Every time I see them pointing to someone who is actually creating something with it, don't realize and or forget that person actually has the technical skills. About 80 people so far from 4chan have played my 2D crime sandbox browser game Pixurbia. If you played it, I updated the game and made the enemy and police AI way more optimized. If it was lagging your game it should be all good now. Apologies if the lag ruined the game for you, I had the game less optimized before because it still ran great on the Windows .exe export. Just did some more testing and it runs silky smooth now.

Godot is lightweight to download and get going. It takes like less than a minute, downloading export templates a little bit longer. Sure, 3D support isn't as good as Unity, but for 2D you can start right away. Unity installation can take an hour then you still have to get the packages you want and that's not including the part where you have to get visual studio code too. Also Unity will 100% crash on the first day whereas Godot is unlikely to crash until the project gets bigger.

Made 3 new enemy ships these past few days. They're all fairly similar in the "bulbous" design as they're from a single faction, though I may take the left purple one and refit it a bit to be part of a water-based faction.
Also I submitted my steam page for review on Friday, worried it wasn't going to get approved in time to register for next fest (and it still isn't approved), but I checked anyway and it turns out I was able to register for Next Fest without needing to have the store page approved and public. So, very happy about that, as I really wanted to enter the fest.

No unreal is easily the most industry standard and will continue to be that way.
If you want a job in industry that's the way to go, if you want to make high quality 3d indie games that's they way to go. And unreal will continue to get more work done on it, and this model will keep working because only the best companies can afford to keep bottlenecks like custom engines because all of their groundwork is already in there it would end up costing more money to retrain talented senior devs while also sacrificing total control and ownership, versus just employing engine engineers to keep making improvements.
This model works internally at capcom, fromsoftware, nintendo, bethesda, etc. But a lot of these companies will hire or buy out studios that are used to a different more commercial framework, like unreal engine. for example bethesda hired a company to use unreal source code to integrate oblivion code. Making a hybrid engine/game.

There will be. I have the magic/combat systems all coded out for different cast types (over time, blast, continuous blast, summon) and I have 8 magic types with 6 fairly unique spells created for each group (so 48 spells). I still need to animate them, but that's easier than weapon animations. I'm also building it out to be multiplayer compatible for PVP/PVE. Only thing is the graphics are going to be low poly unless I can get better at art but I figure I can write it off as "charm" and have programmer art and just do a lot with particles

How do i know im actually programming that stuff correctly? As in as low level and close to the hardware as possible with absolutely no possibility for input lag? You gotta move that right knee IK target as well but I think you're making a mistake by adding leg movements to an animation like that. Personally I'd split the torso and leg movements with a layer. Full body animations will look nicer in the void but it's much harder to make them play nice in gameplay.

My free 2D crime sandbox browser game got 150 plays roughly within the first 12 hours so far. Pretty mind blowing to me, I mainly develop for fun and to vent my creative energy and this is probably more players than my first game Hellbirther ever got. I hope the people playing are having fun! I fixed the performance issues by very slightly mangling the radar and I'm about to test for a while to see if the enemy AI needs tweaking and shit. Also gonna make a trailer for the game to help get word out.

You have to go with the flow. Feeling urge to work? Put hours into project. Feeling burnt out? Play something you want so you get creative juices flowing again, even if it takes a week or some shit of relaxing in your free time instead of working on the game. Seems like there's a trend towards shorter runs. Depends on how much you want to lean into meta progression but I think it's good to provide shorter runs when the player is new. Some VS clones have explored it with the players starting on 10 minute runs and then unlocking new levels, locations or difficulties that have longer runs. The player would feel better completing a shorter easier run as a new player rather than being forced to fail because he hasn't unlocked enough meta progression yet.
I always hated how long RoR and RoR2 runs went on. The games are a lot of fun but it feels like I wasted the entire day when I play them.

That's a good point. I think it is at least part of the reason they're so popular nowadays. I've gotten used to getting my socialization through text but I do miss the times we'd play random games with my friends. It's so hard to get anyone to play anything new nowadays.

The only major issue with UI design is trying to account for window resizing.
That's like anti-soul; all the best, most fun, interesting UIs were designed for static resolutions for a good reason because you could use raster graphics and animations for everything.
I've considered pulling the pretentious indie card and having one set aspect ratio and just filling in the sides with banner art like you sometimes see in ported retro game frontends. Nuclear Throne did that IIRC.

Okay, I'm going to take the dialogue choice UI feedback into consideration. Looks like the opinions are evenly divided. The arrow is animated and moves horizontally but I don't feel like making a .webm now. I'm going to bed.
While I'm at it I'm going to share another progress post. I tweaked a couple of the outfits that I wasn't satisfied with, mainly the sweater.
Now it properly exposes the shoulders (which was a nightmare to rig) and I redid most of it so it fits the player's body way better.

I always found the Red Orchestra/Rising storm series to be interesting because aiming was a bit different. Now, it still allows you to pop heads but it's less of a consideration in the gameplay design. The guns sway a lot when you're moving about meaning that it's not always aiming at the center of the screen and you don't have a crosshair unless you're aiming down sights forget if this was a server/game mode setting and taking aiming down sights takes a moment. It had this really nice mix of realism in it that most FPS don't and it did without going straight into ARMA sim autism that feels jank most of the time.
I can't get myself to work on my game more than a couple of hours a day. And it's not like I'm doing anything else. I'm forever unemployed and I've earned income I can live on from games, so in theory I should be highly motivated to work a lot more.
And yet...
Does anyone have any productivity/motivation brain hacks?

Create a list of tasks you need to accomplish. This helps me stay productive. Muster up the discipline to complete at least one task, and the momentum of that productivity will allow you to continue accomplishing more.

I actually made a mixed methodology between waterfall and scrum lol. I use it as my thesis back in college years. Basically the idea is 4 big steps done waterfall-ly

>Production stage, resulting an alpha build

But those 4 steps are filled with sub-steps, that are done in an agile-Scrum manner. But agile enough so that needed design changes are possible, for a team working full remotely

Unlike just some random list, you list stuff you wanna do first, and then list stuff you want to do later, after specific list has been done. It was made like that so you can independently work solo, even inside a team, and can trace your "list progress" if you want to erase/add feature to your game mid development

A hopelessly scope maxxed idea is easy to manage and understand because everything is laid out in a large area and its easy to see problems ahead of time. if your idea is small and deep and has a lot of permutations the core of the idea has to be incredibly resilient because there's no pacing or other loopy game-play tricks to keep it running the entire deep philosophy of the game logic has to be so entertaining you don't get tired of it.
Lastly I find a lot of these games are a little too fun and also soulless. Like civ. Just one more turn. I grew up with them and I feel the pull of starting a new game, trying to make my perfect little towns, etc. but in terms of providing me a meaningful and memorable experience it all kind of blurs together. I couldn't actually tell you in detail what a specific civ game I played was like despite sinking 10s of thousands of hours into the franchise. On the other hand ocarina of time. It's definitely not small and deep. It's a very hand held experience crafted with narratives and cutscenes but it made an incredibly life long impression on me. It's systems are semi shallow and designed for beginners but it was because it was designed like that that I love it. and Likewise with Kirby another fan favorite, designed by someone who grew up playing arcade games that twisted you by the balls, was my first video game. Sometimes deep is good but not always.

Do it if your game is 2D and if you have a CS background. It is far easier than low IQs whine about. Use a library like SDL, raylib, etc. to handle windows and input. Use OpenGL for rendering. Get a tilemap or some shit running in a day or two if you're new.

I like full anti aliased Alpha blending, but if these are small particles, probably Alpha Scissor is good enough. as it is a quad with a transparent texture, MSAA settings won't help it. I kinda want the user to be able to drag a slider in the options menu and set all particle effects to use true alpha vs just alpha scissor.
So I made my own extension of StandardMaterial3D (Called StandardMaterial3DOptions here) which just overrides the standard and it checks the options menu setting and then checks the various properties and if they are enabled it sets them to the level specified in the config menu
Because the overrides get applied in _init(), I think that means you'd have to restart the game for them to take effect. But now I think about it, I could have them register with an options changed signal and then they could re-apply. I just hope that registering with a signal doesn't keep a reference around to them stopping them from being GC seeing as this is the material being used for particle effects... I'm sure it'd be fine.

For Blender learn the tools. Learn the hotkeys for those tools. I don't have a video tutorial to recommend but maybe there's some basic ones out there. You need to grasp the basics of how 3d modeling is done and what kind of tools you use to make it happen. A lot can be done with extruding(E), grabbing(G) and scaling(S). X Y Z control the axis locks when you have a tool active that uses them. 1 2 3 control the select mode for vertices/edges/faces. Alt clicking will try to select a loop. That's like the very basics.
Once you got a handle on the basics you could for example take an AI generated model and build a new model using it as reference. Like have the model there centered in your view and make a new object and model a new model on top of it with a lower polycount.

You can use Hudmaker Ultra and Moghunters stuff to make a really slick UI compared to the detail RPGmaker one.
Then you can grab a layer plug in to create a depth sorting system to give it some solid functionality.
My game is isometric and the movement system was an absolute nightmare at first but at the end I only needed about 5 plugins. Fear and Hunger has about 120 I think

I found that box modelling "clicked" for me once I started modelling from planes instead of boxes and just spamming extrude/merge and knife cut construction. The odd inset or extrude/scale.
It was just way easier to get the shapes I wanted than trying to carve a box into the right form. And you do all that shit for retopo anyway so as long as you remember to recalculate normals who gives a fuck.
Seen people get really good results by working with subdivided primitives with smooth shape modifiers and immediately retopoing.

I personally don't even bother with the brush for rigging, it's worthless for low-poly. Go into edit-mode, select the vertexes you want to paint, back to weight paint, hit the "vertex mask" button, it's next to mode select, and just gradient tool that shit at the exact strength you want. Takes all of the frustration and guesswork out and is honestly much faster.
Honestly even for highpoly it's probably better. Fuck the brush. Fuck auto-weights too, empty groups every day.

What sort of genre appeals to you? Animations don't have to be perfect for the game to be fun. If you look at most RTS zoomed in they will look pretty crappy, the bird's eye view helps hide a lot of the faults/lack of detail.
You can get away with reusing models and animations by changing their color or slapping a different hair/helmet object on their head.
Just get something vaguely presentable and then quickly move on to the gameplay. You can make it prettier later

well when you press the key it's reading values for 18 frames before it goes back to 0 since it's not a keydown event but an axis read and it's got to do with how long you press the key and how long your pc takes to register that you let go of the key
now you know so build your logic for reading the value based on that

I understand I have to get more experience, but, what should I do? Keep following tutorials or read books about game development? I really don't know what I a doing, I understand what I am doing when it comes to BPs etc, but I created these games with only visual scripting language from Unreal. Do most games use little to no C++? (I know C++ already) but don't know what to do in Unreal

If you want to get good the proper way is to learn to read documentation and the principles behind each discipline that you are taking on in your project. I'm talking about looking up expert information from academic sources. It'll slow down your workflow but you'll learn how to focus on exactly what you need and learn what your tools actually are

you're setting the clock to -1 and move true so it follows into the next if and resets the clock so it keeps doing it every update until movevec is zero
looks like you're trying to make blobber style movement so try something like
moveDelay = 1f;
update
{
moveTimer -= time.deltatime;
if (movevec != zero && movetimer <= 0)
moveTimer += moveDelay;
//move
this way you'll move one step every moveDelay as long as the key is held
and you'd probably wanna add some lerping in the actual move logic so it's not instant

and you probably wanna set the moveTimer to 0 if movevec is zero and timer is below zero just to make sure it's consistent when you start moving again
the add and subtract operations work well when you're holding the key because it accounts for tiny overflow from deltatime

I was trying to figure out the Enhanced Input Action System, as the tutorial I was following required messing with input mappings, but the old input mapping system was marked as deprecated. So I figured that, okay, I'll learn the new system and then adapt things to suit it. Simple, right? Well, the Enhanced Input Action System doesn't work out of the box. They require something to be added to the EventGraph for that. But just adding what you want to add isn't enough, because adding that breaks the default. And so you need to add all control groups to that block you made. But then you realize that the Enhanced Input Action system fucking sucks and doesn't actually support what you needed to use it for in the first place.

I not the guy you marked, but most engines already handle this, you can basically use a template for a game and it will work, you can do that by using visual scripting language as well, when I made pong using unreal, I used a node to set the location based on the key the user press
