It was said somewhere on an official website that Cream specifically is capable of keeping up with Sonic. And as the "Girl Tails" character, that should not be any surprise.

Sonic Advance 2 introduces "Boost Mode" where everyone breaks the sound barrier, and Cream DEBUTS in this very game. Sonic Advance 2, more than anything else, is her DEFINING appearance. Or should we completely ignore Sonic 2 and say that Tails can't keep up with Sonic at all, can't fight, can't do NOTHING but fly a plane?

Sonic is the lead mascot main protagonist of the entire series, so every other significant playable character is built from that same mold. Just as Batman has an entire Bat family, and Superman has a Super family, and Flash has a Flash family... The "Sonic" family are all speedsters that can break the sound barrier and spin dash. This doesn't trivialize Sonic, because the entire point with him is that he is the FASTEST THING ALIVE.

Cream the Rabbit being able to keep up like Tails or anybody else does, doesn't change that.

Tails's actions are those of a responsible homeowner and provider. He's the "little brother" who's more of a fucking adult than the actual adult in the relationship. Sonic is the one with the maturity of a child, running from any responsibility, while Tails is the one keeping the lights on. Cream is the one who needs to be taken care of by an actual parent. Cream is the one who gets scared easily and constantly needs help.

The only time Tails is a "helpless kid" is when the writing is absolute dogshit and they need to flanderize him into a crying coward to make Sonic look good. Also, Charmy Bee was stated in Chaotix to be the fastest insect in the world as well, and he is still very clearly super-fast because flying around at high speeds is his whole thing. So that's the worst example you could have picked.

Regardless, Cream is nearly as fast as Sonic, just like Tails is, and Amy is, and Knuckles is. Cream does the same things Tails does since the classics. Not having the specific trait of being a super-genius doesn't make her any less capable, she's still smart for her age regardless because of being the disciplined type, and is able to keep up as I've pointed out already.

Cream isn't any less of a kid or a hero than Tails is, or vise versa.

In all the Classic games Tails disdains Any and leaves her behind because she’s not mature enough to help unlike him. In Adventure 2 he tells her to stay away because Tails needs to protect her and she’s not fit to help unlike him. In X both Tails and Amy have to BABYSIT Cream. In Battle Amy has to babysit Cream again. Amy has never been portrayed more mature than Tails is or a mentor figure, she is written the exact same as he is and if anything less mature than Tails is.
Cream is also never mentored or encouraged, she is discouraged and told to stay behind because she’s not good enough to help. In Rush she gets kidnapped and Tails even babies her and tells her to get away from Blaze because she doesn’t know what she’s doing. Then they all have to save her. Cream never assists in Rush unlike Tails, only gets kidnapped and cries and has to get rescued by Blaze, she’s not a sidekick. Same in Sonic Channel, and Battle, and Shadow 05, Cream’s role isn’t to be a sidekick it’s to be a little baby who gets kidnapped, who Sonic has to rescue and who gets told she’s not old or mature enough to come.
Sonic even tells her to her face in Sonic Channel she is too much of a little baby to come along or help him on adventures, and he is vindicated for it when she tries to, pussies out, cries and admits at the end that le Sonikku is right and that she’s still not ready to fight anyone yet or help. That has never, ever, been a problem for Tails.

Tails is part of the group that reacues, coddles and babysits Cream and Amy. Cream is part of the group that only gets told to stay behind because they only see her as a helpless little baby.

Tails is my favorite character, but you sound offended that Cream of all people is being compared to him. That's ridiculous, because Cream very much IS supposed to be a female equivalent to Tails and his role. Cream in Sonic Advance 2 is no different from Tails in Sonic 2. She's fast, strong, skilled, capable, has helped defeat Eggman and his robots, fought to save her mother and Chocola, was a valuable member of Team Rose, had an entire training arc all about overcoming her aversion to "violence", and so on.

The root of what you're trying to say is like "Cream could never be on Tails' level" which is just flat-out false, given how she's been handled in the games she's playable in.

I was saying in the other thread that Cream shouldn't be in the Core 4 because she's just Tails again but female, because that is ENTIRELY what she is, and she should NOT be given this much disrespect from you. She is to Amy, as Tails is to Sonic. And is even more like Tails than Amy is like Sonic, as well.

Cream being a polite little girl under the strict discipline of her mother only reinforces the same exact personality traits that she shares with Tails. If I were to assign MBTI personality types to everyone, Tails and Cream would both be ISFJ because their personalities and traits are THAT cognitively identical. Of course, they aren't literally 1:1 the exact same character, but that's not the point. I'm not a "reductionist" either. I analyze the connections and patterns between things, that's all.

I WISH Tails would become Nightwing now. That is exactly what I WANT. But, it has yet to ACTUALLY happen. He is 100% still Robin. He's barely Teen Titans Robin, as of now. First, he needs to actually reach THAT level of simply being the Leader character who can not only do things entirely on his own, but also lead an entire cast of characters all following HIM. I fully believe that should be the next step for Tails. But regardless, Tails is still "Robin" level. The adventure games were both pushing him out of Sonic's shadow, yes, but that itself isn't full graduation to Nightwing-tier.

That is just the honest truth, from the same guy who wants to see Tails pierce the heavens and be like Simon. Actually, using Gurren Lagann as the reference point, Tails has experienced the equivalent of Kamina's death and defeating Lordgenome, but he has NOT experienced the middle section between those two points where Simon became the new leader of Team Dai-Gurren. That's what Tails is missing, before he can fully become Nightwing.

Tails is my absolute favorite character of all time, across all of fiction, and his character archetype is also my personal favorite as well, and Cream is exactly that archetype. Saying she isn't is just ignoring how she's actually been presented in the games. She very much is an analogue for Tails, as that's what she's designed to be for Amy and Team Rose. How well that's been handled is beside the point, I have my own criticisms on that.

But Cream shouldn't be disrespected this much. Tails may be my favorite character, but I don't understand how much some of you guys just either don't care for or outright despise the other characters in the series.

Tails did that in SA1. He saved an entire city by himself. That was his graduation. The fact that he still helps Sonic doesn't negate that, just like Nightwing still helps Batman.


The only reason you think he's still "Robin" is because you're conflating the character's actual arc with the dogshit, inconsistent writing that has actively regressed him for the past decade. We all know he's been turned into a gutless coward in recent games, but that's a problem with the writing, not a reflection of his actual character status. You're arguing semantics like a fucking pedant. Who gives a shit if he "crashes there once in a while" versus "all the time"? The point, which flew right over your head, is that Tails *has* a home with workshops and resources, while Sonic is a "free-spirited" bum. I call Tails "Kid Sonic", for example, to describe Tails' role in the series as simply as possible.

The terminology is just based on "Kid Flash", who is The Flash's sidekick. And the original Kid Flash, Wally West, was a big fan of The Flash when he was first introduced. He looked up to the Flash, and then when they met, the lightning bolt that struck Barry ended up striking twice and now Wally had the same abilities Barry had. And then when Barry Allen died in the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Wally had to take up the mantle of the Flash. At first, he felt like he could never measure up to Barry. But once he broke out of that mindset, he ended up proving himself to be even faster than The Flash, and now Wally West is known as the Fastest Flash across all fiction redefining "super speed" so heavily that people believe he could solo any universe.

In short, "Kid Flash" is introduced as a Tails-like character for The Flash, and goes through an arc of breaking out of the Flash's shadow, becoming his own man, and then fully surpasses the original Flash. So when I call Tails "Kid Sonic", I am referring to this basic archetype. The prime example of that archetype being Robin.

I'm not saying that Tails is literally just Sonic as a kid, or that his entire character is just a copy of Sonic but as a child or however else "Kid Sonic" could be misconstrued. I'm also not implying Tails is literally 1:1 with Wally West or any other example I may refer to. Tails is Tails, and he personally is my favorite character because of who Tails is on his own.

When I compare Cream to Tails, I am comparing Cream to this same overall archetype as well as analyzing the overlapping traits shared between Cream and Tails themselves. Because they are very similar. But most of that seems to be glossed over with Cream because a lot of people just view her as a helpless baby, which is just outright false. It feels the same as when someone says that about Tails. So, I defend her as well.

Sure, in my head, I always compare Tails' Speed Highway to the entire "What's Up Danger" sequence from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and Tails vs the Egg Walker to stop the missile is like Miles fighting Kingpin and officially introducing himself as the new Spider-Man... which COULD be seen as the same as a Nightwing graduation...

But even still, no. Because it's still missing the key point I was actually highlighting: Tails hasn't fully become a "Leader". The closest is how SA2 handles him, sort of. But even then, that's mostly just Sonic & Tails doing business as usual on the adventure, with Tails making plans because he's the smart guy. What Tails actually needs in order to truly "graduate" is to become a Leader that an entire team is rallying behind and following, just as they would otherwise with Sonic. Tails needs to fulfill the position of "Sonic" not only as the one to defeat Eggman, but the one that inspires and leads an entire team of heroes into that battle.

Tails needs to go from "Robin: Batman's Sidekick" to "Robin: Titans Leader" before he can truly become Nightwing. Even Miles in the Spider-Verse movie I was referencing becomes a Leader of sorts during the entire battle sequence at the end. Simon becomes the new leader of Team Dai-Gurren after Kamina's death. Tails needs to become a leader of his own.

Also:

Tails has workshops because he's a boy genius archetype, so he needs a place to do tech stuff in and keep all his stuff. Sonic is supposed to be a genuine nomadic world traveler, not some "bum". Hence why most games take place in entirely new continents or locations, and Tails has "workshops" all over the place as a result since he has to be here as well.

I honestly can't help but wonder, how much of Lanolin as a character was planned, and how much was the result of audience reaction?

There's a part of me that feels the part of her that got carried away with the whole leader thing wasn't planned, that they caught on people weren't thrilled with the idea of an inexperienced nobody going full-Willow mode and decided to run with that (considering that's the reason Starline was made genuinly fruity, because Ian noticed there were positive reactions to the idea) to the point the exaggerated depictions ended up becoming canon. Even her weak "apology" and admittance that she has no experience at the thing she immediately volunteers for afterwards feels like it's agreeing with the reader perception of her.

At the same time, I'm left wondering if Lanolin's plot was a good idea in the first place. Considering that Sonic can't really be "wrong" in the first place, her whole "we're doing things the RIGHT way" gimmick never had a chance to go anywhere, but at the same time her turning into Mimic's patsy and becoming an annoying self-righteous cunt wasn't good either. I'm not sure what the point was in the end, or if the intent changed somewhere down the line, I feel the journey of how they got there is potentially more interesting than the character herself.

The truth that people don't want to accept is that Cream completely ruined Amy's character

Amy was consistent between Sonic CD up until SA2. The moment Cream was introduced is when Amy went from a sweet delicate girl who wants to protect others to an angry weirdo completely obsessed with Sonic for comedic purposes. And it's all Cream's fault since she was created to be Amy's sidekick, and they needed to establish a dynamic with the two. So they gave Amy's previous delicate traits to Cream and made Amy easily irritable and irrational, something that simply wasn't present in pre Sonic Battle games

Now some people will defend Amy in stuff like X, Battle and Rush, by claiming that during this time she was going through a character arc and getting physically stronger. But Amy's abilities during this time period are nothing but a shoehorned attempt at making her capable, since she isn't special when compared to the other animal characters as she wasn't originally designed with gameplay in mind. Giving her a hammer was a good idea, as it could serve as a way to make Amy compensate for her shortcomings and make her more unique compared to the other characters that have natural abilities. But you can't simply make her considerably stronger than most other characters and explain it away through some "training hard" bullshit. And making Amy strong ultimately contributed to her negative perception of being an angry spaz, as by that point Amy's delicate nature was pretty much gone and given to Cream

Even after Cream was considered a flop and shelved up until recently, Amy was still portrayed as easily irritable in Sonic Riders and subsequent entries. It's no wonder why people hated Amy back in the 2000s. Sure, American fans were already iffy on the character since SA1 as some felt she was "replacing" Sally, but the hatred towards her really only started to pick around 2004 onwards. And it makes sense because 2000s Amy basically was an in universe lolcow

Tails is a victim of bullying who latches onto Sonic because he desperately wishes he could be "cool" too. Being bullied so much caused him to have a low self-esteem so he fails to recognize his own self-worth, what he can actually do, especially since he's always measuring himself against SONIC THE HEDGEHOG. Always referring to everyone by their proper title, always doing what she's told, always being kind and respectful, etc. And also, very pacifistic with a strong aversion to violence. She doesn't like fighting, she doesn't enjoy "hurting people". Because that's how she was raised, and she's just that kind and caring of a person. The way I see it, this makes it all the more important that she's close friends with Amy, of all people. Because Amy is nothing but blind passion, enthusiasm, impulsive, allergic to "boredom". Amy lives for the thrill, she won't hesitate to throw hands and fight for what she loves. Because that's how strong her love is. And it's that same lesson that Cream had to learn in Sonic Battle when she was with Emerl. Even if she doesn't like fighting, Cream learned to fight for what she loves, to defend those she cares about.

Amy and Cream are a perfect contrast between each other. Amy is intensely loud and passionate, Cream is delicately polite and gentle. The problem lies in what you think "Passion" means.

Amy is defined by the strength of her heart. Her "LOVE" burns hotter than a thousand suns, and she wears that on her sleeve without shame. But both are as sweet as ice cream, cake and candy. Just different flavors. Cream is always on her best behavior while Amy is driven purely by the whims of her heart.

The problem is when the writers mistake Amy's passion for anger and aggression, and Cream's flavor of sweetness as the ONLY flavor of sweetness that can exist. Heavily biased towards Cream's politeness so Amy is made to look like a psycho smasher. THIS is NOT Cream's fault, it is PURELY the writers getting BOTH of them wrong.

With Cream, although the underlying kindness and compassion is identical in itself, her behavior is very strictly rehearsed and following the rules she was taught. The way that she speaks, the way that she carries herself, is less about self-expression and more about doing what she was trained to do as "the right way to behave". So her usual demeanor should appear much more cool-headed by comparison to someone like Tails or Amy whose displays of emotion or empathy are much more... I don't know what the right word is... spontaneous?

What I mean is, Tails is someone who spends so much time in his workshop that he probably doesn't take care of himself or go out that much, so when he has to interact with people, he's likely to be a bit emotionally overwhelmed but very sensitive towards wanting to be as nice to everyone as possible in a somewhat haphazardly awkward way. Cream, on the other hand, knows exactly what to say and how to say it when communicating with someone in a respectful manner.

This is true I suppose. I can not see material as canon unless it's in the main continuity games because it represents how Sega and Sonic Team want the characters to be seen by everyone. This is the default interpretation meant for fans, general audiences and children to consume. If you have to go out of your way to find information about characters not provided by the games, I can not in good faith call it canon material. Especially if it is something the staffs says, but did not implement into the final product. It may be their vision, it may be their intent, but I have to question why that intent did not make it into the final product and in some cases, the final product contradicts what they say. We've seen this plenty of times with half hazard Band-Aid explanations from Iizuka to remedy continuity errors. It just doesn't matter if the games don't reflect what he says.

I'm getting a little emotional now, so let me come back to being a little more objective for a second. Maria's illness is not as drastic as what my brother went through, but it still leaves her in a position she can not enjoy life through normal means. Shadow is her hope for survival and Shadow recognizes how important he is to her. And in turn she has always been there for him in his moments of doubt since his inception. He cares so deeply for her and he is bound by that love he shares for her. That love can be interpreted as romantic like you want since they are not biologically related, but the strength of these feelings do not have to be fueled by romance and be seen as familial in the context the games present when you understand the heavy weight of the circumstances. To be left with the void of what once was and what could've been is not easy. It's not so simple to just describe it as a young love between two opposite sexes, there's so much more at play here that I don't think it's right to assert the romantic lens so heavily just because you can not imagine siblings being that close. There are outliers, especially for a situation as unique as Shadow and Maria.
