I have a job that pays hours on the job, and mileage to and from the site. The hours on the job are always right, but the mileage... not so much. It's not enough for me to quit, but I'm looking at it.

As far as mileage goes, how are they paying it? Based on actual miles, based on travel time, or a combination? Cause it would be really fucked if you traveled 20 miles, but, like here, it takes you at least a couple hours, and they only pay you the actual miles.

The first job I went NCNS on was on 2001-09-12. Good times. :D

What they *say*, is that they pay the Google Maps mileage, minus the first 25 miles. If the spot is 26 miles away, then I get paid for 27 miles. If the spot is 100 miles away, then I get paid for 175 miles. The actual calculation comes out lower than that, though.

Some of the miles also involve a toll road, and I'm supposed to get paid for that, but I haven't figured out if I am or not.

That company was trying to die anyway. They laid off a bunch of people in spring 2001, and there were persistent rumors that they were going to lay off more. My CEO got nine felony convictions and all I got was an old laptop. :D

The traffic time really isn't that bad. This isn't a major metro area, like NYC, LA, Seattle, Chicago, etc. The turnpike (where the tolls are) pretty much moves at 70-80 mph.

They pay me separately for "hours on site" and "mileage", so I can figure the tolls. If "mileage" divided by "cents per mile" comes out to more than I would expect, then I'm being paid for the tolls. If not, I'm not.

On 9/11, I had one of these new-fangled cable modem thingys. My browser was set to a "top headlines" page. It wouldn't load at all. Even though the lights were green, I power-cycled the cable modem. (I had it for about 6 months, and sometimes, you just had to power-cycle it to get it to work.) I still couldn't get the headlines page to load.

I flipped over to the stock-marker page, and that page kind of loaded - text, but no images. In the spot where it usually had the Dow Jones and NASDAQ readings, it said "Stock markets closed due to attacks in New York." I went out to the TV and turned on CNN and saw it.

Yes I am in Texas. Roasting potatoes in the oven? Par boil them first, cut in half, toss together with salt, black pepper, minced garlic, olive oil, rosemary, and thyme then bake them at, like 400ºF. Now, if you're frying potatoes then what you'll want to do is cut the potatoes then soak them for a few hours in a mix of water and vinegar to pull all the starch out.
