Slotting in a 3rd ace instead of a debuffer gives me worse results. I guess even if people have enough stam, a debuffer is still good because enough to finish =/= enough to start accelerating asap. So their final spurt gets delayed, meaning some of the SS gets wasted i guess? It's either that or the velocity debuff having that much of an impact.

Is there a really good must have pace chaser skill, like groundwork or straightaway spurt?

I got through to Group A but have been getting absolutely decimated in Round 2.
Fully expected, mind you given being F2P (But very lucky horsegirl-wise).
Guess I've got 3 more attempt tomorrow to make a golshi that can pull through because I have yet to see anyone win except for her and the 5-head from the swimsuit card.
Shame too because I really feel the whale-element here. If I (or anyone really) had the cards, you could build a much better horse much more consistently and spend time crafting strategies instead of sticking to the pre-defined meta, however solved it may be. We made it to Grade A in the open league! Our current strategy is to have my late surgers go for the win if they're lucky and gold ship jumps in front of everyone at the end of the race and body blocks everyone's Ace runners.
They all have one spark parents because they're just from beating the URA Finale but to my surprise they're holding their own just enough to keep advancing!

I queued a few hours ago and got destroyed 4/15. Just queued and got 3/5 (and I lost the first by only a neck too.)
The opposition wasn't actually worse, in fact I ran into one of those eden guys. I just got a lot luckier.
Earlier I fired spurt less than half the time and didn't even get 2 heals off several times despite 500 wit. In my last run I got spurt 4 times and 2 heals 4 times. I actually won the one time I didn't hit spurt, one time spurt was pretty useless because I died from 0 heals, and the other time I just got stomped by a megawhale.

Best I can really hope for in A finals is 2nd, if I get a good matchup... only way I can win is with insane luck matching against the weakest possible opponents, or some crazy blocking action. Or if I somehow roll a better ace in the next couple of days.

I would honestly treat CM as getting some carats for a future spark and not care too much about PvP in a gacha game. Gacha PvP is simply terrible and while Umamusume does have some leeway with actual knowledge it also includes so much RNG on top of RNG that if you are missing parts that help with RNG in general, you'll have a much better time.
I gave up on CM as the grind is simply a recipe for burnout and I'm also just too lazy to keep up with all the information and skills and tracks and parents and farming for sparks and the list goes on with how much preparation you want to do with CM events. I started late, didn't reroll (my first gacha so I didn't know what I was doing), so I also have crap for cards and don't even have that special week speed card which is much better than my alternatives for a third card. Beating people with stronger decks is painful but satisfying.
Sadly, I think mile CM will be even harder for f2p because it's easier to build for. I think long CMs are actually easier with poor decks because so many people have bad builds, so with some skill and the right team mix you can compete.
