If you aren't using a phone or an obvious point and shoot with a tiny lens, most people will think you're a pro. They don't understand that you can buy all this shit for a couple of hundred bucks these days, they think any camera that isn't glow in the dark still costs a grand.

/vid/ - Video General
Summer's over, did you get shit done? edition

All video related questions and discussion is intended for this thread. Here we discuss techniques, gear and anything else related to capturing video footage. Please don't pretend to be an expert if you don't know what you're talking about. Kindly leave your ego at the door.
Posting short films/scripts or other work you've done is encouraged.
We tend to use and recommend DSLRs/mirrorless cameras because they provide phenomenal picture quality for their price, have large sensors (ie the same size used in high-end cinema cameras and higher) and have interchangeable lenses.
In contrast, consumer camcorders often have much smaller sensors and a fixed lens.

Quick FAQS
>what’s the best camera available on a “budget”?
The blackmagic pocket cinema camera 4k, or the Panasonic gh5 (can pick one up for like 500 bucks atm)
>what’s a good beginner video camera?
Anything that works, shoots at least 1080p and preferably has interchangeable lenses. Any recommendation beyond that will cause arguments so read the fucking sticky if that isn't satisfactory.
>What's a good sound solution that won't break the bank?
Zoom h1
>Can I use a zoom lens for video?
Yes
>Do I need cine lenses?
No
>Do I need 4k?
No. 1080 looks great on a cinema screen. 4k looks better.
>Can someone tell me if my video is any good?
Yes, but be prepared to receive harsh criticism. If you're going to waste 5 minutes of our time with a shitty out-of-focus montage of nothing then we'll tell you that it's crap
>Is it okay to dox myself?
...Personally I wouldn't but what do I know?

Know the camera like a mechanic knows a car
Three sciences about light that'll help you understand: The science of photons, electromagnetic radiation, and bosons

Two technical concepts that'll help you understand how your camera works: How computers work, how chemistry works, and how the mechanics work in a camera. (Anon here like what the fuck computers? Yes anon your digital camera is a damn computer like a smartphone is a damn computer. Hell even in some cases a calculator can be a computer. And the next what the fuck statement is about film photography which is indeed chemistry.)

Last thing is knowing how all the programming and placement of the camera functionality is in your camera. Such as knowing what the hell C4k is in a Panasonic GH5 for example.

You do all this you would know your camera like a mechanic knows a car. Congratulations you are a step ahead in being a photographer or cinematographer.

The most important part about all of this is the hardest part which is does it make sense to you like any other art form?

What creatives are actually like
Maybe nobody cares and maybe I'm dumb to be surprised but I just want to stress how unglamorous actual pro photographers - and creatives in general - are.

A lot of them are kind of losers. The image I had of photographers being cerebral, well-rounded and cultured guys has not proven to be true at all.

I work in healthcare but I run a small business doing sound engineering work. I do very specialized work recording live concerts and classical music, usually working alongside photographers/video crews. A lot of them are honestly just fucking weirdos, at some point I probably was too. It's a bit like pic-related (apologies for normie meme)

I mention this because prior to this I did much more paid photography gigs, but I got sick of it because a) the profit margins are a joke and b) I didn't fit in with the people there and they knew it. I'm not saying I'm better than them, but it was not the focused, intellectual crowd I hope for.

An anon here once saidA that he got into photo-journalism because it is a field that vagrants and ne'er-do-wells can get into and I 100% see it.

Older guys are good though, they're always helpful and polite.

ITT: YouTuber Hate
Why are photography YouTubers so shit? They mostly churn out boring nontent while dressing like a copy of a copy of a copy of someone who thought he might closet cosplay Ansel Adams. Who are they aping?
Almost all have the cadence and tone of a best buy sales associate either slowly conniving a golden HDMI cable sale or postponing their suicide on a Sunday evening only since their parents are still alive; with no in-between.
I meet smarter and more interesting people IRL at camera club or local stores, so it's not as if this hobby is exclusively for people prescribed Klonopin and SSRIs.
Half of them are just talking head slop direct to camera talking about what gear to buy (micro four nerds)
The ones that do teardowns and repairs of gear are usually fine, but those aren't exactly photo videos at that point.

The only guy that does the "video of taking photos" thing I can stand is Nick LoPresti since he doesn't talk like he's constipated, but lately the lack of constipation has become a problem since he's been diarrhea-shitting up my sub box with low-effort commentary videos sitting in front of a green screen. Idk who he's aping there, 2016 twitch? Don't like it, especially one where he and his wife are politisperging about shit like how "they can't use Google search for inane things because it'll track you" for what feels like several minutes.

Snappiness may be my second favorite even though he looks and talks like a queer (he has kids so I guess he isn't technically). At least he does ridiculous things with cameras that are more interesting than "I walked and took a photo of something and had some ennui about it".

Also, I hate gxAce with a passion, dead horse of a gimmick beaten into dust at this point. 80% of his videos serve no purpose to the modal viewer since they're just a rain-dance to the corporate marketing teams to get them to send him gear. (Also combining sloppy wet deep-throat glazing prose with an aloof tone is uniquely excruciating to listen to.)

I think it was pretty common I was able to go througg a bunch of my grandparents photos and they were using half frame cameras and 35mm. Lots of wallet sized prints.
Was looking at some prints in an old family photo album and they are not 4x6. They are a mix of 3.5 x 5 and 3.5 x 4 3/8. I believe all of them were taken on 110 film. Was it fairly common to print in these smaller sizes, or was my family just poor and got the cheapest prints available?

Zines
How does /p/ feel about zines?

They seem fun. You print your stuff, distribute it however you want, and people look at it. They might toss it in the trash but at least you made an impression.

You can make them for pretty cheap. I made some lo-fi DIY-style ones with my visual art at home using just an inkjet printer, and I've been dropping them in random places for people to find.

Anyone ever make zines?

Its not a bad slr it's pretty simple and small/lightweight, I have one that unfortunately died (pretty sure the electronics failed) it should come with the 50mm 1.8 e series lens which is a great little lens

pic related, shot on the fg-20 and the 50
Put some batteries in it, do a few tests, find a .pdf file of a manual on the net of the metering modes on the camera, get some 35mm film from amazon, take some test shots, and go to a walgreens to get pictures developed.

Absolute beginner here.
After watching tons of yt videos i decided to google best books for beginers amd on almost all sites this book pops up. *Understanding exposure how to shoot great photograps with any camera by bryan peterson*
This nigger shoots almost all his pics at f>16, a vast majority at f22 and even f32
The yt niggers told me that difraction kick in at >f11 and hould be avoided
But this nigger shoots even portrait at f8 or f11
Is this nigger crazy or the yt shills are lieing to me?
Book has very good revies and sold almost 1mil copies.
What is your take and any other good book i should look into to understand exposure and composition?

We were contemplating what trail we were going to hike (my neighborhood backs up to a large recreational/forest area with many choices) and we had decided upon one and to end the conversation she says, "And maybe you don't bring the big camera this time?" and we both laughed, with my laughter just coming from confusion and a little bit of shock for such a request. I cannot for the life of me figure out why she asked this. I seldom ever shoot with a tripod when going on casual walks with her and it never gets in the way of us having a good time, I take a few pictures every walk and throw it over my shoulder and keep going. I don't let my hobby ever get in the way of our time together. If anything she's asking to shoot with me more often.

That's why for the life of me I can't understand why she asked me to leave the rb67 at home. She loves shooting with me and is always asking questions to learn more about photography and film. I'm really not trying to sperg out about this, I guess im just trying to figure it out from a girl's pov. I can't help but think the reason she asked is purely aesthetic/visual, as if me hauling it around is unattractive or something. Is carrying this camera around on a semi-regular basis that strange or unfashionable? I really don't think its big enough of an issue to explicitly request I don't use it which is why im so confused.

big cameras can be kinda cringe sometimes. idk why but it probably gives her the ick for you to carry this huge, non-nonchalant thing around. get a ricoh grIII and she'll wanna marry you.

What's the deal with flashes? How do they help photos?

Saved, thanks.

Not a matter of quantity alone but of control, Zach. It's directing the light that counts. They let you put the light where you need it. Have a primer.
flashes are useful because then you can shoot more light into your photo
>>4479646 (OP)
They're an artistic tool. The "photo" in photography means light.

They add light. Without light you cannot take a photo. They also let you control how much light is in your photo, what kind and colour the light is, how many sources of light, as well as where the light comes from.

The industry needs to copy Leica & OM System
Brace for my third world tough environment cope thread
>there's IP-rated gaming mice
>there's $200 chineseium smartphones with IP69K ratings

It seems like it's a fully reasonable thing to want to know just how well the stuff you want to buy holds up against the elements.. especially professional cameras

>Go to purchase $6000 "pro body camera"
>Canon
"Dude, please trust us! The Canon EOS R1 is weather sealed! Because our marketing division said so! We don't have any proof of this, or any testing, but please trust us bro look at our brochure look at our website bro it's weather sealed bro please bro"
>Nikon
"broooo it's the Nikon Z9 bro we sealed it just like our D6 bro remember DSLRs??? Remember how tough those were???? Yeah buddy you know you can trust us come one just spend $7000 on this camera we are the wildlife brand!"
>Sony
They don't even try. DPReview turned a hose on the alpha 7 III and it died because there were literally no rubber seals in the battery compartment.

Why do people do this? Do people actually spend tens of thousands of dollars on cameras/lenses that can't prove resistance beyond marketing teams telling you so? Why isn't the industry being forced to back up their claims?
>Le rainbag meme
Useless against dust & sand, and do you genuinely expect me to carry around several rainbags for different lenses, or make my own from a grocery bag and take it around with me? Its cumbersome, and its hassle.
>Le "just don't take a picture! I wouldn't push my camera that hard!"
Sounds like cope to me, works if you consider photography or videography a hobby and not your purpose in life, I want to take my camera to warzone, etc., anything for the picture, but I sure want my camera to survive if I do.

Leica makes IP54 rated cameras.
OM System makes IP53 rated cameras & lenses.
Why don't more companies do so? It's not expensive to get certification, I just want camera manufacturers to be honest & upfront about how far we can push our cameras.

You only say that because I do, and you don't

Zach, we are talking about SL series Leicas, which do have (pretty good) autofocus and video, and IP54

Cute tarot card
>>4479864
That's exactly why they buy it.

It's just a manual focus lens in front of a big sensor.
i think leica is too expensive
why would you buy a leica when they dont have autofocus or video?

continuous doesn't mean that autofocus is always on, it means that it will not stop focusing once focus is achieved.

Can you believe people unironically use AF for non-ENG video nowadays? Then they wonder why their output has no artistic value. If you want to make art you need to control the scene and that includes the focal plane. Naturally to get no artistic output you need to dispense with more th...
