want multiplayer, I just wanna be alone in the game world.

I guess first time was when I got so mad at some WoT tier IX shitfest that I punched my mouse and it flew into my second monitor, breaking both. That's when I had a moment of introspection and realized this shit wasn't healthy. I still continued with War Thunder and it never really made me mad, but I just got bored out of my mind. Every match was a chore going through the motions. Even winning didn't really feel like anything more than having wasted my time. Same with FPS games, I tried BF1, supposedly the best modern day BF, and I was just tired and bored a few hours in. The last competitive game I have fond memories of is BC2 from the ancient era, nothing ever since has left me with any lasting impression or even a memory of having had a good time.

Post 25 you play those games less because of various reasons: youre less competitive, youve seen and experienced similar games already and they keep repeating mostly, youve experienced your highs and lows in the rankings, kids around 15-20 in online shooters are annoying af and you already know that theres more fun online games/communities out there, your taste changes and you try different games

If the gameplay is really good I try it (still coming back to titanfall2 occasionally) but mostly I play cooperative games nowadays, also good fun
