I've been using a lot of lates and they're currently the most position reliant just because of Pump. But from what I can see, the most important thing is getting your acceleration at the right time. It's why people check when in the race to accelerate, and while some of these skills do give that huge boost you want in order to win, not all of them do it consistently. You don't understand what you're looking at. That stamina consumption table you're quoting is for the lead contest mechanic which is unique to front/runaway. It only applies for a few seconds at a time and only if there's 2+ fronts or 2+ runaways doing the contest. They speed up and consume extra stamina.

So the 7.7x stamina rate only applies for the few seconds during lead contest when there's 2 runaways competing and they're rushed. Actual stamina requirement for runaway is high but it's not a silly number like that.
