He never really got popular until well after his death. I don't think people were ready for his specific brand of weirdness. A lot of great musicians have that happen to them.hell, Beethoven, who was recognized as a genius, had that happen to his late string quartets. He composed them and everyone thought they were incomprehensible gobbledygook. It wasn't until, like, a decade after he died that folks looked at them again and realized how great they actually were.
