I find it funny how the “you are a monster no longer” line makes no sense when you find out where it came from. Kratos only said it to Athena’s ghost saying he’s a monster. He specifically says, “I know. But I am your monster no longer.” He knows he’s a monster but he’s not under her or the gods’ control anymore. So him lecturing Asura on being a monster no longer would basically be implying Asura was under the control of some god when that was never the case in Asura’s game while it was in Kratos’. DB just had no fucking clue what they were referencing. So all the “you are a monster” memes are basically Kratos just projecting his insecurity for being the gods’ attack dog.

I actually thought the animation for Kratos vs. Asura was good. I know a lot of people had problems with it, but I thought it was great.

Even if you disagree about Asura losing, given the power gap between the two it makes sense for Kratos to take little damage. It also put Kratos in some kind of a mentor or elder role to Asura, and let Kratos show how far he had come by defeating someone who had been down the same path as him. He wasn't just fighting Asura, he was TEACHING Asura. And I think that's very heartwarming in a way. That Kratos would take the lessons he learned and help someone who was just like him.

If this weren't a Death Battle I'm sure they would have ended cordially and taught each other well. The alternate ending is weird, even if heartwarming in its own way. It was nice to see Kratos reunite with his daughter, but it feels weird to have him just stand there and take that punch.

I haven't played Asura's game though (but after watching this fight I think I might watch a playthrough!) so I might be missing stuff but as a big GoW fan I thought they did Kratos justice and from what I saw they treated Asura with the utmost respect. What character has ever gotten an alternate ending made just for them?

The longer I think about it, the more I wished Asura wasn’t matched up with a brick wall of a fighter like Kratos who basically just wasted any potential of a fun and interesting fight as much as the shit powerscaling. 99% of the entire fight was Asura carrying every major motion, with Kratos’ only notably move was just stealing Asura’s iconic feat from his game.
Like shit, Asura is an incredibly flexible, adaptable fighter with an interesting polyhedric and acrobatic fighting style. He had a move where he used all six of his arms to lock up Evil Ryu in the crossover fight and broke the guy’s balls over his knee. Asura’s fights with Yasha just shows what seemed like basic brawling moves on the surface can keep up with high displays of martial arts.
Kratos just feels like he stood there the entire fight and the only notable damage he did to Asura was just spamming the Draupnir spears and the Blade of Olympus at the end. The two had no interesting fight chemistry at all. Hell, Kratos’ first fight with Baldur looked like it put more effort with Kratos fighting than DB did with him.

That definitely would’ve been retardkino but it only partly solves the problem which I think the matchup was mainly screwed the moment they revealed they were using Norsetos. I think Greektos’ more aggressive style would’ve fit the pace of the fight. Norsetos just feels incredibly sluggish to look at and his fighting style is mainly just standing there, tank, and punch back. It’s just really slow and makes Asura really the worse matchup for him in terms of an interesting fight since they have to slow Asura down for Kratos.
