Classic era fans + journalists would have shat on it regardless. During the 2000s, the majority of the Sonic community just wanted Classic Sonic back. They did not want multiple characters unless it was Tails and Knuckles that play very similar to Sonic. They did not want to play in a 3D space, only 2D. They did not complex stories, just very simple ones. They did not want a serious tone, but instead a saturday morning cartoon tone akin to SatAM/AOSTH.
This is essential for why Colors used to be heavily praised back in the day.
