The Mike room isn't a joke, it's actually telling you how FRIEND works.

Mike is a puppetteer, with the element Puppet/Cat. Anything the fake Mikes said in costume was actually being said by FRIEND through them - similar to how we control Frisk and Kris. If you read the dialogue with that in mind, it actually all fits.

If you do what Mike/FRIEND wants enough, you'll have your body hijacked. Mike can make more Mikes. FRIEND also does not remember its real name, consistent with the mysterious valentines letter that it probably wrote.

There's a good chance this thing is more like a virus than a friend. Something that wrote itself into the game and gave itself the name FRIEND to decieve you, because it knew you'd be looking for it in the game files. They may have only five seconds of actual screentime but they make up for it with a fuckton of foreshadowing. Every single mention of Cat Petterz is actually a FRIEND reference, for example, since that's the game Noelle hatched their egg in. They're also deeply connected to the Tree Man.
