I used to be more closed off about this stuff, back when I thought sticking to "traditional" roles was the way, but seeing how the Western creators have infused heart and inclusivity into the stories opened my eyes. The IDW comics, for example, handle characters with depth that the JP side sometimes glosses over, adding layers that make everyone feel seen. Non binary rep isn't some forced agenda, it's a natural extension of Sonic's world where animals talk, run at supersonic speeds, and form bonds beyond outdated binaries. It's regressive to hate on it, because that mindset is inherently oppressive, anti freedom, and anti progress. Sonic wouldn't support a party that shuns and erases people for something as simple as living their truth. "Sonic hates oppression" means "Sonic defends the marginalized", which is why he'd stand up for anyone targeted just for being themselves. If you try to forcefully silence or erase non binary identities, no matter how "traditional" you claim to be, Sonic would be against you. And exclusion and denial is all bigots know how to do. What if Sonic was reimagined with continuity in mind? Where characters and settings are foreshadowed, set up and have satisfying payoffs to their arcs? What if the status quo of the world enabled interesting and diverse stories, where any of the major heroic characters could be the protagonist of their own tale?

One year ago, a marvelous hero emerged from the ether. His name? Sonic. Sonic the Hedgehog. Inspiring them with his free nature and spirit. He's like the wind, a gust that comes by and sweeps the world off its feet in his wake.

When Sonic arrives, nothing is the way it was before. For better or worse, but most who've encountered him would certainly say for the better. That is... Besides the dastardly ne'er-do-wells that Sonic the Hedgehog has bested time and time again. Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, an industrialist whose intellect is only matched by his greed and desire to see the masses march to the beat of his industry. Dr. Starline, a mad witch doctor who seeks the esoteric powers of a bygone 'god' to bring about his vision for the world. And last but certainly not least... 'President' Julian Robotnik, the leader of the self-proclaimed Acorn Republic, a fascist dictator hellbent on subjugating the Acorn continent to his whims and weaponizing his brother's invention of robotization to bring about his ideal 'utopia'. Though, it's no secret that he has no plans of stopping there... His ambition is far grander.

Because the "Tails" of Union being a female character is fan appeal to fans of Tailsko and I don't want there to be a child tagging along with Sonic since Union Sonic is 24 years old. It's part of Union's simplification of ages.
Tails is also commonly interpreted as a feminine character, including by his creator Totoya-sama, I don't see the issue with making the "Tails" of Union Patty. Patty who is a journalist who documents Sonic's adventures. I think it's cute and allows for a unique new dynamic.
There is an equivalent of Miles Prower called MIles Fox who is Fiona Fox's younger brother but he has no relationship with Sonic. He's somewhat inspired by Nine.

Since it allows Amy to have a familial relationship with Eggman which strengthens themes of the story I want to tell and it's consistent with the original Madonna concept from JP SegaSonic. Sonic the Hedgehog likes human women.

There's more to Tails than being a "kid brother sidekick". Tails in the games has been more than that for awhile. Tails is Sonic's best friend and partner who can fly with his two tails, fix planes, and helps Sonic navigate the planet. Patty still fulfills that role.

It is a merging of canons. It takes numerous ideas from different continuities and recontextualizes them. Even Tails being a female was canon in some regions, such as the spanish dub of AoSTH. Union takes elements from existing continuity and remixes them into something new but hopefully recognizable and appealing to Sonic fans

That role has became increasingly redundant in modern Sonic media (with several depictions depicting Tails as more akin to Sally Acorn than a 'kid brother' figure). Tails in Union exists to be Sonic's adventuring buddy who can fly with her two tails, has a sweet and sometimes shy personality (much like Tails), a journalist who documents Sonic's adventures (like Shogakukan's Patty), provides Sonic with vehicles and the resources to continue his adventures (much like Tails in Unleashed), and is a pilot.
Union Amy is still a kind-hearted woman who is inspired by the wind and wants to be like Sonic and wants to adventure and desires to explore the world.

I believe in creative freedom. But, true creative freedom can only genuinely exist if the original source material of any idea is properly respected and authentically represented no matter what the permutation or alteration that may exist elsewhere.

The very core fundamentals of an idea, the very thing that defines it as "it", should never be changed. Ever. With that as the solid ground everyone is walking on, than everyone is free to come up with new ideas to build on that foundation and take it in any new direction.

There's many different adaptations of Batman and Spider-Man and others, but there is always an overarching consistency of what "Batman" or "Spider-Man" fundamentally is, no matter what form they take. With Sonic, previous adaptations took so many creative liberties that in many cases, Sonic wasn't even "Sonic" anymore. And as a result, the overarching idea of what "Sonic the Hedgehog" IS becomes tarnished.

You shouldn't change Sonic into something he's not. The same applies to every other character across the franchise. And this in and of itself should not "inhibit" creativity. Every idea has limitless possibilities, so why REPLACE an idea with a different one and pretend it's the same thing?

I genuinely am disheartened to the reception I receive here from Sparky. With Krack, I know her hatred is performative and as fake as her personality. With Sparky, it feels genuinely strangely personal. It hurts to put so much time and effort into something and just have it shat on by the thread because it's not the same as canon when it's not trying to be.
I don't even know how to react to these critiques since they're entirely unrelated to the creative process behind making it. I never asked the questions being poised in this thread by someone like Sparky since making it exactly like the games was never the point. Having the same character roles as the current continuity was never the point.

They go too far at times, but they're legitimately just having fun in their own way.
