fuck this
funny how every dev has 1 (one) big huge problem that prevents him from making a game

the key of making games is just being free

Just live at your grandma's house and never work. work is a meme.
just make games.
even if they dont succeed.
Just do them. eventually one game will become hit. even if it will take 10-20 years

Even more. Some of stuff that inspired many people and became cult classic, was considered a fail/flop when they made it after hard work. But they managed to become famous later because they never gave up

Working on a pseudo-RTS within a strategy board game shell. You move assets between points on a map, "zoom" into points to build bases, and watch battles occur over them using crude NPC logic. I just habitually went with the GBA-inspired sprites for an older build, but would it be better if I force myself to learn Blender and go for a 90s RTS look? Any other style suggestions?

look up pixiv sensei tutorials on how to paint anime illustrations, they cover stuff like rocks and trees.

What you want is just anime painting fundamentals.

As for tools, you can use blender and then UV to paint using Krita.

As for a practical tip, besides learning 2D painting fundies and color theory, you should like understand the diference between a soft brush (used for gradients, blending, transitions, soft shadows, ambient oclussion) and a hard brush (used for things like drawing, lines, human lines, cracks, scratches, hard shadows) and then learning to use special brushes like the ones used for folliage and dirt and use masks for things like grudge rust stencils and other things like mud patterns.

Besides that is just most of the time having good reference to copy.

> GBA or 90s RTS look
No matter what you choose, keep the internal resolution small. For example, your sprites look dull because they are very large compared to the actual details. So either add more details or reduce the resolution of your sprites.

For 90s RTS look, Factorio developers have a blog where they talk about how they did it.

Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)

Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."

Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

I know this is a stupid consideration, because I barely have a game at all, but I do wonder: Perhaps I should go apeshit with my theming and say fuck all to optics and appeal. Definitely a bad idea.
Example of my passionate ideas:
>gryphon chests and their shape
>no human women in my game at all
>demonstration (as could be done in a novel) of my religion (which no one else knows about or follows)
>roleplaying with my players
>commissioning fetish art of my characters (haven't made any characters yet)
>presenting my face on camera to do cringe skits and music videos to my barely-listenable tunes (haven't made any tunes yet)
I haven't made any characters or tunes yet because I don't know the context in which they would fit. I'd like to say Fuck It and lose myself. But if I did, I'd wake up tomorrow and be horrified.

That's it. 2 weeks, just re-importing and re-deleting assets. Anyway, the art direction for my Pepsi-Man-like game is "PS2 low res-ish stylized" realism. For reference, see Grand Turismo 3, it will look like that, i hope.

This isn't really the right way to go about it. First of all this doesn't account for AIslop and porn games and any game that's clearly not made for at least minor success. Second if you're getting into gamedev and want to make it big then you better be prepared to spend at least a few years on it, effectively specializing on it which is much easier if you've got a passion for gamedev not just making your own game.

> Yeah I meant the design
The idea itself is really neat (not a fan of auto-unit generation but that's a personal preference) but at the current state it's impossible to judge if its actually good or not. I don't think you should look for what "others" think about the design at this stage. You as the designer can see the essence in your head, but you can't except the same from the players. UI really effects how players feel about your game, and it's near impossible to ignore it and give feedback.

Every capture point makes two unique units, and can also be extended with structures. It’s like a little base/faction of its own. Capturing is done by the King and if the King dies, you lose.

oi bruv this website uses biscuits innit

anyway
i've been collecting bocchi images for a while now (to train AI on) and i've been noticing something. there's a lot of memes that just don't make sense. i actually don't believe that knowing the context having seen the anime would make them make sense. They're just completely lolrandom. they're just inserting goto into random scenarios, often straight up replacing the original character with goto and not modifying the joke whatsoever
im starting to think that bocchi is some kinda meaningless brainrot, and that goto has no personality or identifiable traits that would facilitate creation of humorous content. It's almost like they WANT to reference bocchi, but there's NOTHING to reference, so the end result is just "look it's an image of goto and she's uhhh basically not doing anything at all"

compare that to a popular character with a personality, like Harry from Disco Elysium and other characters. Every meme is entirely founded upon the premise and tone of the game. It's a game about a cop schizo, so there's cop things and schizo things. The memes will parody the relationships that the protagonist has with Kim, and other characters. They will parody the way the voices in his head talk to each other. They will reflect the tone and unique writing of the game. They will mimic the artstyle. Does Bocchi have an artstyle? no it doesn't. bocchi is not a "popular media has memes made about it". It's a weird obsession.
i don't like autists. they can be captivating but only if they're smart savant types. This nigga just spams his waifu with vague somewhat-gamedevvy-but-meaningless messages like "i'm making engine progress!" and then the faggy cheerful "sister" yapping that all animefags do.

but it's okay
when my AI model is complete, i will never have to think about this again. aggy will be saved byh me

I will help you: from the images collected I have deduced that she wants to perform in a rock band, but has advanced stage fright and other relatable insecurities. Why is this never used for humor in memes? What is the joke in "popular unrelated meme but person is photoshopically replaced with Bocchi"?

>character design that can be slotted into many different situations
you don't create jokes by slotting a character into a situation that doesn't make sense. There has to be some connection, some humorous punchline, some shared cultural reference. What the fuck is happening in picrel? Nothing. It's just a funny meme photo that replaces a character with Bocchi. for. no. reason.

I guess this is why the advice is to get 10-15k wishlists before launch, it's the only way to be in the top 10% of games.
Anonymous No.528186665
1. The real reason is that the autist thought that the name Goto is a reference to the keyword goto from the C programming language, and thought this was justification enough to promote her to be the mascot of the thread.

2. The other copycat anons are shitposting to feel like they belong to "gamedev" and procrastinate doing actual work. They also don't know reason 1 and think her actual name is "Bocchi".

3. The jannies are old normie men hired by Hiro and think anime is "board culture", so if anime girl is present it can never be off-topic. This explains why Bocchispam is never deleted but other avatarfags are (like fygon)

Mystery solved, now we can get to work.

There is a common fan headcanon where bocchi is a futa with a massive cock. The illustration you posted is by Khyle, who is well known for sus memes: https://twitter.com/khyleri/media

This website is 4chan, which has fostered a reaction image culture since its inception. Because Bocchi has a tendency to make a lot of funny faces and there are many different artists on the internet creating fanart of Bocchi, Bocchi naturally becomes a prime character to use for common generic reactions, similar to cats and frogs.

well uhhhh not that you care buuuuhhtt... dk... i've done many tests before and every single time scored very very low on autism, aspergers, and so on. I'm sociable and communicate fine with people, new people, not a lot of awkwardness. Also is it really fair for you to refer to 4chan users as "common populace"? Common populace is people who don't watch anime or use memes, or anything. Normies. 4chan users are the autistic ones. So if there's any conflict of sensibilities between me and 4chan users, surely i would not be the one on the autistic side.
>There is a common fan headcanon where bocchi is a futa with a massive cock
so what you're saying is that you confirm that this has no relation to the contents of the anime (all that stuff about doing music and having stage fright) and just lolrandom made up shit, so i was right?
>Because Bocchi has a tendency to make a lot of funny faces
that's fine, but that doesn't explain inserting her into various situations that do not create a meaningful humorous scenario, and instead just tell me of some kinda weirdo NPC who cannot parse or enjoy content unless his favorite reconigzable pink blob is there.

Bocchi is the embodiment of the anxious creative

Hitori Gotou (Bocchi) is a painfully shy girl who desperately wants to connect with others through her passion (in her case, guitar; for devs, it's games). She:
>Creates alone in her room
>Struggles with sharing her work
>Has big dreams but is held back by anxiety
This is extremely relatable to solo devs, many of whom are introverted, self-critical, and working in isolation.

it's a real problem because it discourages people from searching for new titles on their own and encourages them to rely on automated sorting algorithms. Those automated sorted algorithms in turn will only point people to things that are already popular and classify your game as the same level as the asset flips you are callously dismissing. Despite looking down on them, the truth is that by all objective standards, your game is no better than them.

A properly riced vim is second, but only pays off if you're constantly learning and even practicing nice shit that you'll use once every 3 months so you can use it without spending even more time looking up docs. This is many years of active dedication, and also must come with a properly riced shell and so on.
Good option for those inclined, but 2nd to VS Code, easily.

No dev alert, making sprites for fun.

Would you play a game as a golden hand shaped space ship that can turn projectiles and enemies into gold? And the points that make up your score is actually your ammo? No power ups to collect, just toggle your power setting between 1 and 4 and blast away. The more powerful your shots are, the faster your ammo (score depletes). You could also grab flashing enemies and objects to throw at other enemies and cause a chain reaction that leads to shot tons of gold bouncing around to collect.

This took forty five minutes. Sprites for its different power settings, for grabbing, holding, and throwing, the last one showing it taking damage.

Here's a very good method all of you can use to immediately disregard 90% of useless feedback

Let's say that some know-it-all post you a comment somewhere telling you that you should do A B and C to 'improve' your game. Ask yourself
- is this person my follower on this platform?
- is this peroson my follower on any platform at all?
- if yes, does this person ever engage with my content in any way?
- is this person a paying customer?
- has this person in any way supported your work?

If you answered 'no' to any of this you can immediately throw it in the trash. You can use your judgement to evaluate the other 10% of situations. Cheers.

Solo indie gamedev is one of the absolute hardest things you can be doing in life. Those that have it in themselves to work harder, git gud, and succeed will do so regardless of what they read on an anonymous image board and are impossible to "crab". Those that don't have it in themselves SHOULD give up for their own good. This jobby is not for everyone. In fact, most anons would be WAY better off if they give up this pipe dream of escaping the wagecage or imminent homelessness via solo indie gamedev and instead, bite the bullet, learn one single marketable skill, and get an industry job at some AAA studio. Too bad that sounds too realistic and practical. They would rather stay delusional.

Adding to this, there have been essentially ZERO successful solo indie gamedevs. The vast majority of supposed "solo indie gamedevs" were in fact NOT solo. Toby Fox had a team, including an artist who led the entire art direction of Undertale separate from Fox. Eric Barone had a publisher who gave him art contractors and more importantly playtest contractors to help hone the addictive nature of Stardew.

If you want to make a successful game you absolutely cannot be a solodev.

I'm not exaggerating when I say this: The better my game has become the more people have become dismissive or even openly hostile towards it. When it was a programmer art pile of nuts and bolts everyone complimented me and told me how great it is but the better it became the more it provoked angry and negative reactions from those same people.

/agdg/ wants you to fail. They want you to stay a loser with no realization and no future. The better you become the more they will hate you for it. Nothing about this is rational. Nothing about this is meritocratic. The better your game becomes it will just attract more hostility from the inner circle - those very same devs you know and love - they feel threatened by you. It's ugly but it's the truth.

I’m thinking of starting to make a game if I don’t get a job this summer, I’m thinking of doing a dungeon crawler kinda like king’s field with very rudimentary 3d since I can’t draw for shit(how originals), the thing is I’m struggling to find interesting mechanics, I already have that go in back out kinda thing like king’s field (god I fucking love king’s field) I have basically most of the setting in my head already, problem is I don’t have that much interesting original mechanics, the combat I kinda wanted to put in a side step mechanic but fight knight’s already kinda that, maybe it’s original enough in a non grid environment like real time combat, there’s more of that getting behind the enemy and back attacks and what not thing going on, like I attack the front and enemy does a stab and i dodge to the side and the he spins so I go back and then I go behind him and he does a back attack or whatever and it could have a more environment focused thing going on like more traps and enclosed spaces like more of a dungeon, sen’s fortress kinda thing,I love sen’s, I love the traps stuff, I just doesn’t feel very original over all
The setting is at least somewhat original I hope

Lore tldr is a "digital infection" of sorts. All the enemies in the game stem from these little virtual pet guys (that people carry around inside of weapons) consuming their owners. All the enemies are going to have some sort of signage or pattern that evokes the low-res virtual pet imagery.

As for exp there shall be no exp in the game! These guys are mostly decorative, but I might also let them alert other enemies if they see you.

One simple trick that took me a long time to figure is you should stop treating programming and math "personally", and what I mean by that is treating it as a very serious problem and overthinking a bunch about how it's solved that way and why and trying to understand it 100% and all of that jumble in your mind. Instead treat it as a kids toy you couldn't care less about, try to figure it out as if it's a children game, and if you can't, try again later or tomorrow.
I really don't know how to convey this properly but it's basically the "just stop caring" meme applied to math/programming.

It's not that complicated. int* is a pointer (address) to an int. * is also an unary operator called "dereference" which is the action of visiting an address. You can use the operator & called "address of" to get the address of a variable (i.e. a memory location).

The simplest way to learn pointers is in the context of C arrays, which are stored in sequential memory, and therefore you can directly perform math operations on those addresses. The [0] operator is the exact same as the * operator. my_array[1] is the same as *(my_array+1). and my_array[2] is the same as *(my_array+2).

Think of it: why would you even use pointers in the first place?

Example:
int a = 1;
int b = a;

That just works and there's nothing wrong with it. It's also fast because it just copies 32 or 64-bits depending on compiler optimization, CPU architecture and more.

Example 2:
int f(int a)
{
// There is NO way to change something outside this function without resorting to making the variable you want to change into a global or returning the new value from this function.
}
f(a);

int f2(int *a)
{
*a = 1; // Pointers are required in this case because there is no other way aside from the options I mentioned in f(int a)
}

int fret(int a)
{
return 1; // If you're not using global variables then you would return the new value. For this case this would still be fast and the compiler will insert not too many instructions.
}
int b = fret(a);

Example 3:
struct Data {
int myData[2000];
};
int f(Data d) // This will copy an int array every time you call this function if it even works at all because you might need more stack space.
{
// ...
}
Data f(void) // This will return and also copy an entire int array.
{
// ...
}
Depending on how the compiler will optimize this it may do a variety of options like adding a implicit pointer in the instructions before you call f(). But there are no guarantees and the worst case is that it will copy data unnecessarily.

Example 4:
int f(int *myData)
{
// ...
}
f(d.myData); // Passing a member will convert the array to a pointer.

Example 5:

Yes sis, the best way to learn is ALWAYS to deeply understand what the purpose of something is and why we do it in the first place. I never understood why high level OOP fags never think of pointers are just a reference, which is really all that it is. You need to use it to understand what it even is.

It's interesting that you say this, but all graphics are real time anyway, and video games are pretty much defined by the graphics being more flexible than other game formats. The entire picture is ALWAYS drawn, 60 times every second, and nothing shows up until the buffers are flipped, so... but in any case I find the most tedious things with turn based is the constant validation, checking, and displaying the results afterwards. You can't do it as it happens like in real time, only after, so you need to also keep track of lots of things.

It's more so that most of the interesting "system" interactions in a real-time game is handled by built-in systems like the physics engine. Rather than just using Areas and RayCasts, you are most likely writing out some kind of custom grid movement system. Rather than just calling to an animation player whenever the player executes an attack, you need to write out your own action sequencing system, not to mention all the extra UIs.

yep, I switched from blender to unreal recently, it's going ok, LOTS of annoying stuff, like phantom frames, copy paste sometimes doesnt work, flip poses is crazy work, dragging keyframe perf is shit, etc... but, if you make animation for UE game, I would still recommend it, because you don't have to deal with import/export issues, what you see is what you get. I also really like the rigging process, building rigs in UE is much more intuitive for me cause I'm a programmer.

Blender is still much better to animate in tho, I just.. really don't like import/export between blender and unreal, especially for animations that involve interactions between objects or characters, that pain is higher than the current UE animation tools pains.

I'll give a full post mortem once I've finished delisting it from Steam and scrubbing it from the internet as much as I can

No, the other version was better. Just release already. Or put all those shader options into the graphics menu if you can’t decide.

you need to look at nintendo games especially from the gamecube era

>The settings menu is buggy. When I went to change the camera sensitivity, the game reset to the default 1024x768 resolution in windowed mode for some reason. If you use KB/M and you click on an input you want to rebind with the mouse, you won't be able to enter a keyboard input. You have to navigate the menu with the keyboard to change any keyboard button bindings. The NVIDIA Overlay also showed the game was using 99% of my GPU which seems ridiculous when I've played much more demanding games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 which didn't get anywhere near that figure.

Alright now this one is meant to look mossy but I'm not sure if you artfags will rike it. What do you think? Does the grass need to be saturated here too and not de-saturated? Or does the level pass and I can post the next one?
