My guess is james and mike were always supposed to fall out. Like the track team always seemed to good to be true because they looked drama free and like something of an escape from the others for Mike.

But Taeshi might have sped up the bridge burning and did it so fast that this is the biggest mark on his character. There's no real way to justify it, espcially after the speech he gave mike at the end of the movie chapter.

What if Taeshi is just a flawed and legitimately bad person who does not understand what makes an individual "good" in anything but a theoretical sense? It's pretty clear she's taken a deep dive into her own BPD and even sacrificed Lucy's plausible deniability in favor of torturing Mike just that much harder. Usually she thinks to hand her characters semi-plausible outs, but not this time. So this is James being good and fun and sympathetic according to what passes for Taeshi's moral compass, with her running damage control in the comments now that nothing can be done about it.

Paulo is such a mess and we got lucky that for some reason he's the sole character in this comic (besides Abbey but thats all been off-camera through his therapist for the most part) whos issues are actually addressed and worked on. It's actually a lot like what Lucy's physical abuse of Mike USED to be (played as a tsundere joke, because it was the style at the time), except Paulo is genuinely remorseful for it and has actively tried to do better precisely because he cares about Mike.
