There's been a lot of hype around Uma Stan, but none of it made any sense to me, and I was running around desperately trying to understand why it's a must-have. Here's the results of my research:

First, the idea that it generally "blocks pace down" is nonsensical. For the unaware, during the first 40% of the race, the game checks if you are too close to the leader every 2 seconds and puts you into "pace down mode" if you are, which is bad. If a speed skill is active during a pace down check, the check is skipped, which is good! But it's weird to think that any speed skill could prevent pace down in general, since there are 17 pace down checks in Virgo (for example) and proccing the skill will block a mere two or three of them. Even if you proc the skill and block some checks, you'll still probably be too close to the leader after it ends and still enter pace down.

The idea that Uma Stan could be part of a chain of skills that can permanently stop pace down throughout the whole first 40% is similarly ridiculous. This isn't the 2025 JP server. Just from watching your own races, you should know that having a speed skill permanently active is a pipe dream.

However, it turns out that the reason Uma Stan is good is because of a very specific early race interaction. Here is a video that explains the concept and shows real examples (though you'll need to use auto-translated CCs to follow along): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qj6i5pN5F7Y

Basically, in the early race, everyone other than front runners enter pace down as a matter of course because they're too close to the leader (duh). That means everyone is going 0.915x their normal early race speed. After pace down is over because the leaders have gotten far enough away from you, you start accelerating to your normal early race speed.

Uma Stan is likely to activate precisely at the 5 second mark since that's the earliest it can proc and everyone will be bunched up at that time. And if it procs during the pace down period, you will exit pace down. Your uma will then accelerate to their normal early race speed while everyone else is languishing in pace down.

But doesn't that mean that you'll be too close to the leader once the skill ends, putting you right back into pace down? Not necessarily. The leader is going to be faster than you during your acceleration, so she'll still be getting further ahead. It's quite possible that you will be safely far away once the skill ends.

Whether all this will actually happen depends on the track. After all, the length of a track dictates the distance you have to be away from the leader to avoid pace down. The video I linked above opines that tracks of 2000m or more are good for this pace-down-avoidance strategy—but when that video was made, umas had >1200 power, so the situation was different. Perhaps Uma Stan will be good for Virgo despite it being 1600m.

Another way Uma Stan can be reliably powerful is if you have an additional speed skill that will reliably trigger at the very start of the race. Acceleration skills don't work for this, so Groundwork is no good. The youtube video above uses the 1,500,000 CC skill as an example. That skill will reliably proc on the first hill you reach, which is at the very beginning of the course for some tracks. Therefore, you can proc 1,500,000 CC to stop pace down, then proc Uma Stan to keep avoiding pace down. But this strategy is obviously track-dependent due to hill placement.

You don't need guides and you don't need to fan grind. I only do runs like this cause I'm in an S rank club, you can get in an A+ club with 30 million fans a week, that's easily achieved by just playing everyday.

For fan runs ideally you want a Summer Maru because she has a lot of recoveries and a good unique and no forced long race wins but there are a lot of horses you can get 1 million fans with.
Get as much fan bonus as you can, train Speed, when you have enough Speed start racing and never stop. Usually I start after the 1st inspiration because the stat boost helps me win.

I've been playing after CM3 every day.
I never let my energy waste. I've put a lot of thought and effort into making umas for CM4.
What I got? Nothing.
One month of literally no result.
I haven't got a single medium S good horse with good stats. Every time, in every run, that seems good, something bad happens. Something that has near 0 odds, but it still happens to me. Every time.
Result? I could barely get to 2nd stage, but in 2nd stage, 4 attempts - 5 losses each.
And then I regularly scroll through this thread and CM room results.
Everyone is having fun. Everyone has S aptitude horses. Or at least S turf. Not me though. I'm just not allowed to have fun and enjoy putting effort into something. Even my parents run. You might not believe me, but I had 0 white sparks umas 4 times in a row with like almost every G1 win and 16+ skills.

I am done. I can't play this any more. I can't just get failure after failure and pretend that I am okay while everyone is getting what I wanted. And with future updates, the ceiling will be even higher, and I can't reach even remotely close to the current one.
