Interesting, thanks anon. Seems to make sense that the more enjoyable it is to just be in the world (high production value) the more forgiving you are. I think this holds across other examples too. It's important to charm the player -- good mystery, or humor, or art, or characters, etc. -- right at the start of the game. It buys lots of good will with players. It's why good games can get away with being just a few hours as well sometimes.

addendum: if the puzzle is part of a "secret" or some easter egg challenge it's ok to be hard out of the blue. What I originally said is moreso if that puzzle is apart of the main game path and a player is forced to get through it.
