How do I "just doodle" like everyone says? Whenever I start drawing, my brain immediately goes into the mode for trying to make a full art piece and nitpicks every little detail and constantly erases and re draws everything. I always treat it like I'm drawing a full fledged piece.

Should I use digital for the full fledged pieces, and just scribble the doodles on actual pen and paper?

How do I learn how to draw well fast? I want to make hundreds of these drawings over and over, and I want to be able to do more than one shitty figure per drawing session. I'm fucking tired of only being able to do a single one of these a week at most, and all of them looking like a retarded twelve year old did them.

At this rate it's going to take me a fucking decade to draw anything remotely passable. And that's not even mentioning the fact that I want to draw entire comics, and I want to make stories in a visual medium. What the fuck do I do? Is there anything that can be done about this?

Okay. Another test with microns, and I'm still terrible with lines. At least I felt like I got some way to control line weight with these that satisfy me. Noting it to not make a mess with the hair next time.
As another note, I thought the pink pen wouldn't be too dark. I was wrong.

This is kinda individual for each other. But if you are stopping 20 seconds later, it means there's something else that you do in that interval. Remove it from sight.
Pencil and paper is also good for that because it means you are gonna get of your PC for a while too.

check the degree of the ellipses in the clothes
the folds are pretty bad, and in general all the clothes feel as if they had no thickness
most of the boot horseshoes are wrong (granted, those are hard to draw in perspective)

I really don't mean to be rude, but honestly speaking, how much did you look at the reference photo when drawing this? I ask because there are mutliple parts where, even if you were a few pixles off here or there, would have roughly been able to include/leave something out even as a beginner if you had focused on your reference (a bit more closely). for instance, the vertical marks made on the side plane of the nose. there's not a particularly prominent block of value in the area in the reference, but you chose to bring out that area for some reason; and you've made it darker than the diagonal value shape to its right just under the eye, even though in reality it should be the other way around, if anything. or the length of the neck. again, I don't mean to be rude, but if you had the slightest attention payed towards the length of the neck, you would've easily been able to get it much closer to the reference photo and not elongate it such as you've done. so maybe the most obvious advice I could give is look at your references more, look at major landmarks (like the nose, which should clearly be more to the left), compare the horizontal and vertical relationship of landmarks/features (is the nose higher or lower than the ear, is the bottom of the chin to the left or right of the outside of the nose, etc).

especially the more of a beginner you are, that's to be expected. not that I'm a pro by any means, but another thing that's helped me to get through mistakes in my drawings, not being able to capture a likeness to my reference, is not to think about it as trying to be "good" in some general sense. it seems kind of obvious after you think about it, but what actually happens is that you start to suck less and less. so, as you go through a course, or a book, or whatever - assuming you're earnestly trying and pushing yourself - you'll go from, say, regularly drawing 90% shitty drawings to 85% shitty drawing. eventually, with the right focus and instruction, you'll start to regularly pass that threshold and will be making 51+% good drawings.

it's good that you're going through a course. if other anons had some pointers hopefully then can add on, but I'd say try not to get too worried if everything doesn't immediately make sense. no one goes through a head drawing course and "learns" portraiture; no one goes through a figure drawing course and "learns" figure drawing. again, with the right focus, you get a bit better, and a bit better, and a bit better. just make an earnest effort with the time you have, reflect periodically on your drawing/painting/learning processes, move on to another fundamental, repeat the process with the other fundamentals, and then at some point do some more deliberate study of them.

sticking with the "draw what's fun" advice, so here's a knight helmet. The proportions (I think I'm using that right) are a little off from the reference

i have some general questions about heads i just try to figure things out
i am using some head drawing cheat sheets plus Learn to Draw Manga Basics
my main question is what about ears and eyes?
in pic rel the realistic head has eyes and ears under sphere's "cross" but in the manga Basics they are on the line or above it
is this the general direction? eyes under for realism and on/over for manga?

I am trying the 'draw every day' thingy again because I heard it does wonders... (Here is my day 1 and day 2 I guess... I tried doing art withiut references because the only standing pose referenfes I could find were really hard to replicate and made me feel extremely self-conscious), especially since I suck at art and even with references (my last post on this sub) I still can't make anyhing that looks relatively human... since anime style lowers the eyes and shortens the chin, the anime cross is usually lower than a loomis or picrel cross

heavily stylized but not capturing the gestalt and sovl. you have to make sure thomas is angry or pissed off looking. the eyebrows are key here, even if you would draw him looking like Luigi Mario (his last name). just overall he is too long in some places making it feel off. the hat should be almost the size of the face comparatively. but hey, its not the worst, some minor fixes would get you closer to capturing patman.

I don't usually redline but here's an issue I might actually be able to solve.
I felt the placement of the head was wrong. Not off by far but still noticeable.
If we're going by the measurements in the graph there (you can have the full tutorial if you want) the ribcage is 1,5 heads tall.
I divided your ribcage into thirds, giving me the size the head should be. Then I created a basic Loomis head.
So much for the head.
Two things about the face: First, the big gap between the nose and the mouth. Bring the eyes and nose down.
Secondly, the jawline is too similar to the 'shoulder-line'. This makes the drawing flatter. Fix this by drawing a different angle.
Enough critique. I really like how you did the torso and arms and your lines are clean. I hope you finish this.

This is because you never learned how to sketch. Sketching is an activity that can be as long or as short as you want, since the end result is never really a finished piece anyway. You should be sketching a lot daily. Sometimes you should sketch as quickly as possible to test your skills, other times you should be as deliberate as possible to achieve high accuracy. By not building the foundation of being proficient at an initial sketch, every subsequent thing you do will suffer and you'll remain slow as shit. You've been given advice to do observational drawing before and this is one of the reasons why.

Have in mind that when you're doing stuff traditionally, the physical space becomes a limitation. The graphite size, the type, even the paper will influence in your result as you draw. I'm playing around a lot myself recently, bought some new pens and a brush pen too, but you can search for the correct materials to do what you precisely want if you wish, or stuck at your current method and finish it digitally later too. Your choice.

Thank you. Actually you bring up a good point about the half-tones. I think it comes from me using a grey background to reduce eyestrain and neglecting that in digital i can just add pure white on my sketches. I need to start seeing the grey background as my mid-tone, not my lightest value.

I'm also more accustomed to pencil sketching which can only get so dark. Bad habits bleed into my digital art.

I was sexualized as a minor and it feels really bad so drawing that brought up not great feelings. sometimes drawing anime boys getting hurt or kissing guys is nice and comforting, but that just felt gross and bad especially given tsukushi is a pedo. it also reminded me of my ex boyfriend's art, which was often sexualized underage characters but not even stylized. normally I'm not too phased by shota or loli due to growing up on the Internet but his drawings weren't even remotely stylized and idk I just gave pre existing things that made it uncomfortable to have drawn something that was overly sexualized

I used to do a lot of ink only drawings and had to live with my mistakes. Most of my pencil drawings don't have erase marks unless I catastrophically fuck up. I usually draw quickly to not allow my brain to restrain any expressiveness and then I live with and work around whatever mistakes I made. The problem with this is my ability to capture the likeness of something is weakened, so I'm trying to find a balanced approach.
